GATHERING IN

PRELUDE Flor Peeters Aria (1903-1986)

INTROIT G. T. Thalben-Ball If anyone will follow me (1896-1987) CALL TO WORSHIP - a table blessing One: Bless us O Lord All: and these gifts which we are about to receive. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

HYMN No. 321 AURELIA The Church’s One Foundation WELCOME PRAYER OF CONFESSION - from Walter Brueggemann One: Fountain of Mercy, hear our prayer for mercy. All: Our world grows weary of the battering and the vicious cycles that devour us. We seem to have no capacity to break those vicious cycles of anti-neighborliness and self-hate. We turn, like our people always have, to you, single source of newness. Waiting father, in your mercy receive us and all our weary neighbors. Remembering mother, hold us and all our desperate friends. Passionate lover, in your mercy cherish all our enemies. Gift giver, in your mercy embrace all those who are strangers to us, who are your well-beloved children. Make us, altogether, new. SILENT CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF PARDON

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands that holy things have taken; let ears that now have heard thy songs

to clamor never waken.

Lord, may the tongues which “Holy” sang keep free from all deceiving;

the eyes which saw thy love be bright, thy blessed hope perceiving.

The feet that tread thy hallowed courts

from light do thou not banish; the bodies by thy body fed

with thy new life replenish.

Please depart quietly for those who wish to listen to the postlude. POSTLUDE Christian Cappelen Postlude in F (1845-1916) The cover artwork is Christ Calling the Apostles Peter and Andrew by Duccio di Buoninsegna (c. 1255-c. 1318), an Italian painter active in Siena. His works are painted on wood panels, with egg tempera paint and gold leaf embellishments; his mastery of tempera set him apart from his contemporaries. In this painting, Peter and Andrew are depicted as twins, showing the companionship and unity of their vocations.

will be held in the sanctuary following worship on Sunday, February 9, 2020. All business proper to a general meeting of our congregation will be addressed. Saturday, February 15 Save the date! The OPC Hootenanny will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Bring your family & friends for a night full of good food, square dancing, games, and fellowship. Everyone is welcome! All proceeds will go toward the Feed My Starving Children MobilePack, which OPC co-hosts. (The MobilePack is scheduled for Saturday, April 25 at Bonner High School in Upper Darby; more info to come.) This is the 3rd year for the Hootenanny and we promise you’ll have a good time! Tickets will be on sale soon. Questions? Contact Becky Lazo, [email protected], or LaToya Richie. Friday, March 27 You are invited to join the conversation about the long-term vision of Overbrook Presbyterian Church as we plan to meet the needs and dreams of the future! Hold the date for the OPC Vision Summit: Friday, March 27, 2020, at 6:30 p.m. At this summit, we will be guided through an intentional process for discerning our mission statement, our core values, and our long-term goals as a church. With the help of our trained consultants, Ministry Architects, we will work together to shape the scope of OPC’s work in the community. There will be much more information shared as we get closer. The entire church is invited. Light refreshments will be served. Bring your best ideas! Sunday, March 29 During worship, the Overbrook Junior Choir will present the chancel drama The Tale of the Three Trees. Based on an American folk story, this wonderful tale is a perfect message for the season of Lent. The Choir and its directors, Chris Gage and volunteer Marcia Sommers, are inviting all children and youth in grades 2-7 to get involved in this production. Participants do not need any prior experience singing in the Junior Choir. Because this is a very busy time of year, we will offer opportunities for practice different from the usual Junior Choir schedule. Some Monday evening rehearsals will remain, but we have added Sunday afternoons as another option. See the newsletter for details or contact Chris at [email protected].
