2017-2018 High School Profile Created by Dr. Robert Quinlan CEEB: 330583 Overview: School and Community Studios: Dance Drama Fine Arts Instrumental Vocal Brooklyn High School of the Arts (Brooklyn Arts) is a comprehensive four-year arts high school enrolling 870 students in grades nine through twelve. The Class of 2018 has 189 students. Brooklyn Arts is accredited by the New York State Board of Regents and offers many College Board approved Advanced Placement courses. Brooklyn Arts is a member of the College Access Consortium of New York (CACNY) and is a member of the National Art Education Association and is proud to be a Tony Bennett Partner School. Our Pre-Conservatory Arts Program has received the highest honors. The Jazz Band and Vocal Select Choir have proven to be champions statewide receiving “Gold, with Distinction” and “Gold” honors, exhibiting the highest standards. Our Theatre department was one of five schools from New York City to be selected to perform in the critically acclaimed production of A Raisin in the Sun at the Shubert Foundation High School Theatre Festival, which took place at the Winter Garden Theatre in Broadway. The Musical Theatre’s production of Little Shop of Horrors wowed audiences from around the city with sold-out performances. Students in our Fine Arts program were lauded for their exceptional artwork and received citywide honors and recognition including Class of 2017 Cyra Cupid’s Faces of Youth being on exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Brooklyn Arts’ Dance department is one of the finest preparatory programs for dancers in the city. Students are classically trained in ballet and receive the finest instruction in modern dance. Class of 2017’s senior dance concert, titled Memories, was met with resounding success after its sold- out run in May. Academics at Brooklyn Arts provide the rigor for students seeking college admission. We offer an ever-increasing number of Regents and Advance Placement courses in all academic disciplines. We also offer partnerships with the City University of New York and Long Island University for advanced students seeking opportunities to gain college credit while at Brooklyn Arts. With our AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, students who require additional support gain techniques to allow for mastery in academic areas. Our 90% passing rate in the English/Language Arts Regents allows students to take Advance Placement classes in their sophomore year. As an administration and staff, it is our ultimate goal to make this crucial time in our students’ lives memorable and rewarding. We aim to educate our students using a holistic approach. Expectations are high and self-motivation and determination are encouraged and nurtured. At Brooklyn Arts students have the unique experience of getting a rigorous and vibrant academic program with a full array of personalized studios, which is built into daily programs. The school population is comprised of 22% Hispanic/Latino, 3% Asian, 68% African American, and 7% White/Multi-Ethnic students. Every student has a 45-minute, 9-period daily schedule. Students typically take 7 to 8 credits per semester. Brooklyn Arts is on pace to offer for the 2018-2019 school year the opportunity for students to have a pathway towards earning an Arts-endorsed diploma as graduates will have attained ten credits in their respective studio.
