The UCSD Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program is based in the unique civicscientific, and biotechnology environment of SanDiego, and features highly diverse clinicalexperiences with expert Faculty. In addition to excellence in clinical training, our program offers diverse opportunities for laboratory, translational and clinical research. Our UCSD and affiliated Faculty and institutions represent the highest level of academic medicine, and excellence in medical science.

Clinical experiences include: • Training at UCSD and VA outpatient continuity

rheumatology clinics• Inpatient consultation experience at the UCSD

Medical Center, Thornton hospital, JacobsMedical Center, Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center,VA Medical Center, and Rady’s Children’sHospital

• Formal curriculum in musculoskeletal ultrasound,including rheumatology ultrasound clinic

• Elective rotations in radiology, medicalorthopedics and sports medicine, systemicdisease-centered dermatology clinic, metabolicdisease /osteoporosis clinic, pain medicine,advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound, andtelemedicine

Applicants interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine, and M.D, Ph.D. applicants are encouraged to apply. Our research strength is uniquely broad in innate and adaptive immunity, inflammation, signal transduction, synovial and cartilage biology, vascular biology, stem cell biology, metabolic arthropathies, and multiple areas of translational research. These include immunopharmacology, computational translational biology (informatics, genomics, proteomics), epidemiology, biomarkers, clinical trials, outcomes, health services research and development, and global health (see below, and Division website). The basic research program includes joint training opportunities with affiliated faculty at La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology, Sanford-Burnham Research Institute, and other local institutions and Divisions and Departments at UCSD.

Training resources for clinical, translational and health services research, and epidemiology includes the NIH-funded CTSA program, and CREST program

(crest.ucsd.edu) with opportunities for Masters of Advanced Studies or a Masters of Public Health degree in conjunction with San Diego State University School of Public Health.
