skills which characterise relationships and other people, or how you approach interactions.

For many people, the so-called soft skills are often some of the most difficult skills to develop. Job-re-lated expertise (hard skills) are essential in any profession. However, over the last 10 years, under-standing has grown that perhaps soft skills may ul-timately be more important in determining levels of success.

Hard skills are a basic minimum necessity in order to operate in a particular workplace. Whether or not you are successful in your career may depend on how developed your soft skills are.

Where your manners are most prominent and on display are at the dinner table. Table manners have evolved over centuries to make eating with others pleasant and sociable. Good table manners are easy to learn, and once you have mastered the skill, it will become part of your everyday life.

Proper table manners are associated with competence and professionalism. Bad table manners leave a sloppy impression and signal a lack of attention to detail. In this module, you will learn about the different business events, including galas, buffets, cocktail parties and business lunches.

The world has become a very small place, and to travel either for business or pleasure is always a privilege. An informed traveller is a safe traveller. When planning a trip abroad, try to study ahead of time to learn as much as possible about the customs, ways of doing business and the potential pitfalls.

Many times, wine is the only beverage that is served at a formal meal – with the exception of champagne, grape juice and water of course. This module will give you a good general knowledge of wine. When choosing wine, if you are not an expert, always ask for the help of a sommelier (wine steward).

02PLAN AN EVENT

Events form part of business and may range from a simple boardroom lunch and a high tea to a huge banquet, or a product launch. The secret is not to overlook something and to make sure the event is a success. You need to use event management checklists and action plans to plan events efficiently.
