Local community radio show ‘Beats Per Minute’ is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month. The late night - early morning dance music program first hit the airwaves of 6UVS on Friday November 8th 1985, starting off with an epic 24 hour long broadcast.

The man behind the program, Colin Bridges has played a phenomenal amount of dance music over the last three decades providing a soundtrack for people who enjoy a late Thursday night or early Friday morning party vibe. Since the show began the university station has transformed into the independent community station RTRFM.

Bridges, a much loved member of the LGBTIQ community, always makes sure the music hitting the airwaves is extra camp around the time Connections is closing its doors, so everyone can hear some great tunes on their way home.

The show’s 30th anniversary edition was a camp outing with a disco version of ‘Over the Rainbow’ and a sing-a-long to the theme from The Golden Girls.

Beats Per Minute 2am -6am Fridays on RTRFM 92.1 or listen online at www.rtrfm.com.au

Drink the can of V, you’re going to need your energy, invite all your buddies over, put on Take That’s Greatest Hits, just play ‘Could It Be Magic” on repeat, if one of your buddies argues for a different track ‘Relight Your Fire’ is acceptable, hey LuLu, but if they want anything else – give them the other copy of the CD and tell them to rack off and find a lamer party, rip of the sleeves of the checked shirt, put it and the denim shorts on, cover your eyes in dark eye shadow so you look like an owl, grab the Ouija board – see if you can contact Judy Garland, rip off the checked shirt, just go topless, cover yourself in glitter, leave the house.

MathasArmwrestling Atlas

Slowly over the last year Mathas has been releasing tracks from this album and they’ve all been first class from ‘Nourishment’ with Abbe May, ‘Doctorshopping’ to ‘Stone Cold Sober’ with Empty. The album maintains the quality from start to finish. Mathas has a lot to say, he’s a commentator and a story teller, so this album needs repetitive listening to take in what he’s saying- the words fly by at breakneck speed. The mix of sounds on this album are as much as part of its charm as the lyricism, it’s a great mix of classical violins, odd swirly sounds, choirs and the unexpected syncopation of beats. First rate.

Le1f – Umani/Water we can’t wait for Le1f’s debut album ‘Riot Boi’, and we love this new tune focusing on transgender issues Saint Germain – Sittin’ Here had to believe it’s 15 years since he released new music, this mix of jazz grooves and African vocals in divine Joni and the Moon – Tarantella this local band are so hot right now Dirty Chai - Latte Art a great collaboration between local artists Catlips’ Katie Campbell and Ham Jam’s James Ireland Phil Stroud – Yemaja flipside to his ‘Forrest’ 12inch on local label Good Company, percussive, meditative and contemplative Arca – Vanity if barbaric aliens made tunes maybe this is how they’d sound Seahawks – Islands

(Mike Simonetti’s Shipwrecked with Seakhawks Mix) it’s really subtle and laid back, chill out, relax your mind Lonely Boy – Mixed Signals danceable grooves to make you move The Communards - Don’t Leave Me This Way (Mega Mix) because everyone needs a 22 minute long version of a camp disco classic Dare 2B Dif’rent – Stand Up for Your Love Rights a new take on the Yazz tune from the ‘80s: an anthem for equality!
