G.fast’s capacity to 2 Gbit/s using spectrum up to 212 MHz
40G Fibre to the Home (NG-PON2): First series of
standards to provide broadband access beyond 10 Gbit/s
Rural broadband: ITU-T L.1700 brings broadband to rural
communities, leveraging lightweight optical fibre with a focus
on ease of deployment, cost-efficiency and reliability.
Broaband cable and TV: New standard for 4K UHD TV
set-top boxes with a functional specification of such cable
set-top boxes
Fibre foundations
Revisions to ITU-T G.652 and G.657 extend and
optimize the use of these optical fibres beyond their
current capabilities
Revised ITU-T G.654, which traditionally dealt with the
characteristics of fibres for submarine cables, includes a
new subcategory of fibre (G.654.E fibre) to support
coherent digital transmission systems in terrestrial

• SG12 currently is extending the standards to provide
support for ‘4K’ UHD video encoded using ITU-T
H.264, ITU-T H.265 and VP9.

New ITU-T Focus Group on “Data Processing and

• SG20 established the new FG-DPM to research data

point equipment, as well as earthing for radio base stations and
miniature base stations

Conformity and interoperability
• A new guideline defines the ITU-T Conformity Assessment Steering

Systems and Schemes such as IEC and ILAC
• ITU-T CASC is currently developing guidelines to detail collaboration
mechanisms with accreditation bodies such as IECEE and ILAC
• ITU-T CASC established a list of ITU-T Recommendations - subjects for
future joint certification schemes (e.g. ITU-T P.1140, ITU-T P.1100, ITU-T
P.1110 and K.116)
• ITU’s ‘ICT product conformity database’ contains more than 500 entries

• New ITU-T Y.1545.1 provides guidance to assist regulators to monitoring the
QoS of IP network services offered by Internet service providers
• New Recommendation ITU-T Q.3960 “Framework for Internet related

• SG16 started a new pilot project of conformity assessment against ITU-T
H.700-series IPTV
• SG16 has established an IPTV testing team for conformity testing of IPTV
• The IPTV testing team and Keio University conducted successful
conformance testing on ITU-T H.721 at the January 2017 meeting of SG16

Collaboration
ITU and the NGMN Alliance cooperation agreement formalizes mutual
commitment to the development of next-generation mobile broadband
technologies and affirms NGMN’s support for ITU’s international
standardization of 5G systems.
The 16th meeting of the IEC/ISO/ITU World Standards Cooperation
(WSC) took place on 16 February 2017 and was hosted by ITU.
• The theme of World Standards Day 2017 (14 October) will be
“Standards make cities smarter”
ETSI and ITU continue to enjoy successful collaboration involving SGs 5,
11 and 17

ITU cooperation agreement with the European Committee for
Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and the European
