INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

1. Please read this owner’s manualcarefully before installing this ampli-fier.

2. Disconnect the battery groundterminal prior to making any elec-trical connections.

3. Check for any hazards or obstruc-tions such as gas tanks, fuel orbrake lines, and wiring harnessesbefore mounting the amplifier.

4. Pick a mounting location that willprovide adequate access and venti-lation and protect the amplifierfrom heat, moisture, and dirt.

5. Avoid sharp metal areas whenrouting cables to the amplifier, andrun RCA cables away from thepower cables and other potentiallynoisy car harnesses.

6. The amplifier should be groundedwith a short, heavy gauge wireconnected directly to the car at abare metal surface, preferablyscraped body sheet metal. Do notuse factory ground locations, seatbolts, or brackets that are spotwelded.

7. Always fuse your power connectionwithin 8 to 10 inches of the batteryterminal. Use a fuse or circuitbreaker rated slightly more than theon-board fuse(s) of theamplifier(s). The gauge of powerwire used should take into accountthe total current draw of thesystem, and the length of wireused. IASCA and other auto soundcompetition organizations havecharts available for this; you canalso find a chart in the MECP study

PPrriioorr ttoo sseerrvviicciinngg your vehicle ensurethat the alarm system is ddiissaarrmmeedd. Dueto the amplifier’s anti-theft feature (ifenabled), amplifier operation is disabledwhen the main power to the amplifier isremoved while the alarm is armed. The

amplifier operation must then be reset.If the alarm is replaced with anotherESP2 alarm system, ensure that theamplifier goes through a learn routine(using the Bitwriter®) prior to reen-abling the anti-theft feature.

guide. Minimum wire gauge recom-mendations for the individual ampli-fiers are listed on the specificationpage. Always use the same gaugewire for the amplifier ground thatyou use for the power wire. Be sureto examine the battery groundcable of the vehicle, and if neces-sary, upgrade it by adding an addi-tional ground wire that is the samegauge as the amplifier’s powerwire. Remember, the amplifier canonly deliver its rated output when itis not current limited by the powerand ground supply wires.

8. This amplifier is designed to drive aspeaker load that measures from 1to 4 ohms. Keep in mind that heatis the long-term enemy of automo-tive electronics and the lower yourspeaker load, the more heat isgenerated. For low impedancespeaker applications or restricted

ventilation installations, an externalcooling fan may be advisable.

9. Battery and ground connections tothe vehicle should be made withcrimped ring terminals of the appro-priate size (surface area is whatcounts); soldering the terminalsafter crimping is also recom-mended.

10. Due to the high-frequency MOSFETswitching power supply, filtering thepower cable is not generallyrequired (remember that the ampcan’t deliver full output if the powersupply is restricted). Propergrounding of the signal source ismandatory for the amplifier toreach its performance peak. If theRCA inputs are not groundedadequately via the signal source,electrical noise from the vehiclemay be picked up in the system.

4. GGaaiinn CCoonnttrrooll -- Controls the ampli-fier’s sensitivity and is used tomatch the input level of the ampli-fier to the output level of the signalsource.

5. SSuubbssoonniicc SSwwiittcchh -- The subsonic filterattenuates frequencies below 30Hzby 24dB per octave.

6. BBaassss EEQQ SSwwiittcchh -- Adds 8dB of bassboost to the subwoofer whenselected.

7. RReemmoottee - Controls the subwooferamplifier gain, from a remote loca-

tion for ease of adjustment duringlistening.

WWaarrnniinngg:: DO NOT connect a level control knob from othermanufacturers to the Remote Sub Level Control ofany Directed amplifier. Even though the connectorsfit properly, the control knob and connector pinpositions may be different and the amplifier will bedamaged.

8. LLPPFF CCoonnttrrooll -- Controls low pass filtercutoff from 30Hz to 250Hz.

9. PPhhaassee SSwwiittcchh -- 0° or 180° selec-table for switching the phase outputto the woofer.

10. LLEEDD//FFAANN CCoonnnneeccttoorr -- Allows connec-tion of an ooppttiioonnaall LED light bar orooppttiioonnaall cooling fan for the amplifier.

11. SSttaattuuss LLEEDD - Will illuminate GREENto indicate the amplifier is on andoperating normally, and will be illu-minated RED if the amplifier shutsdown due to short circuit, DC offset,or overheating detected by on-board protection circuitry.

12. EESSPP®® PPoorrtt -- connection port forBitwriter® or ESP2 security system.

13. EESSPP®® SSttaattuuss LLEEDD -- indicates ESP®

functionality and is used to diagnoseESP® features.

1. FFuusseess -- These fuses protect theamplifier against internal electricaldamage and are meant to protectthe amplifier only. All other powerconnections should be fused at thesource.

The D1200 uses 2-30A fuses, andthe D2400 uses 3-40A fuses.

2. ((++)) 1122 VVoolltt PPoowweerr - Connect thisterminal through a FUSE or CIRCUITBREAKER to the positive terminal ofthe vehicle battery or the positiveterminal of an isolated audiosystem battery.

WWAARRNNIINNGG:: Always protect this power wire by installing a fuseor circuit breaker of the appropriate size within12 inches of the battery terminal connection.

2. RReemmoottee TTuurrnn OOnn - This terminal turnson the amplifier when (+) 12 volt isapplied to it. Connect it to the remoteturn on lead of the head unit or signalsource.

2. GGrroouunndd -- Connect this terminaldirectly to the sheet metal chassis

of the vehicle, using the shortestwire necessary to make thisconnection. Always use wire of thesame gauge or larger than the (+)12 volt power wire. The chassisconnection point should be scrapedfree of paint and dirt. Use onlyquality crimped and/or solderedconnectors at both ends of thiswire. DO NOT connect this terminaldirectly to the vehicle batteryground terminal or any otherfactory ground points.

3. SSppeeaakkeerr TTeerrmmiinnaallss - Connectsubwoofers to these terminals.(Refer to the Speaker WiringDiagrams section of this guide.)

ESP®® FEATURES AND CONTROLS

These amplifiers incorporate an on-boardDirected ESP® Engine. In addition toallowing menu-driven parameter adjust-ment*, operate with security productsfrom Directed Electronics to incorporateadvanced ESP2 features. Your dealercan use a Bitwriter® with Firmwareversion 2.0 or later to access theseparameters.

** NNoottee:: The ESP® features areobtained by using Bitwriter® and a3 pin ESP® cable. While aBitwriter® can only talk to oneESP®/ESP2 device at a time,multiple amplifiers can be set torespond to Arm/Disarm commands.

Simply repeat the TX ID Learnprocedure for each amplifier. Whencompleted use a Y-cable to connectthe Alarm signals to both ampli-fiers.

NNoottee:: Prior to using the anti-theft orvalet features it is recommendedthat the alarm be installed and itsfunctionality verified. Please consultthe install or operations guide forthe appropriate alarm.

For the Bitwriter® to Amp connection,the cable must have the same colorsequence at both ends of the cable. Forthe Alarm to Amplifier, the Transmit andReceive wires must cross from one end

to the other.

Bitwriter® commands can control para-meters such as Turn on Delay, FanControl, Input Gain adjustment, and alsoplace the amplifier into a monitoringstate for commands from an ESP2equipped alarm.

1. TTuurrnn--OOnn DDeellaayy -- 0.75, 1.00, 1.25,1.75, 2.25, 2.75, or 3.25seconds. 1.75 seconds is thefactory default setting.

2. FFaann CCoonnttrrooll -- AAUUTTOO -- The fan willautomatically turn on when theinternal temperature exceedsapproximately 40 deg C. The ONoption causes the fan to operatewhenever the Amplifier is on. Usethe ON option if you are using theexternal FAN port to drive optionalLED tubes. In the OFF mode theexternal FAN port is disabled.

3. SSeerrvviiccee CCooddee DDiissppllaayy -- The DirectedESP® Engine stores up to sevenprevious faults for later replay. TheService Code Display allows theinstaller to step through the faulthistory.

-- OOFFFF -- In the OFF position, theamplifier operates normally.

-- FFLLAASSHH CCOODDEE OONN LLEEDD -- the lastrecorded fault is "replayed" on theESP® Indicator LED. If the unit hasnever recorded a fault, the ESP®

Status indicator will not flash.

-- RREESSEERRVVEEDD -- no function, reservedfor future use.

-- CCLLEEAARR LLAASSTT FFAAUULLTT -- Clears the lastfault. Note that this allows you tosee previous faults prior by back-stepping one at a time through thefault history.

4. IInnppuutt GGaaiinn RRaannggee -- The sensitivityon the gain control can be limitedto specific ranges. The DEFAULTposition allows adjustment over thefull range of amplifier sensitivities.There are 4 other ranges 0.5-1.0V,1.0V-2.0V, 2.0-4.0V, 4.0-8.0V.

5. IInnppuutt GGaaiinn AAddjjuussttmmeenntt -- In the LOCKposition, the gain range and gaincontrol can be locked out to preventaccidental mis-adjustment. TheDefault mode is UNLOCKED.

6. VVaalleett -- Selecting ENABLE allows theamplifier to monitor valet signalsfrom the alarm system. The ampli-fier will not power up once remotepower is removed when the Valetmonitoring mode is ENABLED andthe alarm system has been set intoValet mode.

NNoottee:: To make use of the Anti-theftor Valet features, the amplifier must"learn" which transmitters are asso-ciated with the currently used alarmsystem. See item 8 below.

If selected while the remote poweris on, the amplifier will continueplaying until the remote power isturned off.

To Clear Valet Mode, Disable Valetmode on the alarm, then cycle theremote power line off then onagain. The amplifier will power upnormally after the Turn On Delaytime has expired.

7. AAnnttii--tthheefftt -- Selecting ON, allows theamplifier to monitor Arm andDisarm signals from the alarm,rendering the amp in-operable ifstolen. When OFF, these signals areignored. OFF is the factory defaultsetting.

When main power is removed whilethe unit is armed, the unit is placedinto a "stolen state". The ESP®

Status indicator will blink rapidly,and the amplifier will not continueits power up sequence. Also whenthere is currently an ARM signalactive on the bus, the amplifiercannot be written to by theBitwriter®.

To reactivate the amplifier, connectthe alarm that was used to arm theamplifier, and press the disarmbutton. Ensure the remote line isoff(turn it off if this is not thecase), and then turn the amplifieron. The amplifier should power up

normally after the Turn On Delayexpires.

Default is Light On, W/O Service Code

The amplifier contains the ability tocontrol the lights on top of the unitbehind the logo badge. In additionto custom tailoring many otherfeatures, your Directed Dealer canuse a Bitwriter® (V2.0 or later) tosetup the top light so that it iseither on or off when the amplifieris on or off. In addition, the toplight can indicate when the ampli-fier is in any of the fault shutdownmodes, or can display the servicecode when this is being accessed.

i. This option has the top light litwhen the unit is on(remote lineon), and indicates service codesand faults on the top light.

ii. This option has the top light unlitwhen the unit is on, and doesn’tindicate service codes or faults onthe top light.

iii. This option has the top light lit,but does not indicate service codesor faults on the top light.

iv. This option has the top light

unlit, but still indicates servicecodes or faults using the top light.

9. LLeeaarrnn TTXX IIDDss

DDeeffaauulltt OOffff.. Before the unit willrespond to Arm/Disarm/ValetCommands from the alarm system,it needs to establish communica-tions with this alarm system. This isestablished using the learn routineprocedure described below. Oncethis procedure is performed, theunit will store this informationpermanently in memory. The proce-dure only needs to be repeated ifthe alarm unit is replaced or all thetransmitters in an alarm system arereplaced.

10. MMaajjoorr VVeerrssiioonn NNuummbbeerr:: This numberwill allow verification of thefirmware installed in the amplifier.This will be useful informationshould your amplifier ever needservice.

11. MMiinnoorr VVeerrssiioonn NNuummbbeerr:: This numberreferences the minor version of youramplifier firmware.

TToo ppeerrffoorrmm aa ttrraannssmmiitttteerr ""lleeaarrnn""::

1. Connect Bitwriter® to amplifier.Press READ on the Bitwriter®.

2. Press the up arrow 3 times, or thedown arrow 8Light On, W/OService Code times to reach theLearn TX IDs menu. Press 'Select'

until the ON appears.

3. Press the write key twice. The ESP®

status indicator should beginblinking.

NNoottee:: The following should beaccomplished within 20 seconds orthe learn session will time out. Ifthis occurs, the LED will stopblinking. Reconnect the Bitwriter®

and press WRITE twice to re-enterthe TX ID Learn mode.

4. Disconnect the Bitwriter® andconnect the Amp to the alarmcable.

5. Press ARM on any transmitterattached to the alarm system. TheLED should go on if the amplifierwas on prior to TX ID or go out ifthe amplifier is off.

NNoottee:: When the amplifier receivesESP® bus activity(typically eitherarm or disarm signals, it will blinkto indicate Arm or Disarmcommands. This allows the installerto verify that the proper cable is inuse and that the transmitters havebeen properly programmed. Theunit must still be programmed torespond to Valet and Armcommands with a Bitwriter® for theAnti-theft/Valet modes to lock outunauthorized operation.

The ESP® Status indicator flashes toindicate the current operationalmode. This can be used in conjunc-

tion with the Power LED to helpdetermine the source of theproblem.

NNoottee: Remember that the Directed ESP® Engine incorporates a digital gain control witha finite number of adjustment steps (32). A very small adjustment may not causeany audible changes in output. In addition the range selected may further restrict theadjustment. Extremely quick, large changes may result in audible artifacts, particu-larly on low frequency material as the gain is changing more rapidly than the sourceelectrical wave.

NNOOTTEE:: The dual + and -- sub-out terminals of the D600/D800/D1200/D2400 are paralleled internally and the combined loadimpedance should be taken into consideration when connecting multiple subwoofers.

NNNN OOTTEEOOTTEE: Remember that the Directed ESP® amplifiers use adigital gain control with a finite number of adjust-ment steps. A very small adjustment may not causeany audible change in level.

The Directed D1200/D2400 subwooferamplifiers have the capability ofconnecting two or more amplifiers of thesame power rating together in amaster/slave combination for increasedpower with accurate level matching. Theyare the Parallel Synced Gain and ExternalSynced Bridged combinations.

WWAARRNNIINNGG:: DO NOT attempt to combine amplifiers of differentpower ratings. These amplifier combinations workcorrectly only if the Master and Slave amplifiers areidentical models.

Parallel Synced GainIn this master/slave combination themaster amplifier pre-amp controls remainactive and the slave amplifier pre-amp isbypassed. This allows the master ampli-fier to control gain, filter, and sub-levelon both amplifiers.

This combination allows the amplifiers todrive their own separate subwoofer(s)while being synced together via an in-phase audio pre-amp signal from themaster amplifier. Wiring connections tothe amplifier subwoofer outputs in thiscombination should be standard in-phaseconfigurations, creating a parallelspeaker connection. (Refer to ParallelSynced Gain section of this guide foramplifier and speaker connection

diagrams.)

NNOOTTEE:: One master amplifier can control up to three slaveamplifiers in this combination. Multiple identicalmaster/slave combinations can be added to anygiven system.

External Synced BridgedIn this master/slave combination themaster amplifier pre-amp controls remainactive and the slave amplifier pre-amp isbypassed. This allows the master amplifierto control gain, filter, and sub-level on bothamplifiers. This combination allows theamplifiers to drive common subwooferloads while being synced together via anout-of-phase audio pre-amp signal from themaster amplifier. In this subwoofer wiringconfiguration the master amplifier sends thepositive signal to the subwoofer while theslave amplifier sends the negative signal,making an externally bridged speakerconnection. (Refer to External SyncedBridged section of this guide for amplifierand speaker connection diagrams.)

NNOOTTEE:: Amplifiers in this combination can only be connectedin matched pairs. Multiple matched pairs may beadded to drive separate subwoofer loads in a givensystem.

Combined Amplifiers Gainand Filter Settings

6. SSuubbwwooooffeerr SSppeeaakkeerr CCoonnnneeccttiioonn - Inthis amplifier combination eachamplifiers must drive its own sepa-rate subwoofer(s). Connect thespeaker terminals of each amplifierto any combination of one or moresubwoofers that results in nominalimpedance between one and fourohms. Make sure that each amplifiersees the same speaker impedance.

WWAARRNNIINNGG:: The amplifier’s gain control is bypassed completelyin SLAVE mode. Do NNOOTT move the MASTER/SLAVEswitch to SLAVE position when the amplifier isconnected and playing. Do NNOOTT connect any signalsource to the amplifier in SLAVE mode thatexceeds 200mV.

DO NOTconnect loads of less than 2 ohmswhen connecting to amplifiers inthe External Synced Bridged combi-nation.

WWAARRNNIINNGG:: Two wires of 12AWG minimum must beconnected between the negative sub out termi-nals of the master and slave amplifiers.

MULTIPLE AMPLIFIER COMBINATIONS

The Directed D1200/D2400 subwooferamplifiers can also be used in multiplesof the master/slave combinationsallowing for unlimited expansion to asystems subwoofer section. To usemultiples of amplifier combinations thefollowing directions must be adhered tofor best results.

AAuuddiioo ssiiggnnaall - Divide the head unitor processor audio signal to themaster amplifiers by using RCA Yadapters. Be sure to divide them aneven number of times to ensure theinput level at each master amplifieris matched.

AAmmpplliiffiieerr ccoonnffiigguurraattiioonn - Set upeach master/slave amplifier combi-nation as described for the combi-nation type being used. (Refer tothe Parallel Synced Gain or theExternal Synced Bridged section ofthis guide for amplifier and speakerconnection descriptions.)

CROSSOVER SETTINGS AND GAIN ADJUSTMENT

Your Directed Audio power amplifier needs to be adjusted carefully to achievemaximum performance. These are some guidelines to follow when fine-tuning theamplifier.

Because this amplifier is only designed for subwoofer applications, the low-passcrossover is active at all times. The crossover point is adjustable to allow moreprecise system operation.

Try and keep the setting low enough to prevent image smearing (you should notbe able to hear male voices from the subwoofer) but not so low as to create a gapbetween the subwoofer and the mid-bass/midrange speakers. It will be to youradvantage to spend some extra time with this adjustment, listening to familiarmusic or system set-up discs to achieve the kind of musical reproduction that youprefer.

The gain adjustment allows you to set proper signal match for clean, quiet ampli-fier operation. Start by playing some music you are familiar with. With the gainadjustment on the amplifier in the middle of its rotation, bring up the volume onyour head unit to the 3/4 volume setting or until you start to hear distortion orclipping. If you hear distortion before you reach the 3/4 volume setting of yourhead unit, reduce the gain setting on the amplifier and start to raise the head unitvolume again. When you can listen to the music at or slightly above 3/4 on yourhead unit without audible distortion, slowly raise the gain of the amplifier untildistortion is heard, then back off the gain until the distortion is not audible. Thissetting will allow you to reach full output with all but the quietest of source mate-rial, while avoiding excessive noise in the system.

For systems using the Remote Sub Level Adjustment, increase the subwoofer gainon the amplifier by 25% and set the Remote Sub Level knob to the center positionafter making all system gain and filter adjustments. This will give the Remote SubLevel Control a wider range of adjustment to the subwoofer output.

You should take into consideration the effect that gain adjustment has on systemfrequency response and staging. Again, plan on spending some time with musicthat you know getting the gain and crossover settings the way you like. Test discsand analyzers may help with this process, but in the end it's your ears that count--listen to the music!

LED TUBE INSTALLATION (OPTIONAL)

This Directed Audio amplifier has been designed with a custom heat sink that canaccommodate two (optional—not supplied) VARAD LED tubes.

1. Before installing the LED tubes, remove and discard the mounting feet from theVARAD LED tubes.

2. Slide each LED tube assembly into your Directed Audio amplifier heat sink. Ensurethat the LEDs are facing out for optimal visibility. The wires from the LED tubeassembly should be on the signal input end of the amplifier. The Black wire fromthe LED tube is ground and the Black/White wire from the LED tube is power.

4. Run the two wires from the tube assembly and connect them to the 4-pinLED/FAN input connector. Refer to the LED/FAN harness diagram given earlier inthis manual.

NNOOTTEE:: If the optional fan IS NOT being used, it is recommended that the second LED tube be wired to this circuit. If the optionalfan is being used, it is recommended that the second LED tube be wired in parallel with the first LED tube.
