    Greetings Snowdrifters:

The ski season is upon us, along with tons of snow at our favorite mountain. Mammoth Mountain just announced that they had the most amount of snow in the world with 190 inches! Our first trip, the season opener is led by Gates Ingram. The next trip will be Cheryl Riess' trip to Park City, Utah. Both trips promise to be out-standing, a Snowdrifters tradition.

Our December meeting at Tio Leo's was a success with the Ma-rines and their annual "Toys for Tots" which landed them many won-derful toys for the little "ankle bit-ers". In the true Christmas spirit, Jim Dickinson took up a collection during the meeting and raised an additional $130 for the cause.

Our summer meetings will be in a different location next year due to the alcohol ban in Kate Sessions Park. We realize that our quiet, peaceful meetings were not the rea-son that the City of San Diego de-cided to enforce a ban on alcohol in the park. Our Programs and Meet-ings Director, Dave Arnold, is cur-rently looking for a new site for our meetings. We have had multiple suggestions from our members for a new summer meeting site. We will be evaluating each suggestion in the coming months and will advertise our selection prior to the first sum-mer meeting. WHAT’S INSIDE !! and overall quality of the site. Please don't hesitate to contact Dave with suggestions for a new summer meeting site.

The San Diego Council Happy Hour at the Hotel Del Coronado was a wonderful event. It was good to see familiar faces and re-connect with our brothers and sisters in other Ski Clubs. The group started in the pub for some warming adult drinks and then pro-ceeded up to the magnificent lobby Christmas Tree for some good old fashioned caroling.

Health/Safety, Etc. from the VP: Even though we are already into the ski season, what

with the Aspen trip already in the books, the first Mammoth trip just around the corner, the Park City trip looming large in late January and the “SNOW” monsters dumping incredi‐ble amounts of snow all over the U.S. of A especially in the Sierras, it is time to SERIOUSLY get in shape, if you have not already done so.  It is never too early to begin preparing yourself for the demands of a sport that is far more enjoyable if you are in shape and way, way safer.

Physical therapists and doctors say advance preparation may help you avoid injuries and soreness.  Downhill skiing and/or boarding puts heavy demands on muscles, tendons and ligaments in and around the shoulders, hip and knees.  If you are not in shape, you can expect to be sore and you may (actually will) increase your chances of being injured.  Start well in advance (like year around) of your first planned ski trip to work on your cardiovascular fitness, flexibility and strength.  Fitness is not something you can develop overnight and the more time you are away from scheduled exercising, the longer and harder it is to get back in shape.

Aerobic exercises not only help improve your cardiovas‐cular fitness, they also help improve overall coordination and increase lower‐body strength.  Stair climbing is a good pre‐ski exercise because it works your heart, lungs and legs.  Other easy exercises you can do at home include:  stretching, push‐ups for upper body strength and jumping rope to strengthen the legs.  While walking is always good, it is not enough if you are planning to ski; and the older you are, the more important being in shape is to your ski trip enjoyment and safety.

When you get to the mountains, allow your body some time to adjust to the high altitude before doing any strenuous activity. Once you hit the slopes, if you end up with signifi‐cant aches and/or serious pain and discomfort that persists more than 24 hours, you probably should see a doctor.  Be‐cause of the altitude and low temperatures, your body’s nervous system slows down and you may not realize the se‐verity of your discomfort or injury.

Clearly, I am no MD and the above advise is not intended to replace advise of a medical professional.  You should con‐tact your doctor if you have more questions about this topic.

Welcome to 2011!!! Hope all of your holiday experiences were full of fam‐

ily, friends, and fun.  The next newsletter will bring you up to date on the fun that was had by the Snowdrifters attending the New Year’s Eve party.  I know that  the committee members of Debi Young, Connie Sanders, Gretchen Gines and yours truly have been working hard to bring 2011 in with a “bang”.

Since I am an “old club gal” going to work at a  “new” job, I would like to have your help.  Our goal is to con‐tinue with “old”, successful activities, and sprinkle in a few new ideas to get other members interested.   For those who skipped the Hat Party, you missed the un‐usual hats, the great food, lots of dancing and the hospi‐tality of Dennis and Vickie Gowey. There was bowling with La Verne and Shirley, (aka Catie Somers and Stephanie Young), and enough cannot be said about the Halloween party at Debi and Tim Young’s haunted house.  The costumes, dancing, catered food, prizes, etc. were awesome.  Of course there were other activities and we want them to be continued.

I am sure that there are lots of fun things that we are missing??  If you have done something that you think would be great fun for the Snowdrifters, call or e‐mail me and let’s see if they can work!!!  We all do so much, I know there has to be a few new and fun ideas out there.

We all want to look back on 2011, smile and say “boy did we have fun”.  The Snowdrifters are already known for the fun we have.  Let’s get it started.

That would of course include the 5 days the San Diego Council enjoyed in Aspen, Dec 8‐14. We had a great group of 46 representing 4 San Diego Ski club plus Balboa Ski Club from LA Council and Castro Val‐ley from Bay Area Council. The weather was perfect, snowy and cold. Got in and out of Aspen in perfect style and I think all had a great time. Post Party an‐nouncement will be coming soon.

The Council is staying on the fast track in its sup‐port of our lovely J2 racer Alexas Wehsener, of our very own San Diego Ski Club. We continue to solicit support from any of you out there that would like to help and would be willing to contribute as well, either through the FWSA Foundation or the USSSA. Let me know if you have interest. Hey, my Mom has even con‐tributed, really!!

The Council Happy Hour at the Hotel Del in Coro‐nado on December 16th went swimmingly. We packed the place and had a great time singing carols to finish off a fun evening.

If you haven’t visited the Council, FWSA or Federa‐tion web pages in a while you should probably put that on your To Do list. There is loads of interesting info on each. The Federation www.skifederation.org has been working hard bring its Resource Center documents up to date. Visit and see what you may be able to pick up as useful information. Also on the page is a long list of benefits available to each and every ski club member. To enter the members only area use the logon of “skiclub” and password of “member”.

Hello Snowdrifters: Wow, the holiday’s came up fast this year it was hard to

believe that this was our December meeting.  It was great to see everyone come out to enjoy each others company in the middle of getting ready for the Holiday Season.  We were missing a few people that were coming back from ASPEN.  I know that the snow was good and hope to hear about the trip in a few weeks at the next meeting.

This meeting was great because it gave us a chance to help the children with our donations to Toys for Tots again this year.  As everyone saw, we had a local Marine Corporal show up and talk a few minutes about this great charity.  During the meeting, we were introduced to our newest Board member Nora Cole who is taking over for Bob Smith as the activities director.  Afterwards Barry Cole our Vice President quizzed us on St. Patrick’s Day as a precursor to his trip in March.  Where he gave out prizes to the winner’s.  The meeting was ended on a great note from Nick about how in addition to the gifts that were donated to Toy’s for Tot’s, one of our members did a collection from the members and raised over 130 dollars, which was donated, to the charity.
