Welcome to the new Kappa year! I cannot wait to get started. This year promises to be full of opportunities to strengthen the bonds of friendship and sisterhood we value as members of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Friendship, mutual support, connections: are they the ideals that lighted your path to Kappa? They were for me as a freshman at the University of Vermont, and continue to be as I welcome Kappa into my life as an alumna and as President of our Association. Connections. We’ll em-brace the theme of connect this year as we look to dif-ferent ways to connect with one another, with new mem-bers, with our PanHellenic
sisters, and with our commu-nity. Connections. That’s what brought me back to Kappa only two years ago on Founders Day. It was that feeling of being instantly connected to all of the wom-en in the room. It was the connection back to my col-lege days, some 30 years ago, as we joined together to sing songs that only we as Kappas knew. It was the connection to the beautiful and the good. Connections. We are ex-ploring new ways to connect to you this year. You re-ceived a postcard highlight-ing our event calendar and informing you of how to con-nect to our association. We’re texting and emailing you with invitations to join us. You may receive my message in your mailbox or in your in-box, but this news-letter will connect over 230 Kappas in the Clearwater area. On Sunday, October 5th, many KKG alumnae from the University of Florida will be participating again in the National Lung Cancer Part-nership's Free to Breathe Walk in honor of their Epsi-lon Phi sister Ali Pickard. Ali was a healthy, vibrant, non-smoking 37 year old when she was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer in 2010. Ali, who was always full of life, died at the age of 40. In her last year of life, Ali rallied her Kappa sisters to support Free to Breathe in
any way possible.
To preserve Ali’s legacy, Sherri McKee Reyes, Treas-urer of CBAA, together with
a few of her ΕΦ sisters from UF, formed Team Ali Strong. Sherri is also on the planning committee for the inaugural Free to Breathe 5k Event in Tampa on October 5, 2014 at Al Lopez Park. Please mark your calendars, and please join this special team of sisterhood – Team Ali
Strong.
The Free to Breathe event series is the nation’s largest branded lung cancer aware-ness series, including 41 events, a National Walk and growing. The purpose of the events is to unite people in communities across the nation that are passionate about creating public awareness of
lung cancer and raising vital
funding to support research.
Visit www.freetobreathe.org/tampa to contribute to or to join Sherri’s team. You are also welcome to form your own team. Regardless, it will be wonderful to come to-gether to honor the lives we have lost to lung cancer, and celebrate the lives that have
been saved.

something new. The world seemed to be moving too slowly. We determined that nothing short of a Greek-letter
fraternity would satisfy us. We three then admitted Anna Willits to our solemn councils.” ~ Lou Bennett
In June, 1,105 Kappas gath-ered in Houston, Texas, to celebrate the Fraternity’s 70th Biennial Convention. The week was filled with educa-tional sessions, business meetings, motivational speakers, elections and evening celebrations. At Convention, delegates voted on a number of amendments to the Fraternity Bylaws and Standing Rules. Below are just a few of the key chang-es: Per Capita increase—There
was a Five dollar ($5) per capita fee increase at both the alumna and col-legiate level, which assists with Fraternity expenses such as alumnae and chapter assistance, tech-nology, staff, reporting, training, and mailing The Key magazine.
GPA Recruitment – Women
participating in Recruit-ment directly out of high school must have attained a B+ average. Collegiate women must have at-tained a B- average for the previous term to be considered for member-ship.
GPA Officers – Women
wishing to serve on Chapter Council must now attain a B- academic av-erage for the previous term.

Kappa has formed a part-nership with Group Interac-tive Networks (GIN) to help manage chapter and alum-nae association communica-tion. With this new partner-ship, each of Kappa’s alum-nae associations will have their own public-facing web-site and GINSystem, which is a members-only area allow-ing for personalized, private and secure communication at the association level. Simplified, it’s a new & im-
proved website with a sim-pler web address and mod-ern features. GIN will ex-pand the way we connect to our members with an en-hanced communication plat-form.

website: clearwaterbay.kappa.org The new GIN system website is cur-rently “under construction”, but I en-courage you to navigate to the page
clearwaterbay.kappa.org and have a look around. Scroll to the bottom of the page and log in using your Kappa name and password. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the new website. You’ll find some stock photos and missing infor-mation, but the “About Kappa” tab is worth a look. For now, please continue to use our

clearwater for Association news and contact information until we can kick start the new website and load fea-tures and events. I expect to roll-out

Spotlight on Philanthropy
Member of Clearwater Bay consider it a privilege to contribute to the Kap-pa Kappa Gamma Foundation, to serve our national philanthropy, Reading Is Fundamental, our local phi-lanthropy, Clothes to Kids, and to assist our Kappa Chapters in Florida. It is the loyalty of our dues-paying members that allows us to provide this important support and pre-serves and strengthens our Associa-tion. Last year, we donated $250 to RIF and collected over 50 books for local reading programs. Candy Hennes-sey visited the Tarpon Springs Head Start program on June 4 with the books suitable for preschoolers. It was the last day of the program until the fall and the children were each allowed to take a book so they could have a book for the summer. Candy reminded us, “Unfortunately, books in
the home is often not the case for
these kids.”
Clearwater Bay contributed $100 to Clothes to Kids, our local philanthro-py. Here is an excerpt from the let-ter we received from Patti Hanks,
Executive Director:
“...I continue to be amazed at the amount of thank you cards we re-ceive in the mail. Many of them have personal, hand-drawn or hand paint-ed pictures from the kids that shop with us. Want to know what they draw the most? Wardrobes! Your donation helps make a lot of complete wardrobes possi-ble...providing wardrobes to low-income or in crisis school-aged chil-dren, all free of charge.
Together with our donations to RIF and to CTK, Clearwater Bay’s philan-thropic giving totaled $1325. CBAA provided $400 to the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation, $125 to Rose McGill Holiday Sharing and $450 to our Florida Kappa Chapters for schol-arship support.
