"Out, Out ..." is published in 1916.

It tells the story of a young boy who dies after his hand is severed by a "buzz-saw".

The poem focuses on people's reactions to death and life.

The poem was based on a true event that occurred in April 1915. Frost's friend’s son lost his hand to a buzz saw and bled, so that he went into shock, dying in spite of his doctor's efforts.

Frost uses personification in his poem. For example the buzz saw is described as a living thing who can snarle, rattle, and leap out of the boys hands.

Aim and Literary Devices in Poem

Frost concentrates on the innocence and passivity of the boy who is like a responsible adult.

The last line is about the soldiers who continue killing despite the dead bodies surrounding them.

The title of the poem is an allusion to William Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth ("Out, out, brief candle ...").It refers to how unpredictable life is.

In this poem, some figurative language including onomatopoeia, alliteration, imagery, and many others is used.

I think the most important and striking lines in the poem is in last line.

«Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs.»

It refers to many thing such as life, injusctice, and the cruel facts.
