Overweight People
• 43.4% of men and 33.7% women in the UK were overweight in 2002, figure is rising
• Overweight is a body mass index of 25-29.9 kg/m2
• Estimated that by 2020• One third of all adults and• 50% of children will be obese
• Not just a problem in developed countries

• 22.1% of men and 22.8% women were obese in 2002
• 11.8 million people in the UK were obese in 2002, figure is rising
• Levels of obesity have tripled since 1980• Obesity is greater than 10% in excess of
normal weight (BMI>30kg/m2).
Causes of Obesity
• Nature vs nurture• Decreased physical activity• Overeating• Age
Cost to the UK:• 18 million sick days• £70,000+ obesity infirmity• 30,000 deaths a year• 40,000 lost years of working life

• Hypertension– 6 times higher
• Diabetes– Non-insulin dependent diabetes increases 10 fold
• Coronary Heart Disease– Affects plasma cholesterol and blood pressure

– Women have a high risk of• Breast, uterine and gall bladder cancer

Weight Control and Reduction
• Calculate body mass index or use waist measurement to determine healthy weight
• Set reasonable weight loss goal• Establish a caloric deficit• Diet must be adequate in all nutrients• Eat a mixed diet in reduced quantity• Eating habits and lifestyle changes
