A part of our international English courses the English Language for Academic Study courses are designed to provide international students with the language and skills needed in order to be successful in a number of Oxford Business College courses as well as for further and higher education courses.

Our Business English courses here at Oxford aim to develop students’ level of general English language, while also providing skills such as the planning and writing of academic texts, understanding lectures and note taking and the preparation and presentation of seminars.

The length of time a student should allow for English language preparation depends on their ability and learning capacity.

Pathways

Conversational Fluency

Developing confidence to interact with tutors and peers, and to participate fully in seminars and lectures, is the focus of this part of the course. Fluency is developed through 1-1 and group exercises with a strong emphasis on pronunciation. Audio-visual material and lectures from visiting speakers offer exposure to a variety of spoken English. Students are also offered tuition on improving their presentation skills, essential in academic and professional life.

Reading and Writing for Business Studies

This part of the Business English course is designed specifically to help students with their business studies assignments, utilising a variety of reading texts taken from authentic academic and business sources and offering students the business vocabulary necessary to produce successful assignments. Tuition is given on how to structure and produce business essays and reports for a variety of business studies topics.

Our English course is divided into four parts:

Business English:

Our Business English course allows students to acquire knowledge of the English language skills necessary to succeed in business through materials designed to present English language usage in a variety of contexts, including describing products and strategies, conducting meetings and negotiations and travel abroad. Classroom exercises, including examining case studies and taking part in business role-plays allow students the opportunity to develop their confidence in an international business English context

IELTS preparation

Students will receive a comprehensive introduction to the four parts of the Cambridge International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for University entrance, in which learners' key skills of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking are explored using authentic IELTS materials. On our English courses at Oxford Business College we find the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) a useful tool to help students understand the pronun-ciation of English words that they find in the dictionary. It also enables us to explain pronunciation quickly and efficiently. We create our own materials as well as using respected English language textbooks and we encourage students to use their English in different situations outside of the College.

At Oxford Business College we tailor our General English courses for optimal learning. Classes cover all areas of English language development: speaking, listening, writing and reading. Care is taken to provide a high quality grounding in grammar and use of English whilst developing vocabulary and grammar that is relevant to student needs.

During our lessons we aim to include as much variety of content as possible so that lessons are interesting, appropriate and relevant to learners. Generally the English tuition is focused on use of English for international communications and we also use materials that reflect British culture so that students can learn about everyday life in this country. We aim to ensure that students can use their English to manage everyday situations during their stay in Oxford and when visiting other English-speaking countries.

Understanding the differences between written English and spoken English is key for effective use of English language. Teachers support students to use the English language with confidence. We provide a range of lessons that consider many different issues such as entertainment, the environment, family and friends, food, health, shopping and work as well as English for using technology such as phones, social networks and other online activities. Our teachers will nurture you and can help you reach your potential for using the English language.
