OVERVIEW OF MECHANICAL DEPARTMENT

Mechanical Department plays a vital role in the organization by providing its support to bothtrain operations and project division.

There are 411 employees in the Non-Running (C&W) cadre and 447 employees in the Running cadre(As on 31.01.2019).

There are two regions in Konkan Railway with regional headquarters at Ratnagiri and Karwar.The brief description of organization and activities undertaken by Mechanical Department inthe two regions are given below

A. RATNAGIRI REGION

Mechanical department of Ratnagiri region is managed by one RME (Senior Scale Executive)and one AME (Junior Scale Executive)

ACTIVITY CENTERS.

ROHA:- There is a Running Room of 53 beds at Roha which is used by the crew of KRCLand Central Railway. The management of running room is outsourced. The average dailyoccupancy is 66. With start of crew interchange at Roha, the occupancy of this running roomhas increased. A proposal to increase its capacity by 18 beds in under process. It is alsoplanned to provide air-conditioning in this running room by 2019.

KOLAD:- Kolad is loading point for RO-RO wagons. Supervision of truck loading from safetypoint of view, checking of lashing arrangement and continuity check is done by C& W stafffrom which one Supervisor (round the clock on demand) and 4 Artisans are posted.

CHIPLUN: At Chiplun, two Supervisors, 27 Artisans and 9 Khalasis are posted. Majoractivities in Chiplun are:-

a. Fueling of all freight train locos (approximately 12 locos per day) and12619/12620, 50104 and 11004 / 11003 & holiday specials, passenger train locos,track machines and RMVs. There is an RCD (Fueling Installation) consisting oftwo large storage tanks of 656KL each with a daily fuel issue of about 23 KL

b. Maintenance of Two Rail Maintenance Vehicles (RMVs).c. Operation and Maintenance of CSM 954 track tamping machine d. Freight train examination for loading at Ratnagiri and related wagon repair (This

activity is discontinued now due to stoppage of loading at Ratnagiri) e. Minor attention to any rolling stock (Carriage/wagon/loco) unusual enroute

RATNAGIRI:- There are 10 Supervisors, 28 Artisans and 15 Khalasis posted at Ratnagiri.There is a Coach Maintenance Pit line of 18 coach length along with a simple coach washingplant (This Pitline is planned to be dismantled being very old and structurally weak and withtransfer of maintenance of Ratnagiri-Dadar Passenger rake to Madgaon, A 24 coach pitlinewith integrated maintenance of both conventional/LHB coaches and DEMU/MEMU isproposed). There is also a Carriage & Wagon Maintenance Shed with holding of 4 wagons.There is a small RCD with storage capacity of 70KL (discontinued for now). There is a crewlobby for booking/ management of 116 Running and a 48 bed running room for running staffof both Konkan and Central Railway.

Major activities are:-a. Rolling In examination of through mail / express train and attention to any coaching

unusual including site for Automatic Train Examination System (ATES)b. Operation and Maintenance of Track Machines including UNIMAT 8274 and UTVc. Maintenance of Six RMVs.d. Maintenance of Accident Relief Medical Van and restoration and re-railment work in

the event of an accident.e. Fueling of goods train locos on need basis. (Kept in suspension as on date)f. Booking of 116 Running staff daily from Crew Lobbyg. Providing Rest facilities to Running staff of Verna and Central Railway. There is

also one small running room at Swanatwadi of 6 bed capacity.

B. KARWAR REGION.

ORGANIZATION: - There is one Sr.RME who is overall incharge of the region withone SME and one AME posted at Verna and one AME posted at Madgaon.

ACTIVITY CENTERS.

THOKUR:- At Thokur there is a small Wagon Depot to service the HPCL siding. Itcarries out RBPC , intensive and safe to run examination of Petroleum wagons. It alsoservices Ro-Ro loading/unloading at Suratkal.There are 5 Supervisors, 7 MasterCraftmen 15 Technicians and 4 Khalasis posted at Thokur.

SURATKAL:- At Suratkal there is a running room with 18 beds and presently 15running staff are using it daily. Suratkal is also headquarter for 23 running staff whichare primarily utilized for running BOBRN services for Udupi Power House.

MADGAON: Sr RME of Karwar region has his office at Coach Care Centre, Madgaon.

a. Coaching Depot: There are two pit lines of 24 coach length along with oneAutomatic Coach Washing Plant. There is also an IOH shed with coach holdingcapacity with modern design without EOT. This IOH shed is used for carrying outIOH schedules of coaches and for coaches requiring major repairs including lifting.

There are 178 coaches and two DEMU rakes based at this depot. This depot ismanned by 14 Supervisors, 75 MCM/Artisans and 17 Khalasis. The activities are:

1. Primary maintenance of Mandovi / Konkan Kanya 10111/10112/ 10104/10103,Madgaon- Sawantwadi-Diwa Passenger 50108/50107, 50102/50101 Madgaon-Ratnagiri- Dadar Passenger and 70106/70105 Madgaon-Mangalore DEMU rakes

2. Secondary maintenance of Madgaon-Nizamuddin Rajdhani (bi-weekly), GoaSampark Kranti (bi-weekly) and Madgaon- Ernakulam (weekly) and many otherWinter/Summer/Holiday Specials.

3. Rolling In of all mail/express/passenger trains and any unusual / minor repairs atplatform or enroute. One Automated Train Examination System (ATES) has alsobeen installed recently between Madgaon and Verna.

4. In addition, Madgaon also caters to other end attention to prestigious trains likeTejas (at Karmali), LTT-MAO Janshatabdi Express, LTT-MAO Double DeckerExpress and MAQ-MAO Intercity Express.

b. RCD Madgaon has the largest RCD on KRCL which has storage facilities of 354 x2 KL and daily issue of approximately 45 KL.

c. Crew Lobby & Running room: 113 no. of mail/express/passenger crew areheadquartered at Madgaon. There is 17 bed Running room to cater to mail/expressRunning staff of Ratnagiri region and S.W. Railway. There is one more restingfacility for running staff with 6 beds created at Karwar station.

VERNA: This is major activity center for the Mechanical dept. It has Loco, Wagon &DEMU Maintenance facilities. There are 16 Supervisors, 102 MCM/Artisans and 36Khalasis headquartered at Verna. The major activities at Verna are:-

1. Maintenance of Accident Relief Train including 140T break down crane andrestoration and re-railment work in the event of an accident.

2. Maintenance of Accident Relief Medical Van.3. Maintenance of 04 sets of DEMU rakes.4. Intensive examination of all types of freight trains and repair to all types of Wagons.5. Maintenance and operation of CSM-946, CSM-947, UNIMAT, BCM, BRM, UTV6. Maintenance of 4 Rail Maintenance Vehicle (RMVs).7. Maintenance of M&P of Mechanical department 8. Minor repair of locomotives9. There is a small Running room of 12 beds which is used by Running staff of

Ratnagiri. There is also a crew Lobby, which manages 92 running 10.There is an RCD having tank capacity of 330 x 2 KL. The daily issue is 24KL.
