    OVERVIEW OF DENGUE HEMORRHAGIC FEVER

Dengue fever usually affects people living in tropical regions and it manifests with a suddenepisode of high fever.

More serious form of Dengue fever is called Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and DengueShock Syndrome (DSS) and affects a small proportion of patients who are affected by denguefever. It is believed that there is a secondary infection by a different dengue virus serotype thatleads to the development of DHF.

In Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever there is leakage of the plasma and its escape from the bloodstream leading to bleeding. Lack of blood clotting is also observed.

Majority of the dengue cases were from:

Cebu City topped other cities in the entire Central Visayas in the number of dengue cases and deaths.

The number of dengue cases recorded as of July 14, 2012 from January this year hasreached 1,642 with seven deaths compared to only 796 cases with eight deaths during thesame period last year.

Incidence rate is the ratio of the population to the number of cases that occurred in the barangay.

The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded 32,193 dengue cases nationwide with 195 deaths fromJanuary to June 2 this year, surpassing the 30,989 cases during the same period last year.
