PREPARATION• Wear safety glasses provided with your unit wh le operat-

ing the chipper-shredder to prevent injury from _ny mate-rialwhich may be ejected out of the openings.

• Wear proper apparel. Avoid wearing loose fittin!l clothing.Wear gloves when handling material.

• HANDLE GASOLINE WITH CARE as it is an _xtremelyflammable fuel.

• Check the fuel before starting the engine. Do ilot fill thefuel tank indoors, while the engine is running, el while theengine is still hot. Turn the unit off and let the engine coolbefore refueling.

• Fuel your chipper-shredder in a clean arez.. Do notsmoke while refueling.

• Fuel tank cap must be secure at all times excE:pt duringrefueling.

• Avoid spilling gasoline or oil. Wipe the unit cle]n of anyspilled fuel or oil.

• Store fuel and oil in approved containers, away from heator open flame, and out of reach of children.

• This machine should be operated only upon a lew _1surface.• Assure that all screws, nuts and bolts and other fasteners

are properly secured.

OPERATION

• When feeding shreddable material into this e_luipment,be extremely careful that pieces of metal, rock_, bottles,cans or other foreign objects are not included. Personalinjury or damage to the machine could result.

• if the cutting mechanism strikes any foreign object or ifyour machine should start making an unusual noise orvibration, immediately stop the engine, disconnect thespark plug wire from the spark plug and move it awayfrom the spark plug. Allow the machine to stop and takethe following steps:Inspect for damage.Replace or repair any damaged parts.Check for any loose parts and tighten to assure contin-ued safe operation.

• The engine must be kept clean of debris and other accu-mulations.

• Do not allow an accumulation of processed material tobuild up in the discharge area as this will prevent properdischarge and can result in kick-back from feed opening.

• Never place your hands or any other part of your body orclothing inside the feeding chamber, discharge chute ornear any moving part while the engine is running.

• Keep all guards and deflectors in place and in good work-ing condition to assure continued safe operation.

• Always stand clear of the discharge area when operatingthis machine.

• Keep your face and body back from the feed opening toavoid accidental bounce back of any material.

• Do not over-reach. Keep proper balance and footing at alltimes.

• The engine governor settings on your machine must notbe altered, changed, or tampered with. The governorcontrols the maximum safe operating speeds and pro-tects the engine and all moving parts from damagecaused by overspeed.

• Do not transport machine while engine is running.• Do not operate engine if air cleaner or cover directly over

carburetor air intake is removed, except for adjustment.Removal of such parts could create a fire hazard.

MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE• When this equipment is stopped for servicing, inspection,

storage or to change an accessory, make sure the sparkplug wire is disconnected from the spark plug and movedaway from the spark plug. The machine should beallowed to cool down before making such inspection,adjustments, service, etc. Maintain your machine withcare and keep it clean for the best and continued safeoperation.

• Do not use flammable solutions to clean the air filter.• When not in use, your machine should be stored out of

the reach of children. Keep where gasoline fumes will notreach an open flame or spark. For long periods of stor-age, refer to the "Storage" section of this manual.

iMPORTANT: This unit is shipped WITHOUT GASO-LINE or OIL in the engine. After assembly, see opera-tion section of this manual for proper fuel and engineoil recommendations.

NOTE: To determine right and left hand sides of yourchipper-shredder, stand behind the unit with theengine the farthest away from you. See figure 6.

Your chipper-shredder has been completely assem-bled at the factory, except for the hopper assembly(hopper hood and upper leaf ramp section have beensub-assembled), upper guide assembly, chute deflec-tor and the catcher bag, The hardware pack safetyglasses and bottle of oil are also included in thecarton.

The hardware pack contains the parts shown in figure1 (shown full size).

,_ MAKE CERTAIN THE SPARK PLUGWIRE IS DISCONNECTED AND MOVEDAWAY FROM THE SPARK PLUGBEFORE ASSEMBLING THE CHIPPER-SHREDDER. REFER TO FIGURE 13,PAGE 10.

<'-ATTACHING THE CHUTE DEFLECTOR• Remove the hand knobs and cupped washers from

each side of the discharge opening on the left sideof the chipper-shredder.

• Remove hex lock nut, two spacers and hex boltusing two 7/16" wrenches from inside the hinge ontop of the housing assembly. Do not remove onespacer from the hex bolt.

• Place the chute deflector in position on the dis-charge opening. Insert hex bolt and spacer throughhinge on chute deflector and housing (spacer fitsinside of hinge). See figure 2.

• Place second spacer over hex bolt, inside otherpart of hinge. Secure with hex lock nut. Tightensecurely.

• Secure both sides of chute deflector to housingusing hand knobs and cupped washers (cupped sideof washers go against chute deflector).

_-ATTACHING THE UPPER GUIDE ASSEMBLYGrasp the upper guide assembly from the sides andsqueeze in and slide it over the inlet guide so theedges are under the stop washers. Adjust so theholes in the upper guide assembly are aligned withthe holes in the inlet guide. Insert the hex bolt, 8-3/8"long through the upper guide assembly and the inletguide. Secure with flat washer and lock nut.NOTE: Make certain the upper guide assembly canpivot by lifting it up until it locks in the raised position.If it does not pivot freely, loosen the hex lock nut aturn or two and test.

<-ATTACHING THE HOPPER ASSEMBLYYour chipper-shredder has been shipped with theupper leaf ramp section attached to the hopperassembly. See figure 4. Attach the hopper assemblyto the upper guide assembly as follows. Be certain toplace heads of all truss machine screws inside ofhopper assembly.• Remove one truss machine screw and nut from

each side of hopper assembly as shown in figure 4.Push hopper pivot door down inside lower partof hopper as you place hopper assembly (bothpieces) inside upper guide assembly. Replacetruss screws and nuts just removed, using the holeshown in figure 4, one on each side. Tighten fingertight only.

NOTE: You may have to squeeze in the sides of thehopper to start the screws.NOTE: If you have difficulty aligning the hole, loosenthe two screws on the upper end of the hopperassembly.• Place the six truss machine screws and nuts found

in hardware pack in the remaining holes of hopperassembly, alternating sides of the unit and tighten-ing finger tight only.

• After assembling all eight screws, tighten themsecurely.

<-ATTACHING THE CATCHER BAGYour chipper-shredder is equipped with a catcher bagto catch the shredded material.

• To attachthe bag,placethe openingOfthe bagoverthechutedeflectorso it completelycoversthechuteopening.Depressthe plungeron the draw-string,andpullon thedrawstringuntil thebag is

tightaroundthechuteopening.Releaseplungertolockit intoposition.Seefigure5.

TIRESRecommended tire pressure is 24 p.s.i.

BEFORE USING YOUR CHIPPER-SHREDDER, AGAIN REFER TO THE "SAFETY RULES" AS SHOWN ONPAGE 2 OF THIS MANUAL. ALWAYS BE CAREFUL.

The operation of any chipper-shredder can result in foreign objects being thrown into the eyes, which canresult in severe eye damage. Always wear the safety glasses provided with the chipper-shredder or eyeshields before chipping or shredding, or while performing any adjustments or repairs. We recommendWide Vision Safety Mask for over spectacles or standard glasses available at Sears Retail or CatalogStores.

• Leaves and small twigs can be raked into thehopper assembly when the hopper assembly islowered to the ground. See figure 8. Small branch-es up to 1/2" diameter (recommended) or 1"diameter (maximum) can also be fed into thehopper assembly in this position. See figure 9.

The chipper-shredder is designed for three ,]ifferentmethods of operation.

• Leaves and small branches up to 1/2" d ameter(recommended) or 1" diameter (maximum) can befed into the hopper assembly when it i_; in theraised position. See figure 7. If it become_ neces-sary to push material into the chipper-sl" redder,use a small diameter stick--NOT YOUR HANDS.

The stick should be small enough that it will beground up if gets into the impeller assembly

• To lower the hopper assembly, use one hand tograsp the handle at the top of the hopper assemblyand lift slightly. Pull up on the release bar, andlower the hopper assembly to the ground. Releasethe bar. See figure 10.

IMPORTANT: There is a flail screen located insidethe housing in the discharge area. If the flail screenbecomes clogged, remove and clean as instructed inthe Service and Adjustments section. For best per-formance, it is important to keep the shredding bladeand the chipper blades sharp. If the composition ofthe material being discharged changes (becomesstringy, etc.) or if the rate at which the material is dis-charged slows down considerably, it is likely that theshredding blade and/or chipper blades are dull andneed to be replaced. Refer to Service andAdjustments section.

NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils (5W30, 10W30,etc.) improve starting in cold weather, these multi-viscosity oils will result in increased oil consumptionwhen used above 32°F. Check your oil level more fre-quently to avoid possible engine damage fromrunning low on oil.• Fill engine with oil as follows. Remove oil fill dip-

stick. See figure 12. With chipper-shredder level,use a funnel to fill engine with oil to FULL mark ondipstick. Capacity is approximately 1-1/4 pints (20oz.). Be careful not to overfill. Tilt chipper-shreddertoward the left (from behind the hopper), then re-level. Check oil level. Refill to FULL mark on dip-stick if necessary. Replace dipstick and tighten.

lon of clean, fresh, lead-free grade automotivegasoline. DO NOT use Ethyl or high octane gaso-line. Be certain container is clean and free from

rust or foreign particles. Never use gasoline thatmay be stale from long periods of storage in thecontainer. Replace fuel cap.

WARNING: DO NOT FILL CLOSER THAN1/2 INCH OF TOP OF FUEL TANK TOPREVENT SPILLS AND TO ALLOW FORFUEL EXPANSION. IF GASOLINE ISACCIDENTLY SPILLED, MOVE CHIPPER-SHREDDER AWAY FROM AREA OFSPILL. AVOID CREATING ANY SOURCEOF IGNITION UNTIL GASOLINE VAPORSHAVE DISAPPEARED.

Check the fuel level periodically to avoid running outof gasoline while operating the chipper-shredder. If

the unit runs out of gas as it is shredding or chipping,it may be necessary to unclog the unit before it can berestarted. Refer to "Removing the Flail Sc'een" inSERVICE AND ADJUSTMENT section.

out slowly until engine reaches start of compres-sion cycle (rope will pull slightly harder at thispoint). Let the rope rewind slowly.

NOTE: A noise will be heard when finding the start ofthe compression cycle. This noise is caused by theflails and fingers which are part of the shredding mech-anism falling into place, and should be expected. Inaddition, the flails and fingers will be noisy after theengine is started, until the impeller reaches full speed.• Pull rope with a rapid, continuous, full arm stroke.

Keep a firm grip on start handle. Let rope rewindslowly. Do not let starter handle snap back againststarter.

NOTE: To prevent the unit from sliding, place yourfoot against the tire.• Repeat preceding two instructions until engine

CHIPPER-SHREDDERLUBRICATIONLubricate the pivot points on the release bar, hopperassembly, chute deflector and chipper chute once aseason using a light oil.CLEANING• The chipper-shredder may be cleaned by running

water from a hose through the hopper assemblyand chipper chute with the engine running. Allowthe chipper-shredder to dry thoroughly.

• Wash the bag periodically with water. Allow to drythoroughly in the shade. Do not use heat.

ENGINEENGINE OILOnly use high quality detergent oil rated with APIservice classification SF, SG or SH. Select the oil'sviscosity grade according to your expected operatingtemperature.

NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils (SE30, 10W30,etc.) improve starting in cold weather, these multi- vis-cosity oils will result in increased oil consumptionwhen used above 32°F. Check your oil level more fre-quently to avoid possible engine damage from run-ning low on oil.

Your four-cycle engine will normally consume someoil--therefore, check engine oil level regularly approx-imately every five hours of operation and before eachusage. Stop engine and wait several minutes beforechecking oil level. With engine level, the oil must be toFULL mark on dipstick (refer to figure 12). Changeengine oil after the first five hours of operation, andevery twenty-five hours thereafter.

To Drain Oil:

• Drain oil while engine is warm.

a. Remove oil drain plug. Refer to figure 11. Catchoil in a suitable container.

b. When engine is drained of all oil, replace drainplug securely.

• Refill with fresh oil. Refer to GAS AND OIL FILL-UP section.

• Replace dipstick.

AIR CLEANER

The air cleaner prevents damaging dirt, dust, etc.,from entering the carburetor and being forced into theengine and is important to engine life _nd per-formance.

Never run your engine without air cleaner com-pletely assembled.To Service Air Cleaner:

Service pre-cleaner after every 25 hours of use, or atleast once a season. Service cartridge every 130 hoursof use, or at least once a season. Service pn;-cleanerand cartridge more often under dusty conditions.

• Loosen air cleaner cover screws. Remo-e coverand air cleaner assembly from base. See fi jure 15.

• Remove air cleaner assembly from inside coverand disassemble.

• To service foam pre-cleaner: Remove pre.cleaner.Wash in liquid detergent and water. Squee_,e dry ina clean cloth. Saturate in engine oil. Squeeze in aclean, absorbent cloth to remove all excess oil. Ifpre-cleaner is very dirty, replace it.

• To service cartridge: Clean by tapping gently on aflat surface. If very dirty, replace. Do not oil cartridge.

NOTE: Do not use petroleum solvents (e.g. k_;rosene)or pressurized air to clean cartridge. They wll causecartridge to deteriorate.

• Reassemble retainer on pre-cleaner and _:artridge(screen side of pre-cleaner toward c_lrtridgepleats). Place assembly into cover.

• Insert tabs on cover into slots in base and tightencover screws securely.

CLEAN ENGINE

Clean engine periodically. Remove dirt and debriswith a cloth or brush. Cleaning with a forceful spray ofwater is not recommended as water could contami-nate the fuel system.

Yearly or every 25 hours, whichever occurs first,remove the blower housing and clean the areasshown in figure 17 to avoid overspeeding, overheatingand engine damage. Clean more often if necessary.

SPARK PLUG

The spark plug should be cleaned and the gap resetto .030" at least once a season or every 50 hours ofoperation. See figure 18. Spark plug replacement isrecommended at the start of each season. Refer toengine parts list for correct spark plug type.

NOTE: Do not sandblast spark plug. Spark plugshould be cleaned by scraping or wire brushing andwashing with a commercial solvent.

STORAGE

Prepare your chipper-shredder for storage at the endof the season or if the unit will not be used for 30 daysor more.

NOTE: A yearly check-up by your local Sears ServiceCenter is a good way to make certain your chipper-shredder will provide maximum performance for thenext season.

CHIPPER-SHREDDER• Clean the chipper-shredder thoroughly.

• Wipe unit with an oiled rag to prevent rust (use alight oil or silicone).

ENGINEIMPORTANT: IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENTGUM DEPOSITS FROM FORMING IN ESSENTIALFUEL SYSTEM PARTS SUCH AS CARBURETOR,FUEL FILTER, FUEL HOSE, OR TANK DURINGSTORAGE. ALSO, EXPERIENCE INDICATES THATALCOHOL BLENDED FUELS (CALLED GASOHOLOR USING ETHANOL OR METHANOL) CANATTRACT MOISTURE WHICH LEADS TO SEPARA-TION AND FORMATION OF ACIDS DURING STOR-AGE. ACIDIC GAS CAN DAMAGE THE FUEL SYS-TEM OF AN ENGINE WHILE IN STORAGE.

• Drain the fuel tank.

• Start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines andcarburetor are empty.

• Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products inthe fuel tank or permanent damage may occur.

• Use fresh fuel next season.

NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative inminimizing the formation of fuel gum deposits duringstorage. Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or stor-age container. Always follow the mix ratio found onstabilizer container. Run engine at least 10 minutesafter adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reachthe carburetor. Do not drain the gas tank and carbure-tor if using fuel stabilizer.• Drain all the oil from the crankcase (this should be

done after the engine has been operated and is stillwarm) and refill the crankcase with fresh oil.

• If you have drained the fuel tank, protect the insideof the engine as follows. Remove spark plug, pourapproximately 1/2 ounce (approximately one table-spoon) of engine oil into cylinder and crank slowlyto distribute oil. Replace spark plug.

OTHER• Do not store gasoline from one season to another.

• Replace your gasoline can if your can starts to rust.Rust and/or dirt inyour gasoline will cause problems.

• Store unit in a clean, dry area. Do not store next tocorrosive materials, such as fertilizer.

NOTE: If storing in an unventilated or metal storageshed, be certain to rustproof the equipment by coatingwith a light oil or silicone.

SERVICE & ADJUSTMENT

WARNING: ALWAYS STOP ENGINE AND

DISCONNECT SPARK PLUG WIRE ANDMOVE IT AWAY FROM SPARK PLUGBEFORE PERFORMING ANY ADJUST-MENTS OR REPAIRS.

REMOVING THE FLAIL SCREENIf the discharge area becomes clogged, remove theflail screen and clean area as follows.

• Stop the engine, make certain the chipper-shredderhas come to a complete stop and disconnect sparkplug wire from the spark plug before unclogging thechute.

Loosen the two hand knobs on each side of thechute deflector. Lift the chute deflector up, and tie itout of the way.

• Remove two hairpin clips from the clevis pins whichextend through the housing. Remove the clevispins. Lift the flail screen from inside the housing.See figure 19.

• Clean the screen by scraping or washing withwater. Reinstall the screen.

NOTE: Be certain to reassemble the flail screen withthe curved side down as shown in figure 19.

• Disconnect spark plug wire and move it away fromspark plug.

• Remove the flail screen as instructed in _revioussection.

• Remove the chipper chute by removing three hexnuts and washers. A 1/2" wrench is requi_'ed. Seefigure 19.

NOTE: When reassembling, the cupped washer goeson the bottom of the chipper chute with the cuppedside against the chute.

• Rotate the impeller assembly by hand Lntil youlocate one of the chipper blades in the chipperchute opening. Remove the blade, using a 3/16"allen wrench on the outside of the blade ._nd 1/2"wrench on the impeller assembly (inside the hous-ing). See figure 20.

• Remove the other blade in the same manm;r.

Replace or sharpen blades. If sharpening, make cer-tain to remove an equal amount from each blade.Reassemble in reverse order.

Make certain blades are reassembled with the sharpedge facing the direction shown in figure 19 (sharpedge is assembled toward the slotted opening in theimpeller assembly). Torque bolts and nuts to 250-350inch pounds.

SHREDDING BLADE

The shredding blade may be removed for sharpeningor replacement as follows.

• Disconnect spark plug wire and move it away fromspark plug.

• Lower the hopper assembly. Block up the housing.See figure 21.

• Remove the six hex lock nuts and lock washersfrom the housing weld bolts using a 1/2" wrench.Separate the chipper-shredder into two halves.

• Remove the back-up plate.

NOTE: When reassembling, make certain the open-ing on the back-up plate is toward the bottom of theunit. The back-up plate may be reversed to provide anew cutting edge.

• Loosen the two hand knobs and cupped washerswhich secure the chute deflector, and raise thechute deflector.

• Insert a 1/2" or 3/4" diameter pipe through the flailscreen into the impeller to keep it from turning, orremove the flail screen and insert a piece of wood(2 x 4) into the chute opening.

• Remove the two outside screws on the blade,using a 3/16" allen wrench and a 1/2" wrench.

• Remove the blade by removing the center bolt, lockwasher and flat washer.

NOTE: Use caution when removing the blade to avoidcontacting the weld bolts on the housing.

• When sharpening the blade, follow the originalangle of grind as a guide. It is extremely importantthat each cutting edge receives an equal amount ofgrinding to prevent an unbalanced blade. An unbal-anced blade will cause excessive vibration whenrotating at high speeds and may cause damage tothe unit.

• The blade can be tested for balance by balancing iton a round shaft screwdriver or nail. Remove metalfrom the heavy side until it is balanced evenly. Seefigure 22.

FLAILSThe flails, located inside the housing, may bereversed when they become dull. It is suggested thatthis procedure be performed by your nearest SearsService Department.

Minor carburetor adjustment may be required to com-pensate for differences in fuel, temperature, altitudeor load.

NOTE: A DIRTY AIR CLEANER WILL CAUSEENGINE TO RUN ROUGH. BE CERTAIN AIRCLEANER IS CLEAN AND ATTACHED TO THECARBURETOR BEFORE ADJUSTING CARBURE-TOR. DO NOT MAKE UNNECESSARY ADJUST-MENTS. FACTORY SETTINGS ARE SATISFACTO-RY FOR MOST APPLICATIONS AND CONDITIONS.

Never attempt to change maximum engine speed. It ispre-set at the factory and should be changed only bya qualified service technician who has the necessaryequipment.

The carburetor may need re-adjusting if engine lackspower or does not idle properly. If adjustments areneeded, proceed as follows.• Close idle mixture valve (see figure 24) clockwise

( f'_ ) finger tight only. Forcing may cause damage.Then open 1-1/2 turns counterclockwise ( ,,_ ).

• Start engine and allow to warm for five minutes.• Move throttle control lever to IDLE position.• Rotate throttle counterclockwise (,,_) and hold

against idle speed adjusting screw. Turn idle speedadjusting screw until engine is running at 1750RPM.

• Turn idle mixture valve clockwise (¢-_) (lean mix-ture) until engine JUST starts to slow. Then turn itcounterclockwise (,,--,) (rich mixture) until enginestarts to run unevenly. Set at midpoint between richand lean mixture.

• Recheck idle RPM and readjust if necessary.• Move throttle control lever to FAST position.

Engine should accelerate without hesitation orsputtering. If it does not, carburetor should be read-justed, usually to a slightly richer mixture.
