CAUSES OF OBESITY
http://www.ted.com/talks/ellen_gustafson_obesity_hunger_1_global_food_issue.html
• Overeating• Insufficient vitamins and nutrients• Too much fast/junk food• Insufficient levels of physical activity
1 billion people are hungry and 1 billion people (worldwide) are obese…is there a relationship?
YES!
WHERE IN THE WORLD…?
A CLOSER LOOK

CULTURAL ASPECTS
Common greeting: “Have you eaten yet?” Many celebrations throughout the year
contribute to major food intake No need of an excuse to celebrate Common to eat 6 meals a day More food available=more “love” you have
to offer
HISTORICAL ASPECTS
Many Filipinos used to be starving greater appreciation for food indulging their children when junk food became cheaper and more readily available overweight/obese children
Older generation Filipinos find heavy children cute and healthy
ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS
Location makes it prone to natural disasters
+Very hot, humid and tropical
+2.8 million people exposed to toxic pollution
=People spending more time sitting down indoors and
less time being active outside
ECONOMIC ASPECTS
Public health programs are only 0.10% of the whole government budget
They wouldn’t need to increase their allotted healthcare budget by much to make a significant impact

POLITICAL ASPECTS President issued a statement regarding the issue
Noted the rise in overweight and obese Filipinos The main people affected were the working and middle class resulting in
decreased productivity and less economic growth. Focus for campaigning against obesity must be redirected to the children,
rather than primarily adults. The support to accomplish the desired task of reducing obesity must be
recruited from not only the awareness campaign, but the health professionals as well.
PASOO believes the difference can be made in the Filipino lifestyle through education, research, and networking.

MOVE

GOAL 1 AND OBJECTIVES
Increase awareness of the dangers of fast food and a sedentary lifestyle via education, billboards, and governmental programs• By 2015, all students will attend a weekly one hour long
nutritional education classes at school provided for by the MOVE program
• By 2020, 60% of graduating seniors will score a 75% or higher on a cumulative nutrition exam based on the classes they took through the MOVE program.
With the education, we hope that obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, etc will be decreased.
GOAL 2 AND OBJECTIVES

content by 15% according to new governmental regulations By 2015, all McDonald’s and Jollibee’s will have bike-only
