match officials Messrs Maynard, Dolphin & Mufiri. We hope you all enjoy your short stay with us and have a safe journey back home later on.

With this being our last home match of 2014, it is the perfect time to wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a happy new year.

It has certainly been an eventful year, but a positive one, particularly on the pitch with some very positive results for the first team. I know Keith and his team thoroughly appreciate your support.

Matches between ourselves and Oxford City Nomads always produce goals - there is proof of that on page 7 - and lets hope todays match is no different with Bracknell edging a thriller.

I hope you are all wearing your best festive clobber today, with it being designated the clubs first Christmas jumper day - I will be keeping an eye out.

A quick mention of festive fixtures, we are at our old friends Binfield on Monday 29th December for a 7.45pm kick-off, and we host Ascot United on Saturday 3rd January at Larges Lane.

Don’t forget you can keep up with everything at the club over Christmas on our website bracknelltownfc.com, twitter @bracknelltownfc and facebook.com/bracknelltownfc

Nomads FC in 2005 which competed for two seasons as Oxford Quarry Nomads in the Hellenic League Division One East playing at Court Place Farm Stadium. Upon the retirement of key officials Keith and Linda Dolton in 2007 it as decided to bring the team fully into the Oxford City structure yet ensure that the famous Nomads name lives on.

Oxford City Nomads won promotion to the Hellenic Premier Division in 2008/9 and in the first season finished in a creditable mid table position with a young team and scoring 100 goals. Season 2010/11 saw the first Oxford City Nomads team play in the FA Vase – 15 years after Oxford City were beaten finalists at Wembley. In season 2011/12 Nomads were Hellenic Champions and in 2012/13 won the Hellenic League Cup and finished a creditable fourth in the table in their first season with ex City star Chris Fontaine as manager. Several Nomads players have progressed to play for City in the Southern League and Conference and that trend is destined to continue with a succession of youngsters currently coming through the successful development process which this season has been strengthened by the forming of a Nomads Development team managed by Oxford City Sports College tutor Craig Adey.

Quarry Nomads were founded in 1936, but football in Headington Quarry dates back to the latter part of the 19th century. The “Oxford Times” of 1893 reports that a football team has been formed in Quarry in direct opposition to the newly formed Headington United side, the paper also refers to them at the “semi-savages” from the Quarry. A suitable name was being considered for the team and someone suggested “The Nomads”, everyone agreed. In their first season the club lifted the Oxfordshire Youth Cup. Prior to the Second World War the team played in the Oxfordshire Youth League and when the war was over the club moved onto the Oxford City Football Association where the League Challenge Cup was won in 1950. Throughout the 1950’s the club played in the Oxfordshire Junior League and then the Oxford Intermediate League before joining the Oxfordshire Senior League around 1960. Quarry Nomads continued playing in the Oxfordshire Senior League until the club hit rock bottom in 1981. The last season in the Senior League was1984-85 when the club left the league and did not compete in competitive football for two years.

Quarry Nomads reformed at the start of the 1987-88 season under the guidance of Keith Dolton a former player who has been a member of the 1966 Oxfordshire Senor Cup winning side. The club entered the Oxford City FA Junior League. In season1988-89 the club rejoined the Oxfordshire Senior League and ultimately returned to the Senior League Premier Division.

In 1994-95 the club was accepted into the Charrington Chiltonian League and finished runners-up to champions Denham United. The 1996-97 season saw them finish in 12th spot followed by 10th position for the next two seasons. It was back to 12th spot again in the last Chiltonian Premier Division when the club, along with the rest of the Chiltonian League joined Division One (East) of the enlarged Cherry Red Records Hellenic League for the season 2000-01. Season 2002-3 saw the team carry on from where they left off the previous term. All season the side were well up with the league leaders and a final good run of results saw the club take the league title by a clear seven points. The team enjoyed a good run in the Oxfordshire Charity Cup and got as far as the semi-finals before losing 1-0 to Oxfordshire Senior League side Eynsham Association.

At the Hellenic Leagues A.G.M. the club was awarded the Hungerford Trophy – a fitting honour for Quarry Nomads. In season 2005-06 the history of Quarry Nomads moved forward one more stage with the formal association with another famous local club, Oxford City. This forward thinking partnership betweentwo of Oxford’s oldest clubs was a positive innovation for the development of players in the Oxford region and the renamed Oxford Quarry Nomads played all home 1st team matches at City’s Court Place Farm Stadium and progressively adopted the Oxford City training and player development procedures.

Oxford City Nomads is the club’s Hellenic League team formed to provide a strong standard of football to local youngsters and bridge the gap between the successful Oxford City youth structure and the club’s Step 2 Conference North team. Bracknell Town boss Keith Penicott-Bowen handed a debut to Youth Team striker Connor Thorndike on Saturday afternoon as the first team were beaten 5-2 in extra-time by Uhlsport Hellenic Premier League leaders Highmoor-IBIS.

The youngster scored a hat-trick in November for the Development Team as Bracknell beat Kidlington 4-1.

Fellow youth and development team players Matt Bradshaw and William Kyeremeh also made appearances having debuted previously under ‘Bowes’ in the 4-2 defeat by Oxford City Nomads on 24th September.

Speaking to bracknelltownfc.com, Bowes said: “The first team squad were stretched for players due to a virus taking out 4 players before Saturday’s Cup match vs Highmoor-IBIS. [Youth team manager] Paul Howe reacted kindly to a late call from the club to assist in providing three players in Matt Bradshaw, Connor Thorndike and William Kyeremeh. All three aquitted themselves comfortably into the first team environment.”

On their performances, the Bracknell boss spoke highly. “Matt came on at right back – very combative and tigerish in the tackle. William on the wide right of midfield was able to show glimpses of his Ed Moses like stride length and speed. Connor on as striker reminding me of Justin Day (pictured below) with his movement away from the defender whilst also willing to chase and close down defenders.”

“As First Team Manager I have no hesitation in calling up either Development or Allied Counties players. The club is structured from U6’s to U21’s to coach and develop local talent to play senior football for Bracknell Town Football Club or higher if and when possible.” he added.

A WORD WITHKeith Penicott-Bowen

Our series of chats continues with a second catch-up with Robins boss Keith Penicott-Bowen following the debut of youth team star Connor Thorndike last weekend.

High praise indeed for the young trio who join Sean Hanley and Ebby Opoku-Ware as youth team players to feature in the first team this season.

A favourable comparison for Connor Thorndike with ‘legend’ Justin Day u

and a half goals per match, it was no surprise to see another high scoring affair with hosts Oxford City Nomads prevailing 4-2 over Bracknell Town.

The Robins were severely depleted with manager Ed Carpenter away with work whilst captain Sam Whiting, Tom Barratt, Jamie Lawlor, Dan Money, Harry Brown, Tom Williams, Andre Kelly, Grant Goodband and Martin Bradshaw all missed for a variety of reasons.

Tom Nugent and Dan Sleet were thrust into the heart of defence with James Ward taking Nugent’s place in midfield and there were debuts for youngsters Matt Bradshaw and William Kyeremeh from the bench.

Shane Cooper-Clark did admirably well playing 84 minutes and scoring both goals despite suffering from flu to take his tally to twelve goals for the season and with no other Bracknell player scoring more than one goal this season, Cooper-Clark’s continued contribution cannot be underestimated.

The first half was played at a frenetic pace and goalkeeper James Hawtree was in fine form as he dived left to push away a Louis Joyce free-kick. Mark Janes also squandered a good chance as the home side were immediately on the offensive.

Cooper-Clark opened the scoring however in the eleventh minute. Ward won the ball but it wriggled free from him and Ryan Coupland’s tackle turned into a defence splitting pass with Cooper-Clark cutting inside and coolly firing beyond Alex Williams.

Again Nomads looked dangerous and after Janes beat Michael Watson, Hawtree was forced to beat the ball away but it only fell to John Rixon on the edge of the box and Hawtree reacted to tip the ball round his left post.

Jake White fired over from a good position with Ward also snatching at a shot and Cooper-Clark firing at Williams as the visitors looked to increase the lead but never looked like extending it.

Louis Joyce should have equalised on 34 minutes but another brilliant Hawtree save kept his side ahead but Joyce did score in the 37th minute as he turned Sleet before rifling the ball into the roof of the net.

On 42 minutes Nomads moved ahead as Lewis Gabbidon set up Janes who made no mistake with a great strike.

OUR PREVIOUSReport from our last meeting

Bracknell had a penalty appeal waved away after what appeared a push by Danny Warne and Janes should had got his second but somehow missed when it looked easier to score although the flag was up for offside anyhow.

There were three goals in as many minutes with goals in the 56th, 57th and 58th minutes.

Joyce got in all too easily and his low cross was to Gabbidon who struck the ball with his standing leg but it bounced kindly to Janes who was not going to miss from seven yards out.

Nomads got their fourth soon after as Jose Unzueta-Acha’s right sided cross was headed in by Gabbidon.

Nugent then picked out Cooper-Clark who slotted under Williams to give his side hope of a comeback but there were no further goals despite more chances for either side.

Kyeremeh shot at Williams with James King sending a lobbed effort narrowly over and there was another penalty appeal waved away as Janes came through the back of Ward to clear the ball.

Jamie Mundy had the ball in the back of the new for the home side but it was rightly ruled out for offside with the substitute striker looking extremely lively but constantly getting into offside positions.

A really enjoyable game of football despite the result but player availability once again causing us all sorts of problems as the match was there for the taking with a stronger side.

It is a break from league action this weekend as Headington Amateurs come to Larges Lane in the Bluefin Sports Hellenic Challenge Cup.

Keith Penicott-Bowen - Manager. Took over as manager in October 2014 having been assistant for two years. ‘Bowes’ is a club legend having played for over a decade during the 90s and was part of the side that reached the FA Cup First Round Proper in 2000. Keith has also been a coach at Binfield.

SponsorNeeded

Garry Aulsberry - Experienced goalkeeper who joined the club from Binfield in October after injury to James Hawtree and has been in impressive form. Previously played for Wokingham & Emmbrook.

SponsorNeeded

Michael Watson - A quick and attacking right back who came through our youth system. ‘Mikey’ was arguably our most consistent player last season turning in steady performances on a weekly basis.

SponsorNeeded

Harry Brown - Young defender who joined us from Farnborough. Can play at full back but has mostly been used at centre half. ‘H’ has proved to be a classy and quick addition.

SponsorNeeded

Jordan Rowland - Used to play as a winger but now plying his trade as a left back. An attack minded player who strikes the ball so well he will undoubtedly cause problems with his set piece delivery and excellent crossing.

SponsorNeeded

Grant Goodband - Grant joined us during last season having re-cently moved to the area. A solid defender who loves to tackle and has a committed approach. Can play right-back or centre back.

SponsorNeeded

Tom Williams - A strong central defender who can also play in midfield. Was previously with Binfield where he played a large part in their reserve team title win. Doesn’t lose many aerial battles.

SponsorNeeded

Andre Kelly - Andre joined us from Finchampstead wanting to try his hand at Hellenic Premier Division football. A very composed and cultured central defender who also chips in with a few goals.

Sponsored by TC

Taylor Elliott-Money - In his second spell at the club having featured regularly under Steve Nebbett and Danny Oliphant. Comfortable at full-back and in midfield.

SponsorNeeded

Sam Tighe - Tall and quiet defender who sets about the game with minimal fuss. Can play central or right and is another who counts Binfield as his previous club.

SponsorNeeded

Tom Nugent - ‘Nuge’ is as strong as an ox and can play in midfield or defence. Scores a lot of headed goals and is a player we miss through being away at university for large parts of the season. An-other who progressed through our youth system.

Tom Barratt - Tom is a talented youngster who progressed through our youth team. Best in midfield and with a powerful shot, he has a great attitude and can also play at the back although he prefers midfield.

SponsorNeeded

Sam Whiting - New club captain for the coming season and is a very cultured midfielder. Primarily playing a central role, he will be the heartbeat of our team and will look to dictate our tempo.

SponsorNeeded

Kennie Chamberlain - Kennie is yet another who came from Binfield and he too was a regular in our reserve side last campaign. Likes to play an attacking central role, ideally behind the striker or strikers whom he can support.

SponsorNeeded

James King - ‘Simba’ also came through our youth system and joined us midway through last season from Wokingham & Em-mbrook. A good dribbler of the ball who likes to operate in the space between midfield and attack.

SponsorNeeded

Martin Bradshaw - Our most versatile player having played almost every position bar goalkeeper last season. Quiet and unassuming, ‘Bradders’ does a job wherever he is asked to play and without any fuss. Prefers to play as a wide attacker.

SponsorNeeded

Dan Broadbear - Very quick and skilful winger who won manager’s player and players player last season for our reserve team. Should be first team regular this season having impressed in pre-season for us.

SponsorNeeded

Khalid Senussi - Another player who joined from Wokingham & Em-mbrook. Khalid is a skilful player more adept at playing in a wide position who tries to find pockets of space to operate in.

SponsorNeeded

Jake White - Came through the clubs youth system where he excelled as a striker before converting into a right-back. Now back playing as a striker where his blistering pace causes problems for opposition defences.

SponsorNeeded

Shane Cooper-Clark - A good target man who can link play very well and looks set to be a key component of our striking options this season. Previously clubs include Ascot United and Wokingham & Emmbrook.

Sponsored by SteveGabb

Lewis Burns - One of a trio of players who joined us from Wokingham & Emmbrook. Lewis also came through our youth system and had a good goals to games ration last season.

SponsorNeeded

Ebby Opoku-Ware - A regular for our youth team and reserve team last campaign and also played a couple of first team matches. Arguably our most skilful player with plenty of tricks up his sleeve, he should not be underestimated despite his tender years.

The first team’s game at Woodley on Sunday was postponed due to a frozen pitch and the team now go on a winter break for Christmas.

The reserve team were involved in a tie lasting over three hours, two red cards and six goals on Sunday afternoon. Robins eventually prevailed with a 3-1 penalty shoot-out win at Syngenta Recreation Ground on Jealotts Hill.

Annie Moffatt (pictured) scored once in normal time, and again in extra-time, either side of a goal from Sam Tan to send the tie to penalties.

Both teams are looking for new players. Details can be found at www.bracknelltownfc.com/ladies-team

LADIES SCENEKeeping up with our ladies teams

Bracknell Town Ladies first team play in the Southern Region Women’s Premier, and the reserves play in the Thames Valley Women’s League Division 1 South.

24

Page 25: Oxford City Nomads programme 20/12/2014

Sam Tan #coyRobinsSam is playing her first season as an out and out striker and has already scored six goals in 12 games for both the ladies first and reserve teams.

Place of Birth: London Position: Forward Club supported: Liverpool FC

Best game played in and why? Very hard to choose just one game, as I like to think I always give it my best. But if I had to choose one, it would probably be the game against Aylesbury at home. I was put in an unfamiliar center-mid position, where I helped assist a goal and scored a great goal from 35 yards out that lobbed the keeper to bring us level at 2-2. Then for the second half being 3-2 down and without our regular keeper, I volunteered to go in goal, another unfamiliar role and was really put to the test by Aylesbury but kept us in the game with some difficult saves and we came away with a 3-3 draw.

Funniest moment in football? It has to be our latest cup game Vs Holyport Ladies. It had everything in that game possible from panic attacks, injuries, red cards to extra time and penalties. We as a team really enjoyed the game, gave it our all and just about came out on top winning the penalties. We were so tired and elated that we just ran and jumped on top of each other that anyone would think we had won the world cup! Most enjoyable game so far. Now onto the semi’s...

Ambitions for the season:As this is my first season as a regular striker for the reserve ladies, I really want to build up my confidence up front and really believe in myself as a striker. I’d also like to retain being top scorer for this season!

Best ground played at:The ladies ground this season haven’t been that great, I’ve played on some really boggy pitches. Our ground has to be one of the best along with Maidenhead so far.

PROFILEStriker Sam Tan

As a regular feature, we’ll be catching up with members of the 2014/15 ladies team as they progress in the Southern Region Women’s League, and Thames Valley Region Women’s League.

rival that of the recently built Eiffel Tower.

An eclectic range of sixty-eight designs were submitted to Watkins from across Europe and the world. Submissions included one tower that looked like a giant screw, another that featured hanging gardens, the pyramids of Giza and a structurethat mimicked the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The following catalogue contains all of the original proposals and is a wonderful glimpse into the mind of a 19th Century architect or crazy person dependent on the design.

So what has this got to do with football, you may reasonably ask? Well, the proposed site for this tower was to be at Wembley Park in west London, then a rather sparsely populated area. Remember, it wasn’t until 1923 that Wembley Stadium was built (then known as the Empire Stadium built for the ostentatious British Empire Exhibition in 1924). The exact location of the proposed tower was on the very site that Wembley sits on today.

A winning entry was chosen. Number 37 by Stewart, MacLaren and Dunn of London. It was to be a tower 1200 feet tall and contain restaurants, shops and an astronomical observatory at the top. Foundations were laid in 1892 and work began on constructing the tower a year later.

By the start of the new century, as Tottenham Hotspur were playing Sheffield United at Crystal Palace in front of a baying crowd of 110,000 spectators, the site that would become synonymous with Cup Finals had the first stage of a tower built upon it. If the original planning and designs had been followed through to fruition the huge tower would be 150 feet taller than Paris’ Eiffel Tower.

Unfortunately in 1901 Edward Watkin died, and with him the dreams of building a tower in London. The site was deemed unsafe a few years later and in 1907 it was dismantled, demolished and blown to smithereens by dynamite. This wasn’t entirely an end to this story though, as in the early part of the 21st Century when the current Wembley was being built, the old foundations of this doomed project were re-discovered.

It’s interesting to ponder what would have happened had Watkin’s pulled off this grand scheme. The national stadium would be dwarfed by such a huge structure, or perhaps the national stadium would have been built elsewhere, or not at all. Changing the iconography (if not the history) of English football in a heartbeat. It’s also fascinating to mull over another one of Watkins’ ideas, that of a Channel Tunnel 100 years before Euro Tunnel became a reality. If such a tunnel existed in the early part of the 20th Century perhaps teams from the continent may have been invited to take part in the FA Cup. Teams from Northern Ireland, Scotland, and of course Wales had been invited into the competition on many occasions. There’s no reason why French or Belgian clubs couldn’t also take part. This weekend sees the final round of games before German football goes on its usual five week hiatus. It has been an exceptional first half, with overachievers and underachievers, and a side so dominant they look unstoppable.

Of course, that dominant side is FC Bayern Munich. Under Pep Guardiola’s stewardship, they have become even more ruthless than they were under Jupp Heynckes. Thirteen wins and three draws from their opening sixteen matches suggest another title wrapped up early for the Champions as they already find themselves eleven points clear of second placed Wolfsburg. Arjen Robben has been sensational, scoring eight goals in twelve Bundesliga appearances, and with Robert Lewandowski seemingly still finding his feet in Bavaria, they can only improve. A daunting thought for the other seventeen teams!

Speaking of Wolfsburg, they have produced some superb performances. Ricardo Rodriguez has been sensational from left back, chipping in with vital goals and assists, while Kevin de Bruyne has put in a strong claim to be player of the season so far.

The top two apart, the team of the first half of the season has to be Paderborn. Many people - myself included - expected this little club from the North East to be relegation certs in their first ever season in the top flight. Yet they have approached this season brilliantly, going into games trying to win points rather than avoid defeat. This positivity has seen them garner eighteen points from their first sixteen games, and they are four points above bottom club Werder Bremen. Long may it continue!

If Paderborn are the overachievers, then the obvious underachievers are Borussia Dortmund. Jürgen Klopp’s team inexplicably find themselves in sixteenth position, and they have even been rock bottom in recent weeks. Nine defeats already this term has left them with a mountain to climb if they are to make next season’s Champions League. They currently trail Bayer Leverkusen in fourth by twelve points. Their first game back at the end of January is at the BayArena, a match which could either reignite or extinguish their European hopes. Unless they win this season’s Champions League of course!

HAYES & YEADING may only have three months to come up with £300,000 or face closure, but manager Phil Babb is refusing to walk away from the ailing club.

Vanarama Conference South United require the six-figure sum just to move into their part-build new Beaconsfield Road home – and another £1.2m to complete the structure of their main stand.

Hayes sold their Church Road stadium to Barratt Homes in a multi-million pound property deal in 2010 but fans are asking serious questions about where the money went and why their new home, on the site of Yeading’s former Warren ground, is still not fit for football.

The clubs merged seven years ago and after leaving their west London home they have shared at Woking and are currently playing out of Maidenhead United. Disputes with builders regarding cash flow means they continue to be in exile.

Chairman Tony O’Driscoll has warned that the club are on the verge of extinction. They must secure investment by February at the latest or they will be forced shut, possibly throwing the league into chaos.

He told The NLP: “It’s not fair to be scaring supporters but the reality is that we face a race against time to keep the club alive.

“We need £300,000 just to move into the ground. It won’t finish anything, but we can work with the bare bones. From there at least we can start creating some revenue of our own and re-invest, but a lot more money is needed to finish the job. I think £300,000 can get us back on our feet.

“We’re talking to people about investing but we’re a long way away. We need some help if we’re going to keep going. We’ve got three months maximum, it might be less than that. I have had some people offering donations which is brilliant but it doesn’t scratch the surface. We are surviving week to week.

“Simply, we have run out of money and the plan has not worked, there is little point in saying anything else. When I took over I may have been a little naive but I was under the impression the money was there to carry on building. It’s not, it’s gone and now if we are going to survive we need people and the local community to come to the rescue and quickly.” Story from www.thenonleaguefootballpaper.com

A Bideford fan will watch his 100th Robins game on Saturday – despite living more than 200 miles away.

Keith Palmer’s home town is Harrow, in Middlesex, but the 49-year-old former postman has been making trips all over England to see his team in action since October 2000.

His love for the club stemmed from a Western League match against Minehead at the Sports Ground and, since that day, Keith has never looked back.

“I have really enjoyed the rollercoaster ride that has been being a Bideford fan,” he said. It has been great to see Biddy through all the promotions over 14 years but I think we are punching well above our weight in the Southern League.

“Playing at such a high standard is credit to (manager) Sean Joyce, the chairman and all the staff and players that make this club so special. I have great admiration for Joyce and how he has taken the club beyond its wildest expectations and stayed with them when the going gets tough.

“Joyce’s link with Torquay will help us stay up again this year but I would like to see fewer players brought in on loan to help the continuity of the club.

“There have barely been any changes over my 100 games and I think this is a big problem because none of the facilities have been developed and the club is very much out on a limb with all the costs.”

Keith is sponsoring the ball for Saturday’s Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division fixture against Cambridge City and providing a buffet after the game for players and club officials.

FACTFILE 100 games: October 28, 2000 to December 13, 2014.

I recently had the pleasure of re-visiting Bracknell Town FC 41 years after I left the area to move to the South coast. I had at that time in the 60’s joined the committee and eventually had the honour to become Club Chairman.

Life was no different in those days and like most senior football clubs it was a struggle to survive let alone progress. It remains a happy memory that in 1969-1970 the club achieved its most successful season to date. The team secured the Surrey Senior League championship, winning all but one of league games played. The club also won the Surrey Senior League Cup and the Commerce Cup.

Every organization needs a slice of luck and it only takes a spark to get things moving. Our spark was the signing of three players, Eddie Browning and Geoff and Dave Hammond from the Slough area. Within a short time their arrival somehow attracted other senior players from around the area.

There can be no doubt that an important reason for the successful season can be attributed to the small squad that was used. The popular manager was Wally Beevers and throughout this period there was great camaraderie within the club being ably served by Secretary Alan Norvill, Treasurer Peter Ridgers and a hard working committee

John McGregor without fail manned the entrance gate and Jack Harvey with his labrador “ Sambo” was the unpaid security guard living as he did in the far corner of the ground.

I have happy memories of my time at Bracknell and my son Peter and I continue to take a keen interest in the club.

We sincerely hope that the fortunes of the “Robins” will improve and that local business and the public can get behind the club and provide the support every town football club needs in order to progress
