OPERATION AND ADJUSTMENT

APPLYING SILICONE LUBRICANT

To reduce the fdction of the walking belt and minimizewear, a non-oil-, non-petroleum-base silicone lubri-cant must be applied to the walking platform beforethe treadmill is used. Failure to apply lubricantwillreduce treadmill performance. WITH THE POWER

• CORD UNPLUGGED, lift each side of the walking beltand spray lubricant generously onto the indicatedarea. Reapply lubricant after every ten hours of use,or whenever performance decreases. Lubricant isavailable at most hardware and automotive stores.Uni.SportTM silicone spray is recommended.

and has a grounding PlUg that looks like the p!ugillus-trated in Drawing 1.

A temporary adapter that looks like the adapter illus-trated in Drawing 2 may be used to connect this plugto a 2-pole receptacle as shown in Drawing 2 if aproperly grounded outlet is not available. The tempo-rary adapter should be used only until a properlygrounded outlet (Drawing 1) can be installed by aqualified electrician. The green colored .rigidear, lug,or the like extending from the adapter must be con-nected to a permanent ground such as a properlygrounded outlet box cover. Whenever the adapter isused it must be held in place by a metal screw.

Some 2-pole receptacle outlet box covers are notgrounded. Contact a qualified electrician to deter-mine if the outlet box cover Is grounded beforeusing an adapter.

To create a program, first pressthe MODE button repeatedly to select the WALKmode or the RUN mode. An indicator will light to showwhich modeyou have selected. If the WALK mode isselected, the speed range of the walking belt will beabout 1 to 4 miles per hour during the program; if theRUN mode is selected, the speed range of the walk-ing belt will be about 2 to 8 miles per hour.

Each program is divided into eight equal time periods, called segments. The speed of the walking belt willchange automatically at the beginning of each seg-ment. A speed setting should now be programmed foreach of the eight segments, using the eight program-mable speed controls on the left side of the console. The control on the far left is for the first segment, andthe control on the dght is for the eighth segment.Move the controls up or down to program the desiredspeed settings. The speed will thenincrease during the secorid, third and fodrth seg-ments, and gradually decrease during the sixth, sev-enth and eighth segments. An infinite vadety ofspeed settings can be programmed.

Next, press the TIME SET buttons to set the length•of time you want the program to last. Each time oneof the buttons is pressed, the length of time, shown

CONDITIONING GUIDELINES

The following guidelines will help you to plan yourexercise program. Remember that proper nutritionandadequate rest are essential for successful results.

WARNING: Before beginning this or

any exercise program, consult your physician. Thisis especially Important for Individuals over the ageof 35 or !ndlviduals with pre_axisting health prob-lems.

EXERCISE INTENSITY

To maximize the benefits of exercising, it is importantto exercise with the proper Intensity. The proper inten-sity can be found by usingyour heart rate as a guide. For effective aerobic exercise, your heart rate shouldbe maintained at a level between 70% and 85% ofyour maximum heart rate as you exercise. This isknown as your trainingzone. You can find your trainingzone in the table below. Training zones are listed forboth unconditionedand conditioned persons accordingto age.

• During thefirst feW months of your exercise program,•keep your heart rate near the low end of Yourtrainingzone as you exercisel After a few months, your heartrate can be increased gradually until it is near the mid-dle of your training zone as you exercise.

To measure

your heart rate, stop exercisingand place twofingerson yourwrist asshown. Take asix-secondheartbeatcount, andmultiplytheresult by 10 tofind your heart rate. For example, if your six-secondheartbeat count is 14, your heart rate is 140 beats perminute. (A six:second count is used because yourheart rate will drop rapidly when you stop exercising.)Adjust the intensity of your exercise until your heartrate is at the proper level.

WORKOUT GUIDEUNES

Each workout should consist of three basic pads: awarm-up, 20 to 30 minutes of training zone exercise, and a cool-down. Warming up prepares the body forexercise by Increasing circulation, delivering more oxy-gen to the muscles and raising the body temperature.Begin each workout with 5 to 10 minutes of stretchingand light exercise to warm up. Then, iP_creasetheIntensityof your exercise to raise your heart rate toyour training zone for 20 to 30 minutes. Breathe regu-larly and deeply as you exercise--never hold yourbreath. Finish each workout with 5 to 10 minutes ofstretchingto cool down. This will increase the flexibilityof th_ muscles, and reduce soreness and other post-exercise problems.

To maintain or improve your condition, complete threeworkouts each week, with at least one day of restbetween workouts. After a few months of regular exer-cise, you may complete up to five workouts each week,if desired. The key to success is CONSISTENCY.
