We believe it is normal for Catholics to be missionary disciples!

As Catholic missionary disciples we aspire to… know Jesus Christ personally and live in the power of the Holy Spirit; pray and read the Bible daily; participate in small faith-sharing groups; express contagious faith that attracts others; use our gifts to serve others, especially the poor; be faithful Catholics in belief and behavior; be generous with all of our resources.

S IXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER 4 M A Y 1 7 , 2 0 2 0

May 12, 2020 Dear brothers and sisters, I write today to share some measure of hope during this difficult time of pandemic and social dis-tancing. In recent weeks, we have watched with relief as our State of Michigan gradually opened to select businesses and activities, with prudent precautions firmly in place to prevent a severe “second wave” of the coronavirus pandemic. In keeping with this gradual reopening of our society, it is necessary that we make similar arrangements within our local Church to allow once again for the communal celebration of Holy Mass, which at its core is the most “essential” activity known to our world. In these liturgical directives you will see details for the return to public Mass on May 19, 2020. The most important category of individuals to participate at Mass at this time should be those preparing to enter the Catholic Church in the weeks ahead. These directives will need strict adherence for all public liturgies, including weddings, funerals, and baptisms. The Mass you may attend in the weeks ahead will look and feel quite different from the Mass you remember from two months ago. It will be imperative for all of us – pastors, parish staff, volunteers, and all the faithful – to work together dur-ing these times. The pandemic is not over and safety precautions must be followed in order to pro-mote the continued health and safety of everyone in our community. Additionally I am sharing with you updated liturgical guidelines, which have been assembled by the COVID-19 Liturgical Committee. These guidelines have taken into account expert advice from the medical community, liturgical experts, and public health leaders. They are meant to assist pastors and the faithful in safely participating in Holy Mass while maintaining the sound health precautions counseled by health and government officials. Through it all, we must remember that this virus does not discriminate between gatherings; a group gathered for sacred worship is not immune by the merits of its gathering. It is only through our careful observance of these precautions that we make it possible to resume public Mass. For more information about all these guidelines and other re-sources, please visit www.aod.org/emergencyresponse. When this pandemic began, I directed priests of the Archdiocese of Detroit to suspend all public Masses as we assessed the situation and explored a safe way to bring Christ to the people, both through the Word of God and the Sacraments. This was an unfortunate but necessary decision in light of the severity of the pandemic and the number of unknowns associated with this new and deadly virus. Know that I have prayed during this time for you, the faithful of southeast Michigan, es-pecially during my private and live streamed Masses. I pray you have felt the loving comfort of Christ as you awaited the day you could return to his Real Presence in the Eucharist. And I rejoice with you and thank God today as we move toward the gradual reopening of our parish communities. Asking the continued intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, The Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron Archbishop of Detroit

Solemn act follows reconsecration of the nations by the bishops of the United States and Canada on Friday DETROIT — Detroit Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron continued the rotation the archdiocese’s bishops in reciting the rosary at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament on May 6, praying for an end to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each week since the pandemic began, Detroit’s bishops have prayed the rosary each Wednesday at the cathedral, livestreamed to the faithful.

Archbishop Vigneron then reconsecrated the Archdiocese of Detroit to Mary, Mother of the Church, asking for her intercession and protec-tion against the coronavirus, joining bishops across Canada, Mexico and the United States in invoking the Blessed Mother’s protection. “’Peace be with you,’” Archbishop Vigneron said to begin the livestream. “When our Lord greeted the disciples, he used this same greeting, ‘Peace be with you.’ We are coincided with this peace, in this difficult time, as we turn as a Church to Mary, Mother of Peace and the Church, to help all those affected by this pan-demic. As we join together to renew the conse-cration of our country to the Mother of God, we implore to her most necessarily for her eternal care, the care for all of us, her children.”

Archbishop Vigneron then recited the Glorious Mysteries of the rosary with Deacon Drew Mabee, a fourth-year seminarian from Sacred Heart Major Seminary, who is to be ordained a priest this June.

Archbishop Vigneron reminded the faithful that the usual conditions for receiving a plenary indul-gence for reciting the rosary during the coronavirus pandemic may be fulfilled at a later date. Those usual conditions include the sacrament of reconciliation, reception of holy Communion, praying for the intentions of the Holy Father and a detachment from sin. After the rosary, Archbishop Vigneron entrusted the archdiocese to the care of the Blessed Virgin, asking for God’s protection over front-line workers, those working to fine a cure to the COVID-19 disease, those inflicted with the disease, those who have died in the pandemic and the family and loved ones who have suffered because of the virus. “Mary, let every desire be heard and flourish in charity for all who look to you in this time of cri-sis,” Archbishop Vigneron said. “Guide us, we pray, along the path of holiness, Mary, Our Moth-er. Bring everyone under your protection, entrusting everyone to your beloved son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord.”

IMPORTANT NOTICE

6th

Sunday of Easter

"For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be God’s will, than for doing evil.” (1 Peter 3:17) The old line says “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Many of us are diligent in our plan-ning and making sure things are progressing smooth-ly. Then disaster strikes, we don’t get the result that was intended or an unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may respond negatively and ask, “Why me? I did everything right!” Here’s the thing – adversity humbles us and reminds us of our depend-ence on God and not on our own self-reliance. Rest assured, God has a better plan in store for you. Stewards of the Church

In his First Letter, St. Peter proclaims to the faithful: Al-ways be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gen-tleness and reverence. In St. John’s Gospel, Jesus pro-fesses to His followers that He will ask the Father, Who will give them an Advocate to strengthen their faith — a Spirit of Truth, Whom the world cannot accept. The Scripture passage from the Acts of the Apostles demon-strates the power of the Holy Spirit released to believers in Christ. The Holy Spirit moves faith-filled stewards to profess Truth in support of Catholic teaching against all attacks on life, marriage, and other moral issues em-braced by today’s secular society. Learn more about these Truths through Michigan Right to Life at www.rtl.org, the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) at www.ewtn.com, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
