During a frontal crash, your seat beltrestrains your lower body and torso, and the airbag helps protect yourhead and chest.

Only the driver’s airbag can deploy ifthere is no passenger in the frontseat, or if the advanced airbagsystem has turned the passenger’sairbag off (see page ).

This can happen if the severity of acollision is at the margin, orthreshold, that determines whetheror not the airbags will deploy. Insuch cases, the seat belt will providesufficient protection, and thesupplemental protection offered bythe airbag would be minimal.

After inflating, the front airbags willimmediately deflate, so they won’tinterfere with the driver’s visibility,or the ability to steer or operateother controls. The total time for inflation anddeflation is one-tenth of a second, sofast that most occupants are notaware that the airbags deployed untilthey see them lying in their laps.

After a crash, you may see whatlooks like smoke. This is actuallypowder from the airbag’s surface.Although the powder is not harmful, people with respiratory problemsmay experience some temporarydiscomfort. If this occurs, get out ofthe vehicle as soon as it is safe to doso.

Although both airbags normallyinflate within a split second of eachother, it is possible for only oneairbag to deploy.

Your front airbags are dual-stageairbags. This means they have twoinflation stages that can be ignitedsequentially or simultaneously, depending on crash severity. In a crash, both stageswill ignite simultaneously to providethe quickest and greatest protection. In a crash, one stage willignite first, then the second stagewill ignite a split second later. Thisprovides longer airbag inflation timewith a little less force.

Your front airbags are also dual-threshold airbags. Airbags with thisfeature have two deploymentthresholds that depend on whetheror not the occupant is wearing a seatbelt.

It the occupant’s belt is , theairbag will inflate at a slightly higherthreshold, when the airbag would beneeded to supplement the protectionprovided by the seat belt.

Your front airbags are also advancedairbags. The main purpose of thisfeature is to prevent airbag-causedinjuries to short drivers and childrenwho ride in front.

In addition, do not spill any liquids, cover the sensors, or put any cargoor metal objects under the frontseats. Ask rear seat passengers tonot put their feet under the frontseats. Any of these actions coulddamage the sensors or prevent themfrom working properly.

If the occupant’s belt is ,the airbag will deploy at the samethreshold as a conventional airbagbecause the occupant would needextra protection.

For the advanced airbags to workproperly, occupants must sit uprightand wear their seat belts properly. Ifa child seat is installed in the front, itmust be properly secured.

When the airbag is turned off, anindicator in the center of thedashboard will come on indicating‘‘Passenger Airbag Off’’ (see page

).

If there is a problem with the seatposition sensor, the SRS indicatorwill come on in the instrument panel. In this case, the driver’s airbag willinflate in the normal manner during

a crash regardless of the driver’sseating position.

The passenger’s advanced frontairbag system has weight sensorsunder the seat. If the sensors detecta total weight on the seat of about 65lbs (30 kg) or less, the system willautomatically turn the passenger’sfront airbag off.

The driver’s advanced front airbagsystem includes a seat positionsensor under the seat. If the seat ispositioned too far forward, theairbag will inflate sequentially, regardless of the severity of theimpact.

A front seat passenger should notuse a cushion or other object as abackrest. It may prevent the cutoffsystem from working properly.

If the side airbag off indicator comeson, have the passenger sit upright.Once the passenger is out of thedeployment path of the side airbag, the system will turn the airbag backon and the indicator will go out.

To get the best protection from theside airbags, front seat occupantsshould wear their seat belts and situpright and well back in their seats.

The passenger’s side airbag has acutoff system designed to turn offthe passenger’s side airbag if a child’shead is in the airbag’s deploymentpath (see page ).

Only one airbag will deploy during aside impact. If the impact is on thepassenger’s side, the passenger’s

side airbag will deploy even if thereis no passenger.

If you ever have a moderate tosevere side impact, the sensors willdetect rapid deceleration and signalthe control unit to instantly inflateeither the driver’s or the passenger’sside airbag.

To ensure that the passenger’sadvanced front airbag system willwork properly,

This includes:A rear passenger pushing orpulling on the back of thepassenger’s seat.Moving the front seat forciblyback against cargo on the seat orfloor behind it.Hanging heavy items on the frontpassenger seat, or placing heavyitems in the seat-back pocket.Make sure the rear floor mat ishooked to the floor mat anchor. Your vehicle is equipped with sidecurtain airbags. These airbags arestored in the front, center, and rearpillars on both sides. The front andrear pillars on both sides are marked‘‘SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG.’’

In a moderate to severe side impact, sensors will detect rapid decelerationand signal the control unit toinstantly inflate the side curtainairbag on the driver’s or thepassenger’s side of the vehicle. If theimpact is on the passenger’s side, thepassenger’s side curtain airbag willinflate even if there are no occupantson that side of the vehicle. To get the best protection from theside curtain airbags, occupantsshould wear their seat belts and situpright and well back in their seats.

The SRS indicator alertsyou to a potential problem

with your front airbags, the driver’sseat position sensor and the frontpassenger’s weight sensors (seepage ), or front seat belttensioners (see page ).On models with side airbags, thisindicator will also alert you to apotential problem with your sideairbags, the passenger’s side airbagautomatic cutoff system (see page

If the indicator comes on at anyother time, or does not come on at all,you should have the system checkedby your dealer. For example:

If the SRS indicator does not comeon after you turn the ignitionswitch to ON (II).If the indicator stays on after theengine starts. If the indicator comes on orflashes on and off while you drive.

If you see any of these indications, the airbags and the seat belttensioners may not work properlywhen you need them.

This indicator alerts youthat the passenger’s side

airbag has been automatically shutoff. It does mean there is aproblem with your side airbags. To reduce the risk of injury from aninflating side airbag, your vehicle hasan automatic cutoff system for thepassenger’s side airbag.Although Honda does not encouragechildren to ride in front, this systemis designed to shut off the sideairbag if a child leans sideways andthe child’s head is in the side airbagdeployment path.

Restraint Systems (SRS) — Airbags

This vehicle has airbags for both the driver and frontpassenger as a supplement to the seat belt restraintsystems. The driver’s front airbag is mounted in thecenter of the steering wheel. The passenger’s front airbagis mounted in the instrument panel, above the glovecompartment. The words SRS AIRBAG are embossed onthe airbag covers.

NOTE: The front airbags are certified to the Federalregulations that allow less forceful deployment in lowspeed collisions.

The front airbags have a multi stage inflator design. Thismay allow the airbag to have different rates of inflationthat are based on collision severity and occupant size.

Also, the front passenger airbag is certified to the Federalregulations that define Occupant Classification (Refer to“Occupant Classification System” in this section).

This vehicle may also be equipped with a driver inflat-able knee blocker located on the instrument panel belowthe steering column.

This vehicle may also be equipped with window bags toprotect the driver, front, and rear passengers sitting nextto a window. If the vehicle is equipped with windowbags, they are located above the side windows. Theircovers are also labeled SRS AIRBAG.

• If your vehicle contains a Passenger Airbag Disableindicator light, it will be equipped with the OccupantClassification System (OCS). The OCS system willclassify an occupant into a size category based onsensor readings from within the seat cushion. Occu-pants should try to remain in a normally seatedposition. If the occupant’s weight is transferred toanother object in the vehicle (i.e. feet on the dash-board), the OCS may not be able to properly approxi-mate occupant size. Furthermore, the occupant sizemay appear to increase or decrease due to objectshanging on the seat, other passengers pushing on theseat, or objects lodged underneath the seat. Ensurethat the front passenger seat back does not touchanything placed on the back seat because this can alsoaffect occupant classification. Also, if you fold downthe rear seat, check to be sure it doesn’t touch the frontpassenger seat.

If there is a rapid change in temperature or humidity, the OCS may not be able to properly approximateoccupant size. If your seat including your trim coverand cushion needs to be serviced in any way (includ-ing removal or loosening/tightening of seat attach-ment bolts), take the vehicle to your authorized dealer.Only manufacturer approved seat accessories may beused.

If there is a fault present in the system, the AIRBAGwarning light will illuminate indicating that you shouldtake the vehicle to an authorized dealer. In the presenceof an occupant in the passenger seat, if both the PADindicator light and AIRBAG warning light are illumi-nated the airbag will be disabled.

The ORC will not allow front airbag deployment in theevent of a collision for occupants classified into theempty or child size categories. The PAD indicator lightwill illuminate indicating that the Passenger Airbag is

OFF when the OCS has determined that the occupant sizecategory is a child. Also, when the seat is empty or anobject that weighs less than a predetermined threshold isplaced on the seat, the light will remain OFF. (The PADindicator light is an amber light located on the center ofthe instrument panel above the radio.)

For almost all sizes of properly seated adults, the airbagwill be enabled in the event of a collision. For smallteenagers and some small adults, depending on size, theairbag may or may not be enabled in the event of acollision. Both drivers and passengers should always usethe PAD indicator light as an indication if the front

passenger is properly positioned or not. If the PADindicator light comes on when an adult is in the passen-ger seat, have the passenger re-position themselves in theseat until the light goes out.

Remember, if the PAD indicator light is illuminated thepassenger front airbag will not inflate. For almost allproperly installed child restraints, the “PAD IndicatorLight” will be illuminated indicating that the front pas-senger airbag is turned off and will not inflate. If the“PAD Indicator Light” is not illuminated, DO NOTassume the airbag is turned off and move the childrestraint to the rear seat. A deploying passenger airbagcan cause death or serious injury to a child in a rearfacing infant seat.

NOTE: Even though this vehicle is equipped with anOccupant Classification System, children 12 years andunder should always ride buckled up in a rear seat in anappropriate child restraint.

If you have children, or ever need todrive with a child in your vehicle, besure to read this section. It beginswith important general guidelines, then presents special information forinfants, small children, and largerchildren.

Each year, many children are injuredor killed in vehicle crashes becausethey are either unrestrained or notproperly restrained. In fact, vehicleaccidents are the number one causeof the death of children ages 12 andunder.

To reduce the number of childdeaths and injuries, every state andCanadian province requires thatinfants and children be properlyrestrained when they ride in avehicle.

(see pages ).(see pages ).

Children depend on adults to protectthem. However, despite their bestintentions, many adults do not knowhow to protect childpassengers.

Protecting Children General Guidelines

All Children Must Be Restrained

Infants and small children must berestrained in an approved child seatthat is properly secured to thevehicle

Larger children must be restrainedwith a lap/shoulder belt and ride ona booster seat until the seat belt f itsthem properly

38

Children who are unrestrainedor improperly restrained can beseriously injured or killed in acrash.

Any child too small for a seatbelt should be properlyrestrained in a child seat. Alarger child should be properlyrestrained with a seat belt anduse a booster seat if necessary.

Front airbags have been designed tohelp protect adults in a moderate tosevere frontal collision. To do this, the passenger’s front airbag is quitelarge, and it can inflate with enoughforce to cause very serious injuries.

If the vehicle seat istoo far forward, or the child’s head isthrown forward during a collision, aninflating front airbag can strike thechild with enough force to kill orvery seriously injure a small child.

Whenever possible, larger children should sit in the backseat, on a booster seat if needed, andbe properly restrained with a seatbelt (see page for importantinformation about protecting largerchildren).

Children who ride in back are lesslikely to be injured by strikinginterior vehicle parts during acollision or hard braking. Also, children cannot be injured by aninflating front airbag when they ridein the back.

According to accident statistics, children of all ages and sizes aresafer when they are restrained in aback seat. The National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration andTransport Canada recommend thatall children age 12 and under beproperly restrained in a back seat. Even though your vehicle has an

advanced front airbag system thatautomatically turns the passenger’sfront airbag off (see page ),please follow these guidelines:

Ifthe airbag inflates, it can hit the backof the child seat with enough forceto kill or very seriously injure aninfant.

Children and airbagsChildren must always be properlyrestrained. Accident statisticssuggest that children are safer whenproperly restrained in the rearseating positions than in the frontseating position. Failure to followthese instructions may increase therisk of injury in a collision.

Airbags can kill or injure achild in a child seat.

NEVER place a rear-facing childseat in front of an active airbag. Ifyou must use a forward-facingchild seat in the front seat, movethe seat all the way back.

How does the safety belt pretensioner and airbag supplementalrestraint system work? The safety belt pretensioner andairbag SRS are designed to activatewhen the vehicle sustainslongitudinal deceleration sufficientto cause the sensors to close anelectrical circuit that initiatespretensioner activation and airbaginflation.

The fact that the pretensioners andairbags did not activate in a collisiondoes not mean that something iswrong with the system. Rather, it means the forces were not of the typesufficient to cause activation. Front airbags are designed to activate infrontal and near-frontal collisions, not rollover, side-impact, orrear-impacts unless the collision causes sufficient longitudinaldeceleration.

The airbags inflate and deflaterapidly upon activation. After airbagdeployment, it is normal to notice asmoke-like, powdery residue orsmell the burnt propellant. This mayconsist of cornstarch, talcumpowder (to lubricate the bag) orsodium compounds (e.g., bakingsoda) that result from thecombustion process that inflates theairbag. Small amounts of sodiumhydroxide may be present whichmay irritate the skin and eyes, butnone of the residue is toxic.

While the system is designed to helpreduce serious injuries, contact witha deploying airbag may also cause abrasions, swelling or temporaryhearing loss. Because airbags must inflate rapidly and with considerableforce, there is the risk of death or serious injuries such as fractures, facial and eye injuries or internal injuries, particularly to occupants whoare not properly restrained or are otherwise out of position at the timeof airbag deployment. Thus, it is extremely important that occupants beproperly restrained as far away from the airbag module as possible whilemaintaining vehicle control.

Several air bag system components get hot after inflation. Do nottouch them after inflation.

If the air bag has deployed, the air bag will not function againand must be replaced immediately. If the air bag is not

replaced, the unrepaired area will increase the risk of injury in a collision.

The SRS consists of:• driver and passenger airbag modules (which include the inflators and

airbags)

• seat-mounted side airbags (if equipped). Refer to Seat-mounted sideairbag system later in this chapter

• safety belt pretensioners

• one or more impact and safing sensors

• a readiness light and tone

The diagnostic module monitors its own internal circuits and thesupplemental airbag electrical system wiring (including the impactsensors), the system wiring, the airbag system readiness light, the airbagback up power, the airbag ignitors and safety belt pretensioners.

Front passenger sensing systemThe front passenger sensing system is designed to meet the regulatoryrequirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 208and is designed to disable (will not inflate) the front passenger’s frontalairbag under certain conditions.

The front passenger sensing system works with sensors that are part ofthe front passenger’s seat and safety belt. The sensors are designed todetect the presence of a properly seated occupant and determine if thefront passenger’s frontal airbag should be enabled (may inflate) ordisabled (will not inflate).

The front passenger sensing system will disable (will not inflate) thefront passenger’s frontal airbag if:

• the front passenger seat is unoccupied, or has small/medium objects inthe front seat.

• the system determines that an infant is present in a rear-facing infantseat that is installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

• the system determines that a small child is present in a forward-facingchild restraint that is installed according to the manufacturer’sinstructions.

• the system determines that a small child is present in a booster seat.

• a front passenger takes his/her weight off of the seat for a period oftime.

For side airbag equipped vehicles, the front passenger sensing systemwill turn off the passenger seat side airbag if:

• the seat is empty and safety belt is unbuckled.

• a child or a small person occupies the front passenger seat and thechild or small person is unbuckled.

The front passenger sensing systemuses a passenger airbag off orpass airbag off indicator which willilluminate and stay lit to remind youthat the front passenger frontalairbag is disabled. The indicatorlamp is located in the center stack of the instrument panel above theradio.Note: The indicator lamp will illuminate for a short period of time whenthe ignition is turned to the ON position to confirm it is functional. When the front passenger seat is not occupied (empty seat) or in theevent that the front passenger frontal airbag is enabled (may inflate), theindicator lamp will be unlit. The front passenger sensing system is designed to disable (will notinflate) the front passenger’s frontal airbag when a rear facing infantseat, a forward-facing child restraint, or a booster seat is detected.• When the front passenger sensing system disables (will not inflate)

the front passenger frontal airbag, the indicator lamp will illuminateand stay lit to remind you that the front passenger frontal airbag isdisabled.

• If the child restraint has been installed and the indicator lamp is notlit, then turn the vehicle off, remove the child restraint from thevehicle and reinstall the restraint following the child restraintmanufacturer’s instructions.

The front passenger sensing system is designed to enable (may inflate)the front passenger’s frontal airbag anytime the system senses that aperson of adult size is sitting properly in the front passenger seat.

• When the front passenger sensing system enables the front passengerfrontal airbag (may inflate), the indicator lamp will be unlit and stayunlit.

If a person of adult size is sitting in the front passenger’s seat, but thepassenger airbag off or pass airbag off indicator lamp is lit, it ispossible that the person isn’t sitting properly in the seat. If this happens:

• Turn the vehicle off and ask the person to place the seatback in thefull upright position.

• Have the person sit upright in the seat, centered on the seat cushion, with the person’s legs comfortably extended.

• Restart the vehicle and have the person remain in this position forabout two minutes. This will allow the system to detect that personand enable the passenger’s frontal airbag.

• If the indicator lamp remains lit even after this, the person should beadvised to ride in the rear seat.

Even with Advanced Restraints Systems, children 12 and undershould be properly restrained in the back seat.

After all occupants have adjusted their seats and put on safety belts, it’svery important that they continue to sit properly. A properly seatedoccupant sits upright, leaning against the seat back, and centered on theseat cushion, with their feet comfortably extended on the floor. Sittingimproperly can increase the chance of injury in a crash event. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, lies down, turns sideways, sits forward, leans forward or sideways, or puts one or both feet up, the chance ofinjury during a crash is greatly increased.

Sitting improperly out of position or with the seat back reclinedtoo far can take off weight from the seat cushion and affect the

decision of the front passenger sensing system, resulting in seriousinjury or death in a crash.Always sit upright against your seatback, with your feet on the floor.

The front passenger sensing system may detect small or medium objectsplaced on the seat cushion. For most objects that are in the frontpassenger seat, the passenger airbag will be disabled. Even though thepassenger airbag is disabled, the pass airbag off lamp may or may notbe illuminated according to the table below.

If you think that the status of the passenger airbag off indicator lamp isincorrect, check for the following:

• Objects lodged underneath the seat

• Objects between the seat cushion and the center console (ifequipped)

• Objects hanging off the seat back

• Objects stowed in the seatback map pocket (if equipped)

• Objects placed on the occupant’s lap

• Cargo interference with the seat

• Other passengers pushing or pulling on the seat

• Rear passenger feet and knees resting or pushing on the seat

The conditions listed above may cause the weight of a properly seatedoccupant to be incorrectly interpreted by the front passenger sensingsystem. The person in the front passenger seat may appear heavier orlighter due to the conditions described in the list above.

To reduce the risk of possible serious injury:Do not stow objects in seat back map pocket (if equipped) or

hang objects off seat back if a child is in the front passenger seat.Do not place objects underneath the front passenger seat or betweenthe seat and the center console (if equipped).Check the “passenger airbag off” or “pass airbag off” indicator lamp forproper airbag status.Failure to follow these instructions may interfere with the frontpassenger seat sensing system.

If the airbag is off, the off indicator in the passengerairbag status indicator will come on and stay on whenthe vehicle is started.

If a child restraint has been installed and the onindicator is lit, turn the vehicle off. Remove the childrestraint from the vehicle and reinstall the child restraint.

If, after reinstalling the child restraint and restartingthe vehicle, the on indicator is still lit, check to makesure that the vehicle’s seatback is not pressing the childrestraint into the seat cushion. If this happens, slightlyrecline the vehicle’s seatback and adjust the seatcushion if possible. Also make sure the child restraint isnot trapped under the vehicle head restraint. If thishappens, adjust the head restraint.

Remove any additional material from the seat such asblankets, cushions, seat covers, seat heaters or seatmassagers before reinstalling or securing the childrestraint.

If the on indicator is still lit, secure the child in the childrestraint in a rear seat position in the vehicle andcheck with your dealer/retailer.

To remove the child restraint, unbuckle the vehicle’ssafety belt and let it go back all the way.

Airbag SystemYour vehicle has the following airbags:

• A frontal airbag for the driver.

• A frontal airbag for the right front passenger.

Your vehicle may have the following airbags:

• A roof-rail airbag for the driver and the passenger

seated directly behind the driver.

• A roof-rail airbag for the right front passenger and

the person seated directly behind the right frontpassenger.

All of the airbags in your vehicle will have the wordAIRBAG embossed in the trim or on an attached labelnear the deployment opening.

For frontal airbags, the word AIRBAG will appear on themiddle part of the steering wheel for the driver andon the instrument panel for the right front passenger.

With roof-rail airbags, the word AIRBAG will appearalong the headliner or trim.

Page 21: Owner's Manuals – Passenger Air Bag Automatic On-Off

In many crashes severe enough to inflate the airbag, windshields are broken by vehicle deformation.Additional windshield breakage may also occur from theright front passenger airbag.

• Airbags are designed to inflate only once. After an

airbag inflates, you will need some new parts forthe airbag system. If you do not get them, the airbagsystem will not be there to help protect you inanother crash. A new system will include airbagmodules and possibly other parts. The servicemanual for your vehicle covers the need to replaceother parts.

• Your vehicle has a crash sensing and diagnostic

module which records information after a crash.See Vehicle Data Recording and Privacy onpage 7-16 and Event Data Recorders on page 7-17.

• Let only qualified technicians work on the airbag

systems. Improper service can mean that anairbag system will not work properly. See yourdealer/retailer for service.

Passenger Sensing System

Your vehicle has a passenger sensing system for theright front passenger’s position. The passengerairbag status indicator will be visible on the overheadconsole when you start your vehicle.

The words ON and OFF, or the symbol for on and off, will be visible during the system check. When thesystem check is complete, either the word ON or theword OFF, or the symbol for on or the symbol for off, willbe visible. See Passenger Airbag Status Indicator onpage 3-34.

The passenger sensing system will turn off the rightfront passenger’s frontal airbag under certain conditions. The driver’s airbags are not part of the passengersensing system.

The passenger sensing system works with sensors thatare part of the right front passenger’s seat and safetybelt. The sensors are designed to detect the presence ofa properly-seated occupant and determine if the rightfront passenger’s frontal airbag should be enabled (mayinflate) or not.

Accident statistics show that children are safer if theyare restrained in the rear rather than the front seat.

We recommend that children be secured in a rear seat, including: an infant or a child riding in a rear-facingchild restraint; a child riding in a forward-facing childseat; an older child riding in a booster seat; and children, who are large enough, using safety belts.

A label on your sun visor says, “Never put a rear-facingchild seat in the front.” This is because the risk to therear-facing child is so great, if the airbag deploys.

{CAUTION:

A child in a rear-facing child restraint can be

seriously injured or killed if the right front

passenger’s airbag inflates. This is because

the back of the rear-facing child restraint

would be very close to the inflating airbag.

Even though the passenger sensing system is

designed to turn off the right front passenger’s

frontal airbag if the system detects a

rear-facing child restraint, no system is

fail-safe, and no one can guarantee that an

airbag will not deploy under some unusual

circumstance, even though it is turned off. We

recommend that rear-facing child restraints be

secured in a rear seat, even if the airbag is off.

If you secure a forward-facing child restraint in

the right front seat, always move the front

passenger seat as far back as it will go. It is

better to secure the child restraint in a rear seat.

1-65

Page 22: Owner's Manuals – Passenger Air Bag Automatic On-Off

The passenger sensing system is designed to turn offthe right front passenger’s frontal airbag if:

• The right front passenger seat is unoccupied.

• The system determines that an infant is present in

a rear-facing infant seat.

• The system determines that a small child is present

in a child restraint.

• The system determines that a small child is present

in a booster seat.

• A right front passenger takes his/her weight off of

the seat for a period of time.

• The right front passenger seat is occupied by a

smaller person, such as a child who has outgrownchild restraints.

• Or, if there is a critical problem with the airbag

system or the passenger sensing system.

When the passenger sensing system has turned off theright front passenger’s frontal airbag, the off indicatorwill light and stay lit to remind you that the airbag is off.See Passenger Airbag Status Indicator on page 3-34.

If a child restraint has been installed and the on indicatoris lit, turn the vehicle off. Remove the child restraintfrom the vehicle and reinstall the child restraint followingthe child restraint manufacturer’s directions and referto Securing a Child Restraint in the Right FrontSeat Position on page 1-53.

If, after reinstalling the child restraint and restarting thevehicle, the on indicator is still lit, check to makesure that the vehicle’s seatback is not pressing the childrestraint into the seat cushion. If this happens, slightlyrecline the vehicle’s seatback and adjust the seatcushion if possible. Also make sure the child restraint isnot trapped under the vehicle head restraint. If thishappens, adjust the head restraint. See Head Restraintson page 1-10.

1-66

Remove any additional material from the seat such asblankets, cushions, seat covers, seat heaters, or seatmassagers before reinstalling or securing the childrestraint.

If the on indicator is still lit, secure the child in the childrestraint in a rear seat position in the vehicle, andcheck with your dealer/retailer.

The passenger sensing system is designed to enable(may inflate) the right front passenger’s frontalairbag anytime the system senses that a person of adultsize is sitting properly in the right front passenger’sseat. When the passenger sensing system has allowedthe airbag to be enabled, the on indicator will lightand stay lit to remind you that the airbag is active.

For some children who have outgrown child restraintsand for very small adults, the passenger sensing systemmay or may not turn off the right front passenger’sfrontal airbag, depending upon the person’s seating

posture and body build. Everyone in your vehicle whohas outgrown child restraints should wear a safetybelt properly — whether or not there is an airbag for thatperson.

If a person of adult-size is sitting in the right frontpassenger’s seat, but the off indicator is lit, it could bebecause that person is not sitting properly in the seat. Ifthis happens, turn the vehicle off, remove any additionalmaterial from the seat, such as blankets, cushions, seat covers, seat heaters or seat massagers and askthe person to place the seatback in the fully uprightposition, then sit upright in the seat, centered on the seatcushion, with the person’s legs comfortably extended.Restart the vehicle and have the person remain inthis position for two to three minutes. This will allow thesystem to detect that person and then enable theright front passenger’s frontal airbag.

2. Position the booster seat on the seat. Onlyplace it in a front facing direction. Alwaysfollow the booster seat manufacturer’s in-structions.

3. The booster seat should be positioned onthe vehicle seat so that it is stable. If neces-sary, adjust or remove the head restraint toobtain the correct booster seat fit. See“Head restraint adjustment” earlier in thissection. If the head restraint is removed, store it in a secure place. Be sure to installthe head restraint when the booster seat isremoved. If the seating position does nothave an adjustable head restraint and it isinterfering with the proper booster seat fit,try another seating position or a differentbooster seat.

4. Position the lap portion of the seat belt lowand snug on the child’s hips. Be sure tofollow the booster seat manufacturer’s in-structions for adjusting the belt routing.

5. Pull the shoulder belt portion of the seat belttoward the retractor to take up extra slack.Be sure the shoulder belt is positionedacross the top, middle portion of the child’sshoulder. Be sure to follow the booster seatmanufacturer’s instructions for adjusting thebelt routing.

6. Follow the warnings, cautions and instruc-tions for properly fastening a seat beltshown in the “Three-point seat belt withretractor” earlier in this section.

In a side impact, the curtain and rollover air bags are designed toinflate on the side where the vehicle is impacted. In a rollover, both curtain and rollover air bags aredesigned to inflate and remain inflated for a shorttime.

These supplemental restraint systems are de-signed to supplement the crash protection pro-vided by the seat belts and are not a substitutefor them. Seat belts should always be correctlyworn and the occupant seated a suitable dis-tance away from the steering wheel, instrumentpanel and door finishers. See “Seat belts” earlierin this section for instructions and precautions onseat belt usage.

The supplemental air bags operate onlywhen the ignition switch is in the ON orSTART position.

After turning the ignition key to the ONposition, the supplemental air bag warninglight illuminates. The supplemental air bagwarning light will turn off after about 7seconds if the system is operational.

WARNING

● The front air bags ordinarily will notinflate in the event of a side impact, rearimpact, rollover, or lower severity fron-tal collision. Always wear your seatbelts to help reduce the risk or severityof injury in various kinds of accidents.

● The front passenger air bag will notinflate if the passenger air bag statuslight is lit or if the front passenger seatis unoccupied. See “Front passenger airbag and status light” later in thissection.

● The seat belts and the front air bags aremost effective when you are sitting wellback and upright in the seat. The frontair bags inflate with great force. Evenwith the NISSANAdvanced Air Bag Sys-tem, if you are unrestrained, leaningforward, sitting sideways or out of posi-tion in anyway, you are at greater risk ofinjury or death in a crash. You may alsoreceive serious or fatal injuries from thefront air bag if you are up against itwhen it inflates. Always sit back againstthe seatback and as far away as practi-cal from the steering wheel or instru-ment panel. Always use the seat belts.

NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System(front seats)

This vehicle is equipped with the NISSAN Ad-vanced Air Bag System for the driver and frontpassenger seats. This system is designed tomeet certification requirements under U.S. regu-lations. It is also permitted in Canada. However, all of the information, cautions and warn-ings in this manual still apply and must befollowed.

The driver supplemental front-impact air bag islocated in the center of the steering wheel. Thepassenger supplemental front-impact air bag ismounted in the dashboard above the glove box.The front air bags are designed to inflate in higherseverity frontal collisions, although they may in-flate if the forces in another type of collision aresimilar to those of a higher severity frontal impact. They may not inflate in certain frontal collisions.Vehicle damage (or lack of it) is not always anindication of proper front air bag system opera-tion.

The NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System has dualstage inflators. It also monitors information fromthe crash zone sensor, the Air bag Control Unit(ACU), seat belt buckle sensors, occupant clas-sification sensor (pressure sensor) and passen-ger seat belt tension sensor. Inflator operation isbased on the severity of a collision and seat belt

usage for the driver. For the front passenger, itadditionally monitors the weight of an occupantor object on the seat and seat belt tension. Basedon information from the sensors, only one front airbag may inflate in a crash, depending on thecrash severity and whether the front occupantsare belted or unbelted. Additionally, the frontpassenger air bag may be automatically turnedOFF under some conditions, depending on theweight detected on the passenger seat and howthe seat belt is used. If the front passenger air bagis OFF, the passenger air bag status light will beilluminated (if the seat is unoccupied, the light willnot be illuminated, but the air bag will be off). See“Front passenger air bag and status light” later inthis section for further details. One front air baginflating does not indicate improper performanceof the system.

If you have any questions about your air bagsystem, please contact NISSAN or your NISSANdealer. If you are considering modification of yourvehicle due to a disability, you may also contactNISSAN. Contact information is contained in thefront of this Owner’s Manual.

When a front air bag inflates, a fairly loud noisemay be heard, followed by the release of smoke. This smoke is not harmful and does not indicate afire. Care should be taken to not inhale it, as it may

cause irritation and choking. Those with a historyof a breathing condition should get fresh airpromptly.

Front air bags, along with the use of seat belts, help to cushion the impact force on the face andchest of the front occupants. They can help savelives and reduce serious injuries. However, aninflating front air bag may cause facial abrasionsor other injuries. Front air bags do not providerestraint to the lower body.

Even with NISSAN advanced air bags, seat beltsshould be correctly worn and the driver and pas-senger seated upright as far as practical awayfrom the steering wheel or instrument panel. Thefront air bags inflate quickly in order to helpprotect the front occupants. Because of this, theforce of the front air bag inflating can increase therisk of injury if the occupant is too close to, or isagainst, the front air bag module during inflation.

The front air bags deflate quickly after a collision.

The front air bags operate only when theignition switch is in the ON or START posi-tion.

After turning the ignition key to the ONposition, the supplemental air bag warninglight illuminates. The supplemental air bagwarning light will turn off after about 7seconds if the system is operational.

Front passenger air bag and status light

WARNING

The front passenger air bag is designed toautomatically turn OFF under some con-ditions. Read this section carefully tolearn how it operates. Proper use of theseat, seat belt and child restraints is nec-essary for most effective protection. Fail-ure to follow all instructions in thismanual concerning the use of seats, seatbelts and child restraints can increase therisk or severity of injury in an accident.

Status light

The front passenger air bag status light islocated near the climate controls. The light oper-ates as follows:

● Unoccupied passenger’s seat: The isOFF and the front passenger air bag is OFFand will not inflate in a crash.

● Passenger’s seat occupied by a small adult, child or child restraint as outlined in thissection: The illuminates to indicatethat the front passenger air bag is OFF andwill not inflate in a crash.

● Occupied passenger seat and the passen-ger meet the conditions outlined in this sec-tion: The light is OFF to indicate thatthe front passenger air bag is operational.

Front passenger air bag

The front passenger air bag is designed to auto-matically turn OFF when the vehicle is operatedunder some conditions as described below inaccordance with U.S. regulations. If the frontpassenger air bag is OFF, it will not inflate in acrash. The driver air bag and other air bags in yourvehicle are not part of this system.

The purpose of the regulation is to help reducethe risk of injury or death from an inflating air bagto certain front passenger seat occupants, such

as children, by requiring the air bag to be auto-matically turned OFF. Certain sensors are usedto meet the requirements.

One sensor used is the occupant classificationsensor (pressure sensor). It is in the bottom of thefront passenger seat cushion and is designed todetect an occupant and objects on the seat byweight. It works together with seat belt sensorsdescribed later. For example, if a child is in thefront passenger seat, the Advanced Air Bag Sys-tem is designed to turn the passenger air bagOFF in accordance with the regulations. Also, if achild restraint of the type specified in the regula-tions is on the seat, its weight and the child’sweight can be detected and cause the air bag toturn OFF. Occupant classification sensor opera-tion can vary depending on the front passengerseat belt sensors.

The front passenger seat belt sensors are de-signed to detect if the seat belt is buckled and theamount of tension on the seat belt, such as whenit is in the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR)mode (child restraint mode). Based on theweight on the seat detected by the occupantclassification sensor and the belt tension de-tected on the seat belt, the Advanced Air BagSystem determines whether the front passengerair bag should be automatically turned OFF asrequired by the regulations.

Page 28: Owner's Manuals – Passenger Air Bag Automatic On-Off

Front passenger seat adult occupants who areproperly seated and using the seat belt as out-lined in this manual should not cause the passen-ger air bag to be automatically turned OFF. Forsmall adults it may be turned OFF, however if theoccupant takes his/her weight off the seat cush-ion (for example, by not sitting upright, by sittingon an edge of the seat, or by otherwise being outof position), this could cause the sensor to turnthe air bag OFF. In addition, if the occupantimproperly uses the seat belt in the ALR mode, this could cause the air bag to be turned OFF.Always be sure to be seated andwearing the seatbelt properly for the most effective protection bythe seat belt and supplemental air bag.

NISSAN recommends that pre-teens and chil-dren be properly restrained in a rear seat.NISSAN also recommends that appropriate childrestraints and booster seats be properly installedin a rear seat. If this is not possible, the occupantclassification sensor and seat belt sensors aredesigned to operate as described above to turnthe front passenger air bag OFF for specifiedchild restraints as required by the regulations.Failing to properly secure child restraints and touse the ALR mode may allow the restraint to tip ormove in an accident or sudden stop. This can alsoresult in the passenger air bag inflating in a crashinstead of being OFF. See “Child restraints” ear-lier in this section for proper use and installation.

If the front passenger seat is not occupied thepassenger air bag is designed not to inflate in acrash. However, heavy objects placed on theseat could result in air bag inflation, because ofthe object’s weight detected by the occupantclassification sensor. Other conditions could alsoresult in air bag inflation, such as if a child isstanding on the seat, or if two children are on theseat, contrary to the instructions in this manual.Always be sure that you and all vehicle occupantsare seated and restrained properly.

Using the passenger air bag status light, you canmonitor when the front passenger air bag is au-tomatically turned OFF with the seat occupied. The light will not illuminate when the front pas-senger seat is unoccupied.

If an adult occupant is in the seat but the passen-ger air bag status light is illuminated (indicatingthat the air bag is OFF), it could be that theperson is a small adult, or is not sitting on the seatproperly or not using the seat belt properly.

If a child restraint must be used in the front seat, the passenger air bag status light may or may notbe illuminated, depending on the size of the childand the type of child restraint being used. If the airbag status light is not illuminated (indicating thatthe air bag might inflate in a crash), it could bethat the child restraint or seat belt is not beingused properly. Make sure that the child restraint is

installed properly, the seat belt is used properlyand the occupant is positioned properly. If the airbag status light is not illuminated, reposition theoccupant or child restraint in a rear seat.

If the passenger air bag status light will not illu-minate even though you believe that the childrestraint, the seat belts and the occupant areproperly positioned, the system may be sensingan unoccupied seat (in which case the air bag isOFF). Your NISSAN dealer can check that thesystem is OFF by using a special tool. However, until you have confirmed with your dealer thatyour air bag is working properly, reposition theoccupant or child restraint in a rear seat.

The air bag system and passenger air bag statuslight will take a few seconds to register a changein the passenger seat status. For example, if alarge adult who is sitting in the front passengerseat exits the vehicle, the passenger air bagstatus light will go from OFF to ON for a fewseconds and then to OFF. This is normal systemoperation and does not indicate a malfunction.

If a malfunction occurs in the front passenger airbag system, the supplemental air bag warninglight , located in the meter and gauges areain the center of the instrument panel, will blink.Have the system checked by a NISSAN dealer.

For example, do notchange the front seats by placing mate-rial on the seat cushion or by installingadditional trim material, such as seatcovers, on the seat that are not specifi-cally designed to assure proper air bagoperation. Additionally, do not stow anyobjects under the front passenger seator the seat cushion and seatback. Suchobjects may interfere with the properoperation of the occupant classifica-tion sensor (pressure sensor).

● No unauthorized changes should bemade to any components or wiring ofthe seat belt system. This may affect thefront air bag system. Tampering withthe seat belt system may result in seri-ous personal injury.

● Work on and around the front air bagsystem should be done by a NISSANdealer. Installation of electrical equip-ment should also be done by a NISSANdealer. The Supplemental RestraintSystem (SRS) wiring should not bemodified or disconnected. Unautho-rized electrical test equipment andprobing devices should not be used onthe air bag system.

● A cracked windshield should be re-placed immediately by a qualified re-pair facility. A cracked windshield couldaffect the function of the supplementalair bag system.

● The SRS wiring harness connectors areyellow and orange for easyidentification.

Roof-mounted curtain side-impact androllover supplemental air bag system (if soequipped): This system can help cushion theimpact force to the head of occupants in frontand rear outboard seating positions in certainside impact or rollover collisions. In a side impact, the curtain and rollover air bags are designed toinflate on the side where the vehicle is impacted. In a rollover both curtain and rollover air bags aredesigned to inflate and remain inflated for a shorttime.

The supplemental air bagwarning light will turn off after about 7 sec-onds if the system is operational.

● The driver and front passenger seat beltbuckles are equipped with sensors thatdetect if the seat belts are fastened. TheAdvanced Air Bag System monitors theseverity of a collision and seat belt us-age then inflates the air bags. Failure toproperly wear seat belts can increasethe risk or severity of injury in anaccident.

● The front passenger seat is equippedwith an occupant classification sensor(pressure sensor) that turns the frontpassenger air bag OFF under someconditions. This sensor is only used inthis seat. Failure to be properly seatedand wearing the seat belt can increasethe risk or severity of injury in an acci-dent. See “Front Passenger air bag andstatus light” later in this section.

● Keep hands on the outside of the steer-ing wheel. Placing them inside thesteering wheel rim could increase therisk that they are injured when the frontair bag inflates.

all of the information, cautions and warn-ings in this manual still apply and must befollowed.

The driver supplemental front-impact air bag islocated in the center of the steering wheel. Thepassenger supplemental front-impact air bag ismounted in the dashboard above the glove box.The supplemental front air bags are designed toinflate in higher severity frontal collisions, al-though they may inflate if the forces in anothertype of collision are similar to those of a higherseverity frontal impact. They may not inflate incertain frontal collisions. Vehicle damage (or lackof it) is not always an indication of proper front airbag system operation.

The NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System has dualstage inflators. It also monitors information fromthe crash zone sensor, the Air Bag Control Unit(ACU), seat belt buckle sensors, occupant clas-sification sensor (pressure sensor) and right frontpassenger seat belt tension sensor. Inflator op-eration is based on the severity of a collision andseat belt usage for the driver. For the right frontpassenger, it additionally monitors the weight ofan occupant or object on the seat and seat belttension. Based on information from the sensors, only one front air bag may inflate in a crash, depending on the crash severity and whether thefront occupants are belted or unbelted. Addition-ally, the right front passenger air bag may be

automatically turnedOFF under some conditions, depending on the weight detected on the pas-senger seat and how the seat belt is used. If thefront passenger air bag is OFF, the passenger airbag status light will be illuminated (if the seat isunoccupied, the light will not be illuminated, butthe air bag will be off). See “Front passenger airbag and status light” later in this section forfurther details. One front air bag inflating does notindicate improper performance of the system.

If you have any questions about your air bagsystem, please contact NISSAN or your NISSANdealer. If you are considering modification of yourvehicle due to a disability, you may also contactNISSAN. Contact information is contained in thebeginning of this Owner’s Manual.

When a front air bag inflates, a fairly loud noisemay be heard, followed by the release of smoke. This smoke is not harmful and does not indicate afire. Care should be taken to not inhale it, as it maycause irritation and choking. Those with a historyof a breathing condition should get fresh airpromptly.

Front air bags, along with the use of seat belts, help to cushion the impact force on the face andchest of the driver and right front passenger. Theycan help save lives and reduce serious injuries. However, an inflating front air bag may cause

facial abrasions or other injuries. Front air bagsdo not provide restraint to the lower body.

The supplemental air bagwarning light will turn off after about 7 sec-onds if the system is operational.

The right front passenger air bag statuslight is located under the climate controls. The light operates as follows:

● Unoccupied passenger’s seat: The isOFF and the front passenger air bag is OFFand will not inflate in a crash.

● Passenger’s seat occupied by a small adult, child or child restraint as outlined in thissection: The illuminates to indicatethat the front passenger air bag is OFF andwill not inflate in a crash.

● Occupied passenger seat and the passen-ger meets the conditions outlined in thissection: The light is OFF to indicatethat the front passenger air bag is opera-tional.

Front passenger air bag

The right front passenger air bag is designed toautomatically turn OFF when the vehicle is oper-ated under some conditions as described belowin accordance with U.S. regulations. If the frontpassenger air bag is OFF, it will not inflate in acrash. The driver air bag and other air bags in yourvehicle are not part of this system.

The purpose of the regulation is to help reducethe risk of injury or death from an inflating air bag

to certain front passenger seat occupants, suchas children, by requiring the air bag to be auto-matically turned OFF. Certain sensors are usedto meet the requirements.

One sensor used is the occupant classificationsensor (pressure sensor). It is in the bottom of theright front passenger seat cushion and is de-signed to detect an occupant and objects on theright front seat by weight. It works together withseat belt sensors described later. For example, ifa child is in the right front passenger seat, theAdvanced Air Bag System is designed to turn thepassenger air bag OFF in accordance with theregulations. Also, if a child restraint of the typespecified in the regulations is on the seat, itsweight and the child’s weight can be detectedand cause the air bag to turn OFF. Occupantclassification sensor operation can vary depend-ing on the right front passenger seat belt sensors.

The front passenger seat belt sensors are de-signed to detect if the seat belt is buckled and theamount of tension on the seat belt, such as whenit is in the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR)mode (child restraint mode). Based on theweight on the seat detected by the occupantclassification sensor and the belt tension de-tected on the seat belt, the Advanced Air BagSystem determines whether the front passengerair bag should be automatically turned OFF, asrequired by the regulations.

Page 40: Owner's Manuals – Passenger Air Bag Automatic On-Off

Front passenger seat adult occupants who areproperly seated and using the seat belt as out-lined in this manual should not cause the passen-ger air bag to be automatically turned OFF. Forsmall adults it may be turned OFF; however, if theoccupant takes his/her weight off the seat cush-ion (for example, by not sitting upright, by sittingon an edge of the seat, or by otherwise being outof position), this could cause the sensor to turnthe air bag OFF. In addition, if the occupantimproperly uses the seat belt in the ALR mode(child restraint mode), this could cause the airbag to be turned OFF. Always be sure to beseated and wearing the seat belt properly for themost effective protection by the seat belt andsupplemental air bag.

NISSAN recommends that pre-teens and chil-dren be properly restrained in a rear seat.NISSAN also recommends that appropriate childrestraints and booster seats be properly installedin a rear seat. If this is not possible, the occupantclassification sensor and seat belt sensors aredesigned to operate as described above to turnthe front passenger air bag OFF for specifiedchild restraints as required by the regulations.Failing to properly secure child restraints and touse the ALR mode (child restraint mode) mayallow the restraint to tip or move in an accident orsudden stop. This can also result in the passen-ger air bag inflating in a crash instead of being

OFF. See “Child restraints” earlier in this sectionfor proper use and installation.

If the right front passenger seat is not occupiedthe passenger air bag is designed not to inflate ina crash.

The light will not illuminate when the right frontpassenger seat is unoccupied.

If the airbag status light is not illuminated (indicating thatthe air bag might inflate in a crash), it could be

that the child restraint or seat belt is not beingused properly. Make sure that the child restraint isinstalled properly, the seat belt is used properlyand the occupant is positioned properly.

If a malfunction occurs in the front passenger airbag system, the supplemental air bag warninglight , located in the meter and gauges areaon the driver’s side of the instrument panel, willblink. Have the system checked by a NISSANdealer.

● Do not place any objects on the steer-ing wheel pad or on the instrumentpanel. Also, do not place any objectsbetween any occupant and the steeringwheel or instrument panel. Such ob-jects may become dangerous projec-tiles and cause injury if the front airbags inflate.

● Immediately after inflation, severalfront air bag system components will behot. Do not touch them; you may se-verely burn yourself.

● No unauthorized changes should bemade to any components or wiring ofthe supplemental air bag system. This isto prevent accidental inflation of thesupplemental air bag or damage to thesupplemental air bag system.

● Do not make unauthorized changes toyour vehicle’s electrical system, sus-pension system or front end structure. This could affect proper operation ofthe front air bag system.

● Tampering with the front air bag systemmay result in serious personal injury.Tampering includes changes to thesteering wheel and the instrumentpanel assembly by placing materialover the steering wheel pad and abovethe instrument panel or by installingadditional trim material around the airbag system.

● Modifying or tampering with the frontpassenger seat may result in seriouspersonal injury.

When selling your vehicle, we request that youinform the buyer about the front air bag systemand guide the buyer to the appropriate sectionsin this Owner’s Manual.

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) PrecautionsThe front and side supplemental restraint systems (SRS) include 6 air bags. Please verifythe air bags equipped on your vehicle by locating the “SRS AIRBAG” locationindicators. These indicators are visible in the area where the air bags are installed. The air bags are installed in the following locations:

l The steering wheel hub (driver air bag)l The front passenger dashboard (front passenger air bag)l The outboard sides of the front seatbacks (side air bags)l The front and rear window pillars, and the roof edge along both sides (curtain air bags)

The air bag supplemental restraint systems are designed to provide supplemental protectionin certain situations, so seat belts are always important in the following ways:

Without seat belt usage, the air bags cannot provide adequate protection during an accident.Seat belt usage is necessary to:l Keep the occupant from being thrown into an inflating air bag.l Reduce the possibility of injuries during an accident that is not designed for air baginflation, such as roll-over or rear impact.

l Reduce the possibility of injuries in frontal, near frontal, side collisions that are notsevere enough to activate the air bags.

l Reduce the possibility of being thrown from your vehicle.l Reduce the possibility of injuries to lower body and legs during an accident because theair bags provide no protection to these parts of the body.

l Hold the driver in a position which allows better control of the vehicle.

Your vehicle is also equipped with a driver and front passenger occupantclassification system. For details, refer to the driver and front passenger occupantclassification system (page 2-56).

Small children must be protected by a child-restraint system as stipulated by law in everystate and province. In certain states and provinces, larger children must use a child-restraintsystem (page 2-28).

Carefully consider which child-restraint system is necessary for your child and follow theinstallation directions in this Owner's Manual as well as the child-restraint systemmanufacturer's instructions.

WARNINGSeat belts must be worn in air bag equipped vehicles:

Depending only on the air bags for protection during an accident is dangerous.Alone, air bags may not prevent serious injuries. The appropriate air bags can beexpected to inflate only in the first accident, such as frontal, near frontal, sidecollisions that are at least moderate. Vehicle occupants should always wear seatbelts.

Children should not ride in the front passenger seat:Placing a child, 12 years or under, in the front seat is dangerous. The child could behit by a deploying air bag and be seriously injured or even killed. Even if the frontpassenger air bag deactivation indicator light illuminates, always move the frontpassenger seat as far back as possible. A sleeping child is more likely to lean againstthe door and be hit by the side air bag in a moderate, right-side collision. Wheneverpossible, always secure a child 12 years and under on the rear seat with anappropriate child-restraint system for the child's age and size.

Never use a rear-facing child-restraint system in the front seat with an air bag thatcould deploy:

Rear-facing child-restraint systems on the front seat are particularly dangerous eventhough you may feel assured that a front passenger air bag will not deploy based onthe fact that the front passenger air bag deactivation indicator light illuminates. The child-restraint system can be hit by a deploying air bag and moved violentlybackward resulting in serious injury or death to the child.

Do not sit too close to the driver and front passenger air bags:Sitting too close to the driver and front passenger air bag modules or placing handsor feet on them is extremely dangerous. The driver and front passenger air bagsinflate with great force and speed. Serious injuries could occur if someone is tooclose. The driver should always hold onto only the rim of the steering wheel. Thefront seat passenger should keep both feet on the floor. Front seat occupants shouldadjust their seats as far back as possible and always sit upright against theseatbacks with seat belts worn properly.

Driver and Front Passenger Occupant Classification SystemFirst, please read “Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Precautions” (page 2-44)carefully.

qDriver Seat Slide Position Sensor

Your vehicle is equipped with a driver seat slide position sensor as a part of thesupplemental restraint system. The sensor is located under the driver seat. The sensordetermines whether the driver seat is fore or aft of a reference position and sends the seatposition to the diagnostic module (SAS unit). The SAS unit is designed to control thedeployment of the driver air bag depending on how close the driver seat is to the steeringwheel. The air bag/front seat belt pretensioner system warning light flashes if the sensor has apossible malfunction (page 2-51).

qFront Passenger Seat Weight Sensors

Your vehicle is equipped with a front passenger seat weight sensors as a part of thesupplemental restraint system. These sensors are located under both of the front passengerseat rails. These sensors determine the total seated weight on the front passenger seat. TheSAS unit is designed to prevent the front passenger front and side air bags and seat beltpretensioner system from deploying if the total seated weight is less than approximately 30kg (66 lbs).To reduce the chance of injuries caused by deployment of the front passenger air bag, thesystem deactivates the front passenger front and side air bags and also the seat beltpretensioner system when:

l There is no passenger in the front passenger seat. (The front passenger air bagdeactivation indicator light does not illuminate.)

l The total seated weight on the front passenger seat is less than approximately 30 kg (66lbs). (The front passenger air bag deactivation indicator light illuminates.)

This system shuts off the front passenger front and side air bags and seat belt pretensionersystem, so make sure the front passenger air bag deactivation indicator light illuminatesaccording to the following table.

The air bag/front seat belt pretensioner system warning light flashes and the frontpassenger air bag deactivation indicator light illuminates if the sensors have a possiblemalfunction. If this happens, the front passenger front and side air bags and seat beltpretensioner system will not deploy.

WARNINGDo not decrease the total seated weight on the front passenger seat:

When an adult or large child sits on the front passenger seat, decreasing the totalseated weight on the front passenger seat from the total seated weight ofapproximately 42 kg (93 lbs) required for air bag deployment is dangerous. The frontpassenger seat weight sensors will detect the reduced total seated weight conditionand the front passenger front and side air bags and seat belt pretensioner systemwill not deploy during an accident. The front passenger will not have thesupplementary protection of the air bag, which could result in serious injury.Decreasing the total seated weight on the front passenger seat from the total seatedweight of approximately 42 kg (93 lbs) could result in an air bag not deploying underthe following conditions, for example:Ø A rear passenger pushes up on the front passenger seat with their feet.Ø Luggage or other items placed under the front passenger seat or between the

front passenger seat and driver seat that push up the front passenger seatbottom.

Ø The front passenger seat occupant sits in a manner that does not place the entireweight of the occupant on the seat such as by sitting too close to the door, grasping the assist grip or the rim of the moonroof and sitting with the seatbackreclined too far.

Ø Any accessories which might decrease the total seated weight on the frontpassenger seat are attached to the front passenger seat.

The front passenger front and side air bags and seat belt pretensioner systems willdeactivate if the total seated weight on the front passenger seat is close to 30 kg (66lbs) and they will reactivate before the weight exceeds 42 kg (93 lbs).

Do not increase the total seated weight on the front passenger seat:When an infant or small child sits on the front passenger seat, increasing the totalseated weight on the front passenger seat from the total seated weight ofapproximately 30 kg (66 lbs) is dangerous. The front passenger seat weight sensorswill detect the increased total seated weight, which could result in the unexpecteddeployment of the front passenger front and side air bags and seat belt pretensionersystem in an accident and may cause serious injury. Increasing the total seatedweight on the front passenger seat beyond the total seated weight of approximately30 kg (66 lbs) could result in the front passenger front and side air bags and seatbelt pretensioner system deployment in an accident under the following conditions, for example:Ø Luggage or other items are placed on the seat with the child in the child-restraint

system.Ø A rear passenger or luggage push or pull down on the front passenger seatback.Ø A rear passenger steps on the front passenger seat rails with their feet.Ø Luggage or other items are placed on the seatback or hung on the head restraint.Ø Heavy items are placed in the seatback map pocket.Ø The seat is washed.Ø Liquids are spilled on the seat.Ø The front passenger seat is moved backward, pushing into luggage or other items

placed behind it.Ø The front passenger seatback contacts the rear seat.Ø Luggage or other items are placed between the front passenger seat and driver

seat.Ø Any accessories which might increase the total seated weight on the front

passenger seat are attached to the front passenger seat. The front passenger front and side air bags and seat belt pretensioner systems willdeactivate if the total seated weight on the front passenger seat is close to 30 kg (66lbs) and they will reactivate before the weight exceeds 42 kg (93 lbs).

CAUTIONØ To assure proper deployment of the front air bag and to prevent damage to the

sensors in the front seat bottoms:Ø Do not place sharp objects on the front seat bottoms or leave heavy luggage on

them.Ø Do not spill any liquids on the front seats or under the front seats.

Ø To allow the sensors to function properly, always perform the following:Ø Adjust the front seats as far back as possible and always sit upright against the

seatbacks with seat belts worn properly.Ø If you place your child on the front passenger seat, secure the child-restraint

system properly and slide the front passenger seat as far back as possible (page2-36).

n Front passenger occupant classification system precautionsl Do not recline the front passenger seatback so far that it touches a rear

seat. This may cause the “AIR BAG OFF” indicator light to be illuminated, which indicates that the passenger’s airbags will not deploy in the event ofa severe accident. If the seatback touches the rear seat, return the seat-back to a position where it does not touch the rear seat. Keep the frontpassenger seatback as upright as possible when the vehicle is moving.Reclining the seatback excessively may lessen the effectiveness of theseat belt system.

l If an adult sits in the front passenger seat, the “AIR BAG ON” indicatorlight is illuminated. If the “AIR BAG OFF” indicator is illuminated, ask thepassenger to sit up straight, well back in the seat, feet on the floor, andwith the seat belt worn correctly. If the “AIR BAG OFF” indicator stillremains illuminated, either ask the passenger to move to the rear seat, orif that is not possible, move the front passenger seat fully rearward.

l When it is unavoidable to install a forward-facing child restraint system onthe front passenger seat, install the child restraint system on the front pas-senger seat in the proper order. (→P. 122)

l Do not modify or remove the front seats.

l Do not kick the front passenger seat or subject it to severe impact. Other-wise, the SRS warning light may come on to indicate a malfunction of thedetection system. In this case, contact your Toyota dealer immediately.

l Child restraint systems installed on the rear seat should not contact thefront seatbacks.

l Do not use a seat accessory, such as a cushion and seat cover, that cov-ers the seat cushion surface.

l Do not modify or replace the upholstery of the front seat.

Child restraint systems

Points to remember

Studies have shown that installing a child restraint system on a rearseat is much safer than installing one on the front passenger seat.

l Choose a child restraint system that suits your vehicle and isappropriate to the age and size of the child.

l For installation details, follow the instructions provided with thechild restraint system. General installation instructions are provided in this manual. (→P. 122)

A child restraint system for a small child or baby must itself be prop-erly restrained on the seat with the lap portion of the lap/shoulderbelt.

The laws of all 50 states of the U.S.A. and Canada now require theuse of child restraint systems.

For frontal airbags, the wordAIRBAG will appear on the middlepart of the steering wheel for thedriver and on the instrument panelfor the right front passenger.

With seat‐mounted side impactairbags, the word AIRBAG willappear on the side of the seatbackclosest to the door.

With roof-rail airbags, the wordAIRBAG will appear along theheadliner or trim.

Airbags are designed to supplementthe protection provided by safetybelts. Even though today's airbagsare also designed to help reducethe risk of injury from the force of aninflating bag, all airbags must inflatevery quickly to do their job.

Here are the most important thingsto know about the airbag system:

{ WARNING

You can be severely injured orkilled in a crash if you are notwearing your safety belt— even ifyou have airbags. Airbags aredesigned to work with safetybelts, but do not replace them. Also, airbags are not designed todeploy in every crash. In somecrashes safety belts are your onlyrestraint. See When Should anAirbag Inflate? on page 3‑24.

Wearing your safety belt during acrash helps reduce your chanceof hitting things inside the vehicleor being ejected from it. Airbagsare “supplemental restraints” tothe safety belts. Everyone in yourvehicle should wear a safety beltproperly—whether or not there isan airbag for that person.

{ WARNING

Because airbags inflate with greatforce and faster than the blink ofan eye, anyone who is upagainst, or very close to anyairbag when it inflates can beseriously injured or killed. Do notsit unnecessarily close to anyairbag, as you would be if sittingon the edge of the seat or leaningforward. Safety belts help keepyou in position before and duringa crash. Always wear a safetybelt, even with airbags. The drivershould sit as far back as possiblewhile still maintaining control ofthe vehicle.

Occupants should not lean on orsleep against the door or sidewindows in seating positions withseat-mounted side impact airbagsand/or roof-rail airbags.

{ WARNING

Children who are up against,or very close to, any airbagwhen it inflates can be seriouslyinjured or killed. Airbags pluslap-shoulder belts offer protectionfor adults and older children, butnot for young children and infants.Neither the vehicle safety beltsystem nor its airbag system isdesigned for them. Youngchildren and infants need theprotection that a child restraintsystem can provide. Alwayssecure children properly in thevehicle. To read how, see OlderChildren on page 3‑35 or Infantsand Young Children onpage 3‑37.

There is an airbag readiness lighton the instrument panel cluster, which shows the airbag symbol.

The system checks the airbagelectrical system for malfunctions. The light tells you if there is anelectrical problem. See AirbagReadiness Light on page 5‑15 formore information.

Passenger SensingSystem

If the vehicle has the passengerairbag status indicator pictured inthe following illustration, then thevehicle has a passenger sensingsystem for the right front passengerposition. The passenger airbagstatus indicator, if equipped, isvisible on the overhead consolewhen the vehicle is started.

In addition, if the vehicle has apassenger sensing system for theright front passenger position, thelabel on the vehicle's sun visorsrefers to “ADVANCED AIRBAGS”.

United States

Canada and Mexico

The words ON and OFF, or thesymbols for on and off, will bevisible during the system check. If you are using remote start,if equipped, to start the vehicle froma distance, you may not see thesystem check. When the systemcheck is complete, either the wordON or OFF, or the symbol for on oroff, will be visible. See PassengerAirbag Status Indicator onpage 5‑16.

The passenger sensing system willturn off the right front passengerfrontal airbag under certainconditions. The driver airbag, seat‐mounted side impact airbags (ifequipped) and the roof-rail airbagsare not affected by the passengersensing system.

The passenger sensing systemworks with sensors that are part ofthe right front passenger seat andsafety belt. The sensors aredesigned to detect the presence ofa properly-seated occupant anddetermine if the right frontpassenger frontal airbag should beenabled (may inflate) or not.

According to accident statistics, children are safer when properlysecured in a rear seat in the correctchild restraint for their weightand size.

We recommend that children besecured in a rear seat, including:an infant or a child riding in arear-facing child restraint; a childriding in a forward-facing child seat; Seats and Restraints 3-29

an older child riding in a boosterseat; and children, who are largeenough, using safety belts.

A label on the sun visor says,“Never put a rear-facing child seat inthe front.” This is because the risk tothe rear-facing child is so great,if the airbag deploys.

{ WARNING

A child in a rear-facing childrestraint can be seriouslyinjured or killed if the right frontpassenger airbag inflates. This is because the back of therear-facing child restraint wouldbe very close to the inflatingairbag. A child in a forward-facingchild restraint can be seriouslyinjured or killed if the right frontpassenger airbag inflates and thepassenger seat is in a forwardposition.

(Continued)

WARNING (Continued)

Even if the passenger sensingsystem has turned off the rightfront passenger frontal airbag, nosystem is fail-safe. No one canguarantee that an airbag will notdeploy under some unusualcircumstance, even though theairbag is turned off.

Secure rear-facing child restraintsin a rear seat, even if theairbag is off. If you secure aforward-facing child restraint inthe right front seat, always movethe front passenger seat as farback as it will go. It is better tosecure the child restraint in arear seat.

The passenger sensing system isdesigned to turn off the right frontpassenger frontal airbag if:

. The right front passenger seat isunoccupied.

. The system determines an infantis present in a child restraint.

. A right front passenger takeshis/her weight off of the seat fora period of time.

. There is a critical problemwith the airbag system or thepassenger sensing system.

When the passenger sensingsystem has turned off the right frontpassenger frontal airbag, the offindicator will light and stay lit as areminder that the airbag is off. SeePassenger Airbag Status Indicatoron page 5‑16.

The passenger sensing system isdesigned to turn on (may inflate) theright front passenger frontal airbaganytime the system senses that aperson of adult size is sittingproperly in the right frontpassenger seat.

When the passenger sensingsystem has allowed the airbag to beenabled, the on indicator will lightand stay lit as a reminder that theairbag is active.

3-30 Seats and Restraints

For some children, includingchildren in child restraints, and for very small adults, thepassenger sensing system may ormay not turn off the right frontpassenger frontal airbag, dependingupon the person's seating postureand body build. Everyone in thevehicle who has outgrown childrestraints should wear a safety beltproperly — whether or not there isan airbag for that person.

{ WARNING

If the airbag readiness light evercomes on and stays on, it meansthat something may be wrongwith the airbag system. To helpavoid injury to yourself or others, have the vehicle serviced rightaway. See Airbag ReadinessLight on page 5‑15 for moreinformation, including importantsafety information.

If the On Indicator is Lit for aChild Restraint

If a child restraint has been installedand the on indicator is lit:

1. Turn the vehicle off.

2. Remove the child restraint fromthe vehicle.

3. Remove any additional itemsfrom the seat such as blankets, cushions, seat covers, seatheaters, or seat massagers.

4. Reinstall the child restraintfollowing the directionsprovided by the child restraintmanufacturer and refer toSecuring Child Restraints (RightFront Seat Position) onpage 3‑52 or Securing ChildRestraints (Center Front SeatPosition) on page 3‑51 orSecuring Child Restraints (RearSeat Position) on page 3‑49.

5. If, after reinstalling the childrestraint and restarting thevehicle, the on indicator is still lit, turn the vehicle off. Then slightlyrecline the vehicle seatbackand adjust the seat cushion,if adjustable, to make sure thatthe vehicle seatback is notpushing the child restraint intothe seat cushion.

Also make sure the childrestraint is not trapped under thevehicle head restraint. If thishappens, adjust the headrestraint. See Head Restraintson page 3‑2.

6. Restart the vehicle.

The passenger sensing systemmay or may not turn off theairbag for a child in a childrestraint depending upon thechild’s seating posture and bodybuild. It is better to secure thechild restraint in a rear seat.

Seats and Restraints 3-31

If the Off Indicator is Lit for anAdult-Size Occupant

If a person of adult size is sitting inthe right front passenger seat, butthe off indicator is lit, it could bebecause that person is not sittingproperly in the seat. If this happens, use the following steps to allow the

system to detect that person andenable the right front passengerfrontal airbag:

1. Turn the vehicle off.

2. Remove any additional materialfrom the seat, such as blankets, cushions, seat covers, seatheaters, or seat massagers.

3. Place the seatback in the fullyupright position.

4. Have the person sit upright inthe seat, centered on the seatcushion, with legs comfortablyextended.

5. Restart the vehicle and have theperson remain in this position fortwo to three minutes after the onindicator is lit.

Additional Factors AffectingSystem Operation

Safety belts help keep thepassenger in position on the seatduring vehicle maneuvers andbraking, which helps the passengersensing system maintain thepassenger airbag status. See“Safety Belts” and “Child Restraints”in the Index for additionalinformation about the importance ofproper restraint use.

If the shoulder portion of the belt ispulled out all the way, the childrestraint locking feature will beengaged. This may unintentionallycause the passenger sensingsystem to turn the airbag off forsome adult‐size occupants. If thishappens, let the belt go back all theway and start again.

Page 58: Owner's Manuals – Passenger Air Bag Automatic On-Off

3-32 Seats and Restraints

A thick layer of additional material, such as a blanket or cushion,or aftermarket equipment such asseat covers, seat heaters, and seatmassagers, can affect how well thepassenger sensing systemoperates. We recommend that younot use seat covers or otheraftermarket equipment except whenapproved by GM for your specificvehicle. See Adding Equipment tothe Airbag-Equipped Vehicle onpage 3‑32 for more informationabout modifications that can affecthow the system operates.

The on indicator may be lit if anobject, such as a briefcase, handbag, grocery bag, laptop,or other electronic device, is put onan unoccupied seat. If this is notdesired, remove the object fromthe seat.

{ WARNING

Stowing of articles under thepassenger seat or between thepassenger seat cushion andseatback may interfere with theproper operation of the passengersensing system.

Servicing theAirbag-Equipped Vehicle

Airbags affect how the vehicleshould be serviced. There are partsof the airbag system in severalplaces around the vehicle. Yourdealer and the service manual haveinformation about servicing thevehicle and the airbag system. Topurchase a service manual, seeService Publications OrderingInformation on page 13‑17.

{ WARNING

For up to 10 seconds after thevehicle is turned off and thebattery is disconnected, an airbagcan still inflate during improperservice. You can be injured if youare close to an airbag when itinflates. Avoid yellow connectors. They are probably part of theairbag system. Be sure to followproper service procedures, andmake sure the person performingwork for you is qualified to do so.

Adding Equipment to theAirbag-Equipped Vehicle

Q: Is there anything I might addto or change about the vehiclethat could keep the airbagsfrom working properly?

PRECAUTIONS ON SUPPLEMENTALRESTRAINT SYSTEM

This Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) sec-tion contains important information concerningthe following systems:

● Driver and passenger supplemental front-impact air bag (NISSAN Advanced Air BagSystem)

● Front seat-mounted side-impact supple-mental air bag

● Roof-mounted curtain side-impact and roll-over supplemental air bag

● Seat belt with pretensioner

Roof-mounted curtain side-impact androllover supplemental air bag system: Thissystem can help cushion the impact force to thehead of occupants in front and rear outboardseating positions in certain side-impact or roll-over collisions. In a side impact, the curtain androllover air bags are designed to inflate on theside where the vehicle is impacted. In a rollover, both curtain and rollover air bags are designed toinflate and remain inflated for a short time.

These supplemental restraint systems are de-signed to supplement the crash protection pro-vided by the driver and front passenger seat beltsand are not a substitute for them. Seat beltsshould always be correctly worn and the occu-pant seated a suitable distance away from thesteering wheel, instrument panel and door finish-ers. See “Seat belts” earlier in this section forinstructions and precautions on seat belt usage.

The supplemental air bags operate onlywhen the ignition switch is placed in theON position.

After placing the ignition switch in the ONposition, the supplemental air bag warninglight illuminates. The supplemental air bagwarning light will turn off after about 7 sec-onds if the system is operational.

● The driver and front passenger seat beltbuckles are equipped with sensors thatdetect if the seat belts are fastened. TheAdvanced Air Bag System monitors theseverity of a collision and seat belt us-age then inflates the air bags asneeded. Failure to properly wear seatbelts can increase the risk or severity ofinjury in an accident.

● The front passenger seat is equippedwith an Occupant Classification Sensor(weight sensor) that turns the front pas-senger air bag OFF under some condi-tions. This sensor is only used in thisseat. Failure to be properly seated andwearing the seat belt can increase therisk or severity of injury in an accident.See “Front passenger air bag and sta-tus light” later in this section.

● Keep hands on the outside of the steer-ing wheel. Placing them inside thesteering wheel rim could increase therisk that they are injured when the frontair bag inflates.

Also the front passengerair bag status light may not illuminate.See “Child restraints”earlier in this sec-tion for information about installingand using child restraints.

● Confirm the operating condition withthe front passenger air bag status light.

● If you notice that the front passenger airbag status light is not operating as de-scribed later in this section, please takeyour vehicle to your NISSAN dealer tocheck the occupant classificationsystem.

● Until you have confirmed with yourdealer that your passenger seat occu-pant classification system is workingproperly, position the occupants in therear seating positions.

They may not inflate in certain frontal collisions.

Vehicle damage (or lack of it) is not always anindication of proper front air bag system opera-tion.

The NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System has dualstage inflators. It also monitors information fromthe crash zone sensor and the Air bag ControlUnit (ACU). Inflator operation is based on theseverity of a collision and seat belt usage for thedriver. For the front passenger, the occupantclassification sensors are also monitored. Basedon information from the sensors, only one front airbag may inflate in a crash, depending on thecrash severity. Additionally, the front passengerair bag may be automatically turned OFF undersome conditions, depending on the weight de-tected on the passenger seat and how the seatbelt is used. If the front passenger air bag is OFF,the passenger air bag status light will be illumi-nated (if the seat is unoccupied, the light will notbe illuminated, but the air bag will be off).

Safety—Seats, seat belts and supplemental restraint system 1-57

When a front air bag inflates, a fairly loud noisemay be heard, followed by the release of smoke. This smoke is not harmful and does not indicate afire. Care should be taken to not inhale it, as it maycause irritation and choking. Those with a historyof a breathing condition should get fresh airpromptly.

The front air bags operate only when theignition switch is placed in the ON position.

After placing the ignition switch in the ONposition, the supplemental air bag warninglight illuminates. The supplemental air bagwarning light will turn off after about 7 sec-onds if the system is operational.

The front passenger air bag status light islocated near the radio controls. After the ignitionswitch is placed in the 9ON9 position, the frontpassenger air bag status light on the instrumentpanel illuminates for about 7 seconds and thenturns off or remains illuminated depending on thefront passenger seat occupied status. The lightoperates as follows:

● Unoccupied passenger’s seat: The isOFF and the front passenger air bag is OFFand will not inflate in a crash.

● Passenger’s seat occupied by a small adult, child or child restraint as outlined in this

section: The illuminates to indicatethat the front passenger air bag is OFF andwill not inflate in a crash.

● Occupied passenger seat and the passen-ger meet the conditions outlined in this sec-

tion: The light is OFF to indicate thatthe front passenger air bag is operational.

Front passenger air bag

The front passenger air bag is designed to auto-matically turn OFF when the vehicle is operatedunder some conditions as described below inaccordance with U.S. regulations. If the frontpassenger air bag is OFF, it will not inflate in a

crash. The driver air bag and other air bags in yourvehicle are not part of this system.

The purpose of the regulation is to help reducethe risk of injury or death from an inflating air bagto certain front passenger seat occupants, suchas children, by requiring the air bag to be auto-matically turned OFF. Certain sensors are usedto meet the requirements.

One sensor used is the occupant classificationsensor (weight sensor). It is designed to detectan occupant and objects on the seat by weight. For example, if a child is in the front passengerseat, the Advanced Air Bag System is designedto turn the passenger air bag OFF in accordancewith the regulations. Also, if a child restraint of thetype specified in the regulations is on the seat, itsweight and the child’s weight can be detectedand cause the air bag to turn OFF.

Always be sure to be seated and

wearing the seat belt properly for the most effec-tive protection by the seat belt and supplementalair bag.

NISSAN recommends that pre-teens and chil-dren be properly restrained in a rear seat.NISSAN also recommends that appropriate childrestraints and booster seats be properly installedin a rear seat. If this is not possible, the occupantclassification sensor is designed to operate asdescribed above to turn the front passenger airbag OFF for specified child restraints as requiredby the regulations. Failing to properly securechild restraints and to use the ALR mode mayallow the restraint to tip or move in an accident orsudden stop. This can also result in the passen-ger air bag inflating in a crash instead of beingOFF. See “Child restraints” earlier in this sectionfor proper use and installation.

If the front passenger seat is not occupied, thepassenger air bag is designed not to inflate in acrash.

Safety—Seats, seat belts and supplemental restraint system 1-59

Make sure that the child restraint isinstalled properly, the seat belt is used properlyand the occupant is positioned properly.

However,

until you have confirmed with your dealer thatyour air bag is working properly, reposition theoccupant or child restraint in a rear seat.

If a malfunction occurs in the front passenger airbag system, the supplemental air bag warning

light , located in the meter and gauges areaof the instrument panel, will blink. Have the sys-tem checked by a NISSAN dealer.
