Outram School Newsletter Volume 3 Number 10 – 28 September 2017 OUTRAM SCHOOL VISION – A school where children strive for excellence, love learning, develop their passions and reach their potential Dear Parents Tēnā koutou, kia ora koutou katoa Student Council I want to recognise and thank the 2017 Student Council for the initiatives they have undertaken this term. My first thank you obviously relates to last Thursday nights school disco. I was impressed with just how hard the students worked in getting everything ready for the night and, after a big day, they were back to clean up in the morning. On the night, the council did an excellent job with all the different activities for both discos and in amongst it found time to enjoy themselves. The council working together, as one for a common cause, was very evident. The other council activity has been a little less public although greatly appreciated by those benefitting. Every Wednesday morning a crew of council students have turned up early to prepare breakfast for those who want to start the day with a good breakfast at school. This has been a big commitment. Next term our Key Competency focus is on ‘participating and contributing’. Our younger students will not have to look too far to see excellent examples of this competency in action. Disco Photos Those signed up to School Stream will have received a message on how to access the school disco photo (low res) proofs with a form to order photo prints. A paper copy of the information has been available in the office for children to collect if required. If you have not seen the proofs go to the ‘Newsletter’ page of the school website and open either the Google or Dropbox link. A link to the School Stream order form can also be found. Photos can be ordered up to the first Friday of the holidays but only those with a matching bank payment will be processed. (Payment can also be made to the office tomorrow.) There are some awesome photos of your children. Chromebooks On Tuesday, Amber Paterson and Jason Beulink, Noel Leeming, presented information on the school’s Chromebook initiative along with an opportunity to take up a BYOD Chromebook. For those who were unable to attend, some information is included in this week’s newsletter. Information on the Noel Leeming offer can be collected from the office. I do want to stress, all Year 5 to Year 8 students will have equitable access to the school’s Chromebooks irrespective of whether or not they take up the offer of a BYOD device. CAPES Assembly Much of my week has been spent preparing the awards for this Friday’s CAPES assembly. Joe Grace and Ruby-May Lane will be our guest presenters. A large number of students are receiving awards this week including three All Round Gold recipients. I hope as many parents as possible can join in our celebration at the earlier time of 2.15 pm. Have a fantastic two week break with your children; we will see you all back on the 16th October. Nga mihi nui

Pilot Programme to Empower Pre-Teens/Teens - Update Thank you for the positive response to this programme being offered. Spaces are beginning to fill so if your daughter is wishing to attend please get in touch so I can include them on the list. I understand that Thursday evening may not be the most suitable time for everyone. If you were wanting your daughter to attend but Thursday doesn’t suit, you are welcome to register your interest anyway and I can keep you informed of opportunities in the near future. If you have any questions at all feel free to contact me, either via email [email protected] or via phone 4861848/0273730035. Many thanks Kerry Kakahi

Congratulations to Erica Wilden who has been awarded a University of Otago Alumni scholarship to participate in the 2017 Marine Studies Centre Gifted and Talented programme. Erica has been working with other Year 7 / 8 students from across Otago at the newly refurbished Portobello facility on a marine research project. Tonight she will be presenting her findings. I look forward to attending this special occasion.

Chromebooks for the Children in the Senior School including the 2018 Year 5 children

Thank you to the parents who were able to attend our Chromebook meetings this week, it was great to chat to you all. For anyone that would like more information or missed the meeting, I will be available on Pet Day in Room 4 to chat to you about our Bring Your Own Device scheme. We may also have another information evening in Term 4. Noel Leemings Crawford Street currently have a package deal which is a fantastic price. There is an information booklet available at the office with the deal. If you are purchasing your Chromebook please do not set it up at home first, it is vital that it comes to school to be set up first as the children are using Google for Education. If you are purchasing from Noel Leemings please let them know that you are from Outram School. We will be having bulk set up dates so if you purchase by these dates your machine will be dropped off at school and I will set them up for you. Please let me know if I am to release the Chromebook to your child or to hold onto it for you to collect. By having bulk set up dates it makes everything run a lot smoother for setting them up rather than having them trickle in throughout the term. The dates are Week 1 Term 4 (17 Oct), Week 4 Term 4 (7 Nov), Week 8 Term 4 (8 Dec). We will then have dates for 2018. If you would like any further information about Chromebooks or our Chromebook Bring Your Own Device scheme, please contact me [email protected] Amber Paterson

Thank you to the team at Atmos

SWIM SEASON IS FAST APPROACHING!!

The Outram Pool Committee have worked hard over the winter months to have our wonderful community pool ready for your use. Keys for the pool will remain at the cost of $65 per family, with a refund of $10 when the key is returned at the end of the season. Pool keys will be available from the Outram School office from Monday 16 October (the first day of Term 4), the season will run until late March/early April 2018. NO KEYS WILL BE ISSUED BEFORE THIS DATE There is a key-holder's contract to be read and signed by an adult responsible for each family. These are important guidelines around safe and responsible use of our community pool. Anyone wishing to go on the pool cleaning roster, will get a $10 discount off the key price. We are also keen to hear from prospective new committee members!! If interested in finding out more, contact Kerry Kakahi 486-1848 Swimming lessons for Term 4 are almost full, so get in quick if you want your child to learn the valuable life-skill of swimming and water safety. Contact Donna 486-1875 The pool is closed to the public on Tuesday's and Thursday's from 3 - 5pm for private lessons. Outside of these times, come and enjoy the pool with your family as we head into another fantastic Taieri Summer!! Looking forward to seeing you at the pool!! From your friendly pool committee

Here are some colour poems written by Room 7 students

Black

The soft black fur was flowing through my fingers

Around me the noise of little high pitched yaps of excitement rang in my ears,

I saw a glimpse of a little tiny black puppy running on the soft green grass,

I felt wind hit my legs as a black labrador puppy runs between my legs,

I smelt the strong scent of puppy treats scattered all over the lawn,

A flavour filled piece of black liquorice in my mouth,

I remember Ellie's puppies at a few months old.

By Bella

Blue

As I walked onto the sand I could hear waves crashing on the shore,

I looked up and I saw the bright blue sky spreading on top of the Earth,

I walked down to the water and I felt it, it was nice and cold,

I walked out in the water and I could smell the saltiness,

I crashed over and I could taste the salty water rush down my throat,

When I stood up I felt cold and wet.

My memory is when I crashed underwater at the beach.

By Mitchell

Blue

I walk into the stadium and see tall blue people creeping from the side of the stage,

I smell the forest air trapped inside the stadium, making me feel adventurous

I taste the cool blue water flowing down my throat,

I feel like this moment is never going to end, I am energised and excited

I listen to the water putting out the lava at the end of the show going “Shhh”

Memories of going to Christchurch to see ‘Avatar the first flight’.

Yellow

When I walk outside on a sunny day I can hear singing birds in the trees,

The pollen sweeps past my face as I sneeze,

The heat smashes down on us making our backs turn red,

I walk to the garden and all I can smell is the aroma of the bright yellow daffodils,

I am biting into a crunchy, sour pear that I am having for a snack.

Memories of Spring

By Flynn

Summer-yellow

The bees flying around in the garden in the summer breeze,

The bees are buzzing like jet planes flying round the place up and down

Mum passes me the sticky pineapple, its softening in my mouth

The sticky juicy juice running down my arm and hand like a waterslide,

Dandelions with the nice flower scent flowing in the breeze,

Memory of being outside on a summer day.
