• Two components: – Liberal Learning Outcomes (LLOs)– Program Outcomes

• LLOs – Created in 1996 by faculty vote– Designed by the faculty over the next 5 years – Implemented in 2001– NOT a gen ed program! – Liberal Learning Outcomes overseen by faculty “Roundtables” – Courses carry “icons” or “portfolio-building” designations

Citizenship

• Definition: The rights and responsibilities associated with social, political, and economic communities that an individual demonstrates as an engaged, knowledgeable member of a society

• Competencies: – Civic Literacy (1.1): graduates demonstrate an understanding of social, political

and economic institutions and use their own experience and understanding as a basis for comparing others [foundational]

– Historical Literacy (1.2): graduates demonstrate an understanding of historical patterns in human civilization and their relationship to the present [midlevel]

– Global Literacy (1.3): graduates demonstrate an awareness of social, political, economic, and cultural implications [midlevel]

– Civic Involvement (1.4): graduates demonstrate active and responsible citizenship [advanced]

Creativity

• Definition: Creativity is the process of innovation, generating original ideas or making new connections among existing ideas.

• Competencies: – 3.1 The graduate is able to critique the creative product in

traditional creative discipline [foundational]– 3.2 The graduate engages in the study or production of a

body of work [midlevel]– 3.3 The graduate demonstrates innovation in the major

[advanced]

• Foundational: Humanities courses (1XX)

• Mid-level: American Popular Music, Photography, Drama (NL); Literature in Film (L)

Critical Thinking

• Definition: the process of reflection, reasoning and imagining, through which the individual willingly, systematically, and habitually examines and explores information, problems, issues, beliefs, and social constraints

• Competencies:

– Demonstrate an attitude of intellectual inquiry

– Demonstrate information literacy

– Demonstrate critical, analytical, and reflective thinking skills [Metacognition]

• Competencies:

– Demonstrate an understanding of their ethical beliefs and the ethical beliefs of others

– Demonstrate the ability to identify ethical conflicts

– Demonstrate the ability to make ethical decisions

Inquiry

Definition: the application of concepts and tools to create, verify, and communicate new knowledge.

Competencies:

6.1 The graduate will understand and apply basic principles of science and mathematics.

--6.1M The graduate demonstrates understanding and competence in applying the fundamental theories and laws of mathematics. [Foundational Level Mathematics: 1 experience]

--6.1S The graduate demonstrates understanding and competence in applying the fundamental theories and laws of science. [Foundational Level Science: 1 experience]

 6.2 The graduate will analyze and interpret data in a variety of contexts using mathematical and scientific principles. [Mid-level: Application of Mathematics and Science: 1 experience]
