The Community Outreach Manager at Somerbyat St Vincent’s One Nineteen was giving a tour toa gentleman who kept using the word "facility"as they were talking. He shared that he wastouring various places for his mother, becauseshe was in need of further support, but she wasunhappy with him doing so. The CommunityOutreach Manager stopped him and asked "Letme ask you something. Would you rather yourmother live in a facility or in a community?" Thiswas a light bulb moment for the son whoresponded, "Oh. I need to change the way I talkto my mom."

The Terraces of Phoenix have found that in order to establish the members of their organization as experts in aging in the community, it is critical that they be seen and heard through media outreach. For example, their Health & Fitness Program Manager Aneil Koerper has been featured in three separate local newspaper articles within the past six months. Marge Pope, the Marketing Director at the community was originally contacted by a freelance writer for the Living Well Section of the Arizona Republic. Marge referred the writer to Aneil and after the first article was published, the writer continued to contact Aneil to serve as an expert source.

Clermont Park partnered with Touchtown to pilot anew tablet system for senior living communities. Toshare the success of the program, they created a videoto share with the residents, staff and community. Inaddition to simply sharing the success of the program, this video also combats largely held stereotypes thatolder adults have no interest in, or talent for, engagingwith new technologies. By developing this video andtelling its story, Clermont Park is doing its part tochange views on aging in the senior living field andthroughout the country.

On an annual basis, five to six resident champions from Quincy Village are featured in a 90-minute presentation to prospects. Each resident champion has 10 - 20 minutes to tell his or her story and show prospects what it is like to live at Quincy Village. Residents have the opportunity to discuss the talents and interests they have been able to share with the community. A popular discussion point is the resident-led clubs such as the popular model train club and disc golf club.

The Wesleyan Senior Living Community has been knitting hats for newborn babies in the local hospital since 2001. To date they have made and donated 841 hats! This project, named Hats by Warm Hands with Warm Hearts, not only provides a service to the local community, it has created new bonds between the Wesleyan residents. Residents who are part of this project actively encourage others to participate, even offering to teach them to knit so even more hats can be made!

This initiative has been promoted through the Wesleyan Arts & Crafts studio. Since introducing Masterpiece Living to the community, the Wesleyan team members have encouraged residents from all areas of the community to participate in the arts and learn something new – whether it be knitting or another endeavor.

Wesleyan Senior Living offers internships for students from the local college to help them gain experience with community projects. Recently, they had a Diet Tech student teach the 4-week Nourish class to residents. Not only did the residents enjoy learning about food labels and balanced diets, the intern gained first-time experience preparing a class and speaking in front of a group.

The class was promoted through newsletters, bulletin boards and the in-house TV. In addition, the intern set up an information display with a healthy snack to help encourage residents to sign up.

The participants were very pleased with the class and started asking "When are we going to see the nutritional information on our menus?" As a result, Wesleyan has now includes nutritional information on all of their dining menus.

Thirty-seven new courses were introduced, led by 26 volunteer ‘faculty members.’ More than 200 resident participants attended from all levels of care- that amounts to 2/3 of all Clermont Park residents.

Now, new courses are introduced each month through a College Brochure. When participants reach 3 or more credits in each 4 components (Social, Intellectual, Physical, Spiritual) they are eligible to graduate. Credits are tracked in Excel based on sign-in/sign-out sheets.

The Social Work Director at Westminster Village led a 30-minute presentation on bullying, explaining what it is, giving examples, and introducing a new anti-bullying mission statement she had created for the community. She discussed a zero-tolerance policy for staff and residents and encouraged resident participation and acknowledgment. It was a great opportunity to have residents listening to an issue that is relevant without being reprimanded or individually called out on bad behavior.

The Social Worker utilized a Senior-to-Senior Bullying Powerpoint presentation by Gloria M. Gutman, PhD, OBC, expert on elder abuse, to create her own presentation.

Follow up will include a Learning Circle with staff and residents. The Social Work Director will also be giving a web-based tutorial for all Presbyterian Senior Living campuses.

For the first staff training following their Masterpiece Living Launch, the team at Westminster Woods at Huntingdon wanted to not only review foundational training, but also focus on the role each team member plays in providing an environment of successful aging for the residents and for themselves. Team members from different departments were combined for one hour seminars that were ‘team taught’ by the NHA, Social Worker, Fitness Director, Community Life Director & IL Services Director.

Each team member received a small laminated card featuring the MPL logo and the SIPS on the front with a variety of responses to “What is MPL?” on the back. Discussions about the seminars were also held at senior staff meetings. The training seminars were promoted through flyers throughout the staff areas in the community.

Ware Presbyterian Village recently hosted a “Bring Your Child to Work Day” event for the children of their team members. Administrator Ron Patti did a presentation to 15 children between the ages of 8 and 16 about ageism, aging myths, successful aging and the 4 MPL components. The children were quizzed on what they thought older adults shouldn’t do and residents debunked the stereotypes. They also asked the children how they were aging successfully and taught the students that successful aging is for every age.

After the event, one eighth grade student approached Mr. Patti and complimented him on the well thought out, organized presentation.

Next year, the Ware team plans to have more opportunities for the students and residents to engage with each other throughout the day.

Clark-Lindsey made the team member trainings their own by combining and personalizing MPL-provided PowerPoint presentations and assigning different sessions to training teams. The first team kicked off training by combining Introduction to Masterpiece Living with Dynamics of a Culture Change. Interactive opportunities included closing with each attendee choosing one word or short phrase that summarized what Masterpiece Living means to them.

Teams of three were assigned to lead a 45-minute session on each of the four components of MPL. Two sessions were held in the morning and two in the afternoon with a complimentary meal in between.

To mix up the training experience, each component session was hosted in a different room within the community, allowing team members to move from on space to another as they advanced through the training.

Instead of simply telling them about each component, the teams were challenged to create an experience in each of the spaces.

Somerby at St. Vincent's One Nineteen wanted to create an opportunity for the departments of the community to honor residents in their own way during Resident Appreciation Week. Each department was responsible to hosting an event for the residents each day of the week that involved residents from each level of living. There was friendly competition between the departments that resulted in a stunningly successful event.

Dining kicked off the week with a special brunch and included a carving station each night at dinner for the rest of the week. Marketing hosted a sock hop and Lifestyles, in partnership with Administration, hosted a dance with a swing band one evening. Maintenance held a car wash outdoors for residents with cars and then a scooter/wheelchair wash inside. Housekeeping, in partnership with Maintenance, hosted a cookout and then sang a song of gratitude to the residents to the tune of The Supreme's 'Baby Love'.

The week wrapped up with the 100th birthday of a resident. A former sous-chef requested to come back to the community for the resident's birthday in order to perform a traditional Thai dance titled 'The Dance of Benediction' in her honor. One of the required measured is an average of 70% participation in the Lifestyle Reviews for IL and AL/PC. In 2014, teams were encouraged to have 9 resident led programs per month. In 2015, teams are encouraged to continue momentum with resident led programming and are additionally working to have 10 blended programs per month. Jacqueline Foss, Executive Director of The Birches AssistedLiving, was inspired by the message she heard at theMasterpiece Living Lyceum to focus on a resident’s strengthsand interests when moving into assisted living—instead of thechallenges that may have brought them there.

Jacqueline’s goal is to have a conversation with each newresident within 24 hours of moving in and create anannouncement that is shared with team members. (Withpermission, this could also be shared with other residents.) Theannouncement focuses on the resident’s interests and goals forhis/her new life at The Birches and is organized around the fourcomponents. This helps focus the staff on the person as awhole, not just his/her needs.

In the future, Jacqueline hopes to start having theseconversations and building close relationships with newresidents before they move in. The Birches

Changes weremade to the community’s policies and handbook and nowresidents in personal care can enjoy the company of their bestfriends.

Westminster Village in Allentown offers several formats of a crucial step in the Review Process-

Follow-up Sessions.

1. The Director of Community Life facilitates open follow-up sessions on a monthly basis.

2. Additionally, as part of the MPL Review process, all managers take part in the facilitation of 4 group follow-up sessions. The group sessions are based on the four components of Masterpiece Living.

3. Individual sessions are available upon request.

The team takes advantage of all follow up and coaching resources available to them on the Masterpiece Living website and works together to overcome scheduling challenges. They have found that participation plummeted when there were competing programs/events. By working together to schedule the follow up sessions, participation has grown.

The Stayton at Museum Way holds a “Crafting for the Community" project where they work on a craft that benefits an organization out in the local community. Recently, they chose the Warm Place, a non-profit organization that provides free grief support for children. A resident co-founded the organization in 1989. Residents were eager to get involved. One resident, who is not usually very active outside of her room, heard about the organization and wanted to learn more. The team was thrilled when she offered to represent the Nursing Services residents in the delivery of the crafts so she could be more involved.

The coaching team at Ware Presbyterian Village is made up of one team member and two residents. In preparation for follow-up sessions, the team watched the coaching and integration videos. After the MPL Reviews had been completed, the resident champions hand delivered feedback reports to the resident participants. The report packet contained a description of the follow-up sessions and information about the successful aging initiative being implemented throughout the community. As they handed out the packets, the resident champions encouraged each resident to come to the follow-up session with a goal in mind. The follow-up sessions were described as a good conversation between friends and neighbors.

The residents at La Loma Village have always expressed an interest in lifelong learning. Although programs like “The Great Courses” were popular, it quickly became evident that residents wanted more. In 2014 La Loma University (LLU) was created to meet this need. A “Design Committee” of residents selects the course material, contacts potential presenters, partners with other communities, writes course descriptions, creates a course catalogue, runs an orientation and coordinates class enrollments! The committee also manage the budget for presenting and program feesLLU has been a huge success. Classes are often held three times per week to meet the demand and there has been a great deal of positive feedback about the quality of programs and the highly knowledgeable presenters. The community plans to use feedback surveys to further enhance the University’s offerings.

When Sue Deobil, Sales Director at Westminster Woods set a goal to create a community newsletter, she wanted to focus on more than just the events going on in the community. Sue was interested in capturing the stories of the people living and working within the community. Using the components of MPL as her guide, Sue uses the newsletter to share stories about residents who have reached personal goals and to inspire residents who might be looking to make a change or try something new.

When The Barrington of Carmel was ready to unveil Masterpiece Living, they could think of no better way than to have their resident champion put on a presentation at their monthly fireside chat. Their resident leader started the debut by explaining each fundamental concept of Masterpiece Living: culture, lifestyle, process vs. program, successful aging, and resilience. Quoting “When one creates an outstanding painting or sculpture we call them masterpieces, so it seems logical that when a process is designed to optimize, enrich, and enhance our mature adult lifestyles and make a positive change in our community culture, it should be called Masterpiece Living”. Following the introduction, four resident champions described each pillar and gave examples of programs that fell into each category.

To keep the Masterpiece Living momentum going after launch, The Barrington decided to conduct the Mobility Review during active aging week. In addition to the 10 physical activity stations, they created four resting stations at which residences could learn more about each of the Masterpiece Living components. At the physical station there was a Swiss exercise ball, exercise books, healthy granola and fruit water. At the intellectual station, there were word puzzles, games such as Scrabble and Sudoku, and a puzzle. At the social table, there was a conversation ball and games including catch phrase. Finally, at the spiritual table, there was a list of local parks in the community, yoga & meditation information, as well as tips on how to de-stress. Each rest station was manned by a resident champion who provided information on each component and answered questions. They finished up the evening with a community BBQ where mobility review participants wore the MPL t-shirts they earned. Participants also wear their shirts every Monday!

The resident champions at Ware Presbyterian Village are active and engaged in the successful aging culture. The community created a Masterpiece Living work plan and taskforce groups to complete each goal. Each taskforce is made up of team members and a resident representative. The coaching/follow-up session taskforce residents watched the Masterpiece Living coaching videos and led the follow-up sessions. One resident champion is also a member of the Presbyterian Senior Living Board of Directors.

CENTERS FOR SUCCESSFUL AGING

Clark-Lindsey Village utilized their entire 15-person Masterpiece Living Design Team to ‘divvy up’ the different CSA Application criteria sections. The entire group would meet each month for a 90-minute meeting to share progress on existing goals as well as set three new goals :

(1) Goal due in two-weeks(2) Goal due by next meeting(3) Goal due in two months

Team members sought support from fellow team members and residents in completing their criteria assignment. This form of organization and accountability was certainly a key factor in Clark-Lindsey’s successful application for the Centers for Successful Aging Certification in 2014.
