Chairman’s LetterI look forward to welcoming you all to the 2018 festival.

We have updated the syllabus design this year. For the first time our cover is printed in full colour. We intend to make similar changes to the 2018 programme. We hope you like them.

This year we have included some non-competitive classes in the piano section and the woodwind section has been reorganised. We have also introduced a new class (class 160) entitled “Show us your unusual instruments”. This should be fun and very interesting, so do bring along any of these that you have!

My late husband’s son and I are pleased to announce a new cup in memory of my husband Neil. “The Creaser-Kitching Cup” will be awarded in the Open Chopin Piano Solo class (class 26).

We hope as many people as possible will come to take part and to listen. The adjudicators always give stimulating and encouraging feedback to each performer.

We are anticipating a happy and entertaining event.

Her career has always pursued a very wide path - solo and lecture recitals, concertos, chamber music, Lieder recitals, accompanying, adjudicating, examining and teaching. She was Head of Keyboard Studies at the Birmingham School of Music (now the Birmingham Conservatoire) for a period of five years, but relinquished this post in order to devote more time to performing and teaching at the Royal College where she was a Professor of Piano and Piano Accompaniment for over 30 years She was elected a Fellow of the Royal College in 1985.

Born and educated in Australia, Ruth began her musical career there, broadcasting regularly at a very early age. After winning the Elder Overseas Scholarship and gaining a Bachelor of Music degree at Adelaide University she continued with postgraduate studies at the Royal College where she was awarded many prizes, including the Hopkinson Gold Medal.

Recently she has given master classes in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Malta and Greece and conducted many seminars for piano teachers in the UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. She is frequently invited to adjudicate at Festivals world-wide and is actively involved in many aspects of the work of the ABRSM.

Peter WellsPeter Wells is a music graduate of the University of Auckland in his native New Zealand. He undertook postgraduate study in the Netherlands, on a Dutch Government scholarship, and musicological research at the Royal College of Music. He has worked as both an instrumentalist and a singer, performing, touring and recording widely. As an instrumentalist Peter has always focussed on baroque chamber music but also has a special interest in contemporary music, as a result of which he has commissioned and premiered many new compositions, both in the UK and abroad.

Peter has adjudicated music festivals in New Zealand and across the British Isles for more than 25 years, and has developed specialisms in woodwind, chamber music and choral music classes. This is his third visit to adjudicate at the Oxford Festival. He has published many articles and editions of renaissance and baroque music as well as two books on architecture and hundreds of reviews of all kinds of music. Under the pseudonym Pietro Fontani he composes “baroque” concertos and chamber music works.

As an educator Peter has worked with all age groups

and across multiple disciplines, including choral and orchestral work with children and adults, and as a chamber music coach working with young student ensembles up to university postgraduates in repertoire extending from the renaissance to the contemporary, and everything in between. He now spends much of the year travelling internationally as a grade and diploma examiner for Trinity College London.

Melanie RaggeOboist Melanie Ragge has performed nationally and internationally as a recitalist, chamber musician and orchestral player in venues as far flung as Vancouver Island, Malta, & northern Sweden as well as UK venues such as St John’s Smith Square, the Royal Opera House and Wigmore Hall. A founder member of one of the UK’s leading wind ensembles, the New London Chamber Ensemble, she has released several CD’s, including Nielsen’s Wind & Piano Chamber Music “…performances and sound quality are outstanding in every regard.” International Record Review.

Originally a medical student at King’s College Cambridge, Melanie ultimately graduated with a Master of Philosophy degree in Musicology before going on to study as a Leverhulme Fellow at the Royal College of Music. She has since collaborated with numerous artists including the Dante, Schidlof and Emperor string quartets, pianists Ann Martin-Davis, Michael Dussek and Angela Hewitt, and baritone Gerald Finlay. Over the last few years, her performances have included recitals with Angela Hewitt and the New London Chamber Ensemble at Wigmore Hall, with the NLCE and Dante Quartet at the Cheltenham Festival, touring and recording Mahler’s 10th Symphony at Philharmonie Hall in Berlin with the International Mahler Orchestra, and recitals at the Royal Opera House with the Ellipsis Ensemble. Coinciding with the Roald Dahl centenary in 2016, her latest disc with the New London Chamber Ensemble, is Martin Butler’s chamber music, including settings of Dahl’s ‘Dirty Beasts’ narrated by Simon Callow, for NMC. 2017 brings visits to Hull with both the New London Chamber Ensemble and Ellipsis Ensemble as part of Hull’s City of Culture concert season.

A committed educator, Melanie regularly adjudicates, coaches and gives masterclasses; she has been a guest tutor for numerous projects, including Chamber Music International, the Hamburg Hochschule für Musik und Theater and the Penderecki Musik Akademie. She is an oboe professor at the Royal Academy, teaches at the Purcell School of Music, and is the Associate Director and woodwind tutor for the National Youth Chamber Orchestra. Her scientific interest continues in the form of ongoing research into the use of Electromyography to help to reduce strain injuries in musical training.

Beryl FosterBeryl Foster is a graduate of London University and studied singing principally with Ranken Bushby, first in Colchester and then at the Royal College of Music. She has sung in recital, concert and oratorio in London, the provinces and abroad. She teaches privately, is an experienced vocal and choral adjudicator and a founder-member of the International Guild of Adjudicators, Festivals and Workshop Presenters.

While singing and teaching all the standard repertoire, Beryl specialises in the performance of Norwegian art-song and has given recitals, lectures and workshops on Norwegian song around Britain, in Norway, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, the United States and China. Her definitive book, The Songs of Edvard Grieg is still the only complete study of this crucial part of a great composer’s output. In June 1993 she gave the key lecture on the songs at the International Grieg Symposium in Bergen and also translated the brochure for the major exhibition, Your Grieg. In 1998 a research fellowship at the Centre for Advanced Studies in Oslo resulted in another definitive book, Edvard Grieg: the Choral Music.

Three volumes of Grieg’s songs with her translations have been published; a newly edited and annotated edition of the op.30 Album was made for Felling Male Voice Choir in 1993; Three Norwegian Carols, translated and arranged for ladies’ voices, are published by Lindsay Music; and a translation of Grieg’s melodrama Bergliot was made for performance in 2000. She has translated Grieg songs for Associated Board albums and provided the introductions to the songs in the Grieg Centenary

Song album. A translation of all the vocal music from Peer Gynt was commissioned by Southampton Philharmonic and performed there in 2010 and in Basingstoke in 2013. Other translations include a substantial book on the Norwegian composer Ludvig Irgens Jensen, two on the “Norwegian Paganini” Ole Bull and articles for CD booklets. Literally Grieg, a collection of the original texts to all Grieg’s songs and choral music with literal English translations was published in 2011.

Beryl is currently Chairman of the Grieg Society of Great Britain and President of the International Grieg Society.

Piano Recital Class

This event will be held in the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building in St Hilda’s College, Oxford on Sunday 28th January 2018.

There is a preliminary round during the day when each entrant performs a 25-30 minute recital. At 6pm there will be an adjudication and the best three performers will be invited to repeat their performances in what is always an exciting final before they receive their adjudication and prizes are awarded.

We strongly encourage any festival participants or spectators who enjoy piano music to attend some if not all of this event. It’s an opportunity to experience conservatoire level piano playing for the cost of a standard festival ticket.

Oxford Music FestivalChurchill Hospital Cancer Centre Lunchtime

ConcertsFor the last few years the Festival has been running a number of lunchtime concerts at the Churchill Hospital Cancer Centre Cafe for patients and staff . These take place at various dates throughout the year and involve a number of the most promising players who are invited to perform programmes of between 10 and 20 mins each, which are then combined into concerts of 40 to 50 mins. This year the youngest player is 9 and the oldest ones are in year 13. Most of the concerts are also recorded by Radio Cherwell [the hospital radio] and are then broadcast throughout the Oxford hospitals. This is a very good experience for the players as there is a huge diff erence between playing one piece at the festival and planning and performing a whole programme. The patients and staff also enjoy the occasions – we have had much positive feedback from both.

Delivered in partnership with

Oxford Music Festival - Child Protection PolicyThe British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech and the Oxford Music Festival are committed to ensuring safe environments for children and young people and believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to recommend best practice which protects them. This policy applies to our Board of Trustees, paid staff, Adjudicator members, volunteers, students or anyone working on behalf of the Federation and its member Festivals.

We recognise that:• the welfare of the child/young person is paramount• all children, regardless of age, disability, gender,

racial heritage, religious belief, sexual orientation or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse

• working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other agencies is essential in promoting young people’s welfare.

The purpose of the policy:• to provide protection for the children and young

people who participate in our festivals, including the children of festival members

• to provide staff and volunteers with guidance on procedures they should adopt in the event that they suspect a child or young person may be experiencing, or be at risk of, harm

We will seek to safeguard children and young people by:

• valuing them, listening to and respecting them• adopting child protection guidelines through

procedures and safe working practice for staff and volunteers

• recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made

• sharing information about child protection and safe working practice with children, parents, staff and volunteers

• sharing information about concerns with agencies who need to know, and involving parents and children appropriately

• providing effective management for staff and volunteers through supervision, support and training.

The Federation will review this policy each year in November in line with Safe Network guidance or sooner in light of any changes in legislation or guidance. All changes will be communicated to our member Festivals in time for the start of the new Festival year.

Creating Safer Festivals for EveryoneThe Federation and its member Festivals use the following policies and procedures to create Safer Festivals for everyone: 1. A single, definitive Child Protection Policy adopted by all

Federation Festivals. 2. One or more designated Festival Safeguarding Officers

(FSO) appointed for each Federation Festival. The Oxford Music Festival FSO is Linda Bobby Phone: 01865874372.

3. Best practice advice in the form of Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection leaflets, with support and training for all Festival staff and volunteers. Including clear reporting procedures for anyone with a concern about a child.

4. Appropriate recruitment and induction procedures for all new Festival staff and volunteers responsible for providing safe environments for everyone attending / performing at a Federation Festival.

5. All Festival personnel wear an official identity badge. All teachers/parents/guardians /carers are asked to report all incidents of any nature to anyone wearing a badge. All reported incidents will be handled in accordance with the Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection best practice advice. In addition we will ensure the availability of a quiet area / room where concerns can be expressed in private.

6. For the duration of a Festival all teachers/parents/guardians/carers are responsible for the continuous care and supervision of their own children/pupils. If they are unable to attend personally, they must delegate their responsibilities to an identified adult and ensure that their children/pupils are aware of the identity and name of the person responsible for their care. This includes supervision throughout all Festival venues, practice and changing areas that may be provided. The Festival cannot take responsibility for any property left unattended.

7. No unauthorised photography, audio or video recording of children and young people is allowed at our Festivals. Where parents/guardians/carers do not wish photos to be taken at all, then the responsible adult attending should ensure that their child is not included in official photos.

8. Some children and vulnerable adults may have specific needs in order to take part. If this is the case we ask the responsible teachers/parents/guardians/carers to contact the Festival Organisers at the time of entry. The Festival actively seeks wherever possible to meet these needs, but must know beforehand in order to prepare support – or to advise that help cannot be provided on this occasion.

9. The Festival’s Child Protection Policy and approach to Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone is published explicitly in our Syllabus, Programme and Website. By completing and signing the entry form all parents / guardians / carers and teachers of entrants under 18 (or vulnerable adults of any age) confirm that they give (or have obtained) the necessary consents for the entrants to take part in the Festival. Without consent the entry to the Festival cannot be accepted.

BEECHER ACOUSTICS AT

THE CENTRE OF

THE SOUND

I bought my cello from Beecher Acoustics. It was very exciting - Beecher Acoustics have done a beautiful job of restoring it and Jonathan worked with me on the set up until it was tailored perfectly for me. Any string player who wants to achieve more from their instrument should go and see Jonathan as soon as possible.

Melinda Gourlay M(Mus)

This lovely nineteenth century Austrian viola has all the characteristics I have been looking for during my career with Welsh National Opera. It has a wonderfully sweet tone with very even sonority. It speaks easily and is perfect for Chamber Music. I love it! I just can't put it down! We had a quartet rehearsal on Tuesday and it was a joy thank you so much. Domini Lipman, for many years viola player with Orchestra of Welsh National Opera

I want to thank you for the magnificent work on my violin. The instrument became more responsive than ever before, and undreamt-of tonal colours emerged. This was a process of enormous value to me, because the instrument was thus tailored to my individual requirements. It is unique in my experience... I can recommend your work wholeheartedly and without reservation.

Ronald Colyer - Violinist, ex-Philharmonia Orchestra of London and BBC Symphony Orchestra

I have had the opportunity to play several modestly priced violins restored by Beecher Acoustics, and have used one of these instruments professionally for several months, and found it extremely responsive, and ideal for my work with WNO and leading a quartet. Anyone who has the opportunity to work with Jonathan Beecher at this level is extremely fortunate.

Antony Tarlton, for many years Principal Violinist, Orchestra of Welsh National Opera.
