In spite of thunderstormsearlier in the day and thethreat of further rain, over 150benefactors braved the annualparty hosted by Christopherand Lotty James at their homeat Eardisland.

‘We have been tremendouslyfortunate over the years withthe weather,’said GlynMorgan, Chief Executive,‘andwith the numbers we have tohost through our pledgedgiving and legacyprogrammes, it would beimpossible to contemplateaccommodating all those weinvite inside anyone’s home. When, ten minutes before thestart of the party, a massivethunderstorm passed over, including there being alightening strike in a

‘The year offers them manyopportunities to experience lifein a cathedral and, in particular,at the heart of its music making. In addition to lots of newrepertoire they will alsoexperience the complexity ofmanaging a busy diary, balancing the demands ofspecial events against singing ofthe Daily Office, and of workingas an integral part of a team.’

The music scholars, who eachreceive a scholarship along withtheir housing, are funded by anumber of trusts andindividuals. If you would beinteresting in supporting thisnew generation of young singersand organists through ourpledged giving programme, witha one-off gift or with a legacypledge, we would be delightedto hear from you as additionalfunding is needed.

Four new young faces haveappeared in the musicdepartment with this year’smusic scholars having beenwelcomed. Charles Maxtone-Smith (organ), Matthew Farrell(alto), Chris Nehaul (tenor) andFelix Wareing (bass) have settledinto St Ethelbert’s House, alegacy gift to the Chapter fromthe late Esther Poole-Hughesand which was refurbished bythe Friends of HerefordCathedral with a further giftfrom Esther, who was a longstanding member of the Friends.

‘It is always a joy to have theseyoung musicians join us at thestart of the autumn term,’saidGeraint Bowen, Director ofMusic,‘not least as we knowthat it will be a wonderfulyear for them to developmusically and personally beforewe send them on their waynext summer.’

tourism organisations andalso with the cathedral’svarious national partners.

‘We are also delighted thatGlyn was willing to take onthis new challenge,’said theDean,‘and that the trusteeswere willing to help us look athow the cathedral structurecould evolve and change. Itoffers us both a number ofexciting opportunities inhow we develop ourrespective work.’

‘I am sure that we will need tochange, review and tweak thestructure as we move forward, not least as to ensure thatGlyn has the support that heneeds, but working together, and along with the Friendsand Mappa Mundi Trust, Iknow we will be able to meetthe challenges of the future.’

Glyn was installed in a specialservice in early Septemberalong with Dr Charlotte Berry, the new Archivist, and SamBayliss, the new counter-tenorlay clerk.

In midsummer it wasannounced that the Trust’sChief Executive GlynMorgan was also to be theChief Executive for theCathedral Chapter and to betheir Chapter Clerk, ahistoric role as the senior laystaff member.

‘We are delighted that Glyn isable to take on theseadditional duties,’saidRhoddy Swire, TrustChairman.‘While it isessential that the Trustremains independent we arealready seeing the benefits ofjoint thinking and the sharingof resources for both theChapter and the Trust.’

While many will now seeGlyn carrying out hisceremonial duties as ChapterClerk, the majority of his time, which will be split betweenChapter duties and the Trust, will be to coordinate businessplans and strategies, fundraising and to lead onexternal relationships with thelocal business community,

‘However, the storm passed byand all who were able to joinus, were able to enjoy thestunning gardens and thecompany of friends.’

Plans are being made for nextyear’s party which we hope willbe announced in the springedition of the newsletter. If youwould like to become one ofour benefactors please join ourpledged giving programme, orlet us know if you have includedthe cathedral in your Will or ifyou intend to do so.Yoursupport is very muchappreciated and it is a pleasureto be able to bring our keycontributors together onceeach year.

Have you ever thought ofgiving the cathedral its ownChristmas present? Many of usenjoy coming into the cathedralfor carol services, concerts, theChristmas fair or for one of themany events we host for otherorganisations. Some come tosimply enjoy the peace andquiet, while reflecting on thepast year.

If you value the role that thecathedral plays in your life, both at Christmas andthroughout the year, why notgive it its own Christmas

Work on the restoration of thecovered walkway linking thecathedral to the cloisters is wellunderway and, thankfully, without too many ‘surprises’being found when the stonetiles of the walk were stripped. The timber work appears to bein good order and our plans forthe re-tiling, lighting of thecarved roof beams and theeducational programme areprogressing well.

‘The project has thrown upsome exciting finds,’said JoCatling, the learning andpublicity officer.‘One of theearly elements of the project wasfor volunteers and visitors tolearn more about bryophytes, the overarching term used formosses, lichens and other suchgrowths which had colonisedthe old tiles, some of whichwere unique to this roof.’

‘Care was taken to save selectedtiles from which the new roofwill be colonised by the mossesand lichens and which will allowus to maintain the biodiversityof the site. A small part of the

enabling our many visitors tohear what is going on.’

‘One interesting fact we havediscovered during the soundproject is that the coil inhearing aids only picks upthe signal if the receivers arehorizontal to the loop’stransmitter. I am afraid thatthis means that if you leanforward during prayers, youwill lose the sound.’

‘We are deeply grateful to theGovernment for makingthese funds available as partof the commemorationsmarking the First World War,along with our other funders, which have included theHeadley Trust and those whohave supported ourbroadcasting project’.

Not two subjects normallycombined but both projectsreceived their principalfunding through theDepartment for Culture,Media and Sport andChurchCare. The soundproject has now beencompleted other than 12months of ‘fine tuning’, whilethe lead roof works willfinish in the next few weeks.

‘These are two vitallyimportant projects, whichwill have a major impact onour care of the building andhow it is used,’ said theDean.‘The projects reflect theneed to keep such ancientbuildings watertight, whilealso enabling them to beliving buildings through

Sound and lead

St John’s Walkproject, but nevertheless animportant aspect.’

The roof top tours, run by someof the many volunteersengaged with the project, haveproved popular as, in addition tobeing able to view the rooftimbers at close quarters, it hasalso allowed visitors to look atthe Chapter House Gardenand St John’s Quad from anew perspective.

Over the autumn and wintermonths a number of specialtalks and events are beingplanned, many of which appearin the Diary Dates and otherswhich will appear on thewebsite as they are confirmed.Thank you to all who aresupporting this project – it is avery special part of the cathedraland this work will secure it forthe future.

Your Christmas present to thecathedral

present as you do your otherloved ones?

Each year the flower guilddecks the cathedral withflowers to celebrate Christmasand this year they will beincluding Christmas stars intheir arrangements to reflect athank you, a prayer or amemory. A book celebrating allthese memories will be placednear to the Shrine of StThomas the evening before thefirst carol service, when theShrine will be decked in glory.

Voluntary Choir on tourPeter Dyke, the director of the Voluntary Choir, led his team ofsingers to Germany during the October half term break.

‘We have always received a wonderful welcome,’said Peter.‘We alllove visiting Germany and the various churches are superb. We alsoalways receive the warmest of welcomes. It is a particular pleasure toperform at venues in our link diocese and to play a little part indeveloping these friendships.’

If you would like to know more about the voluntary choir, includinghow you might audition for this semi-professional group, pleasecontact Peter on [email protected] or 01432 374272.

Do you wish you could come toChoral Evensong on a regularbasis but never find the time, orHereford is just too far away?Would you love to hear the choirduring the winter months butyou can’t face going out in thedark? If so, keep watching thecathedral website.

Over the coming few monthswe will be launching the weeklybroadcasting of ChoralEvensong, which will be aservice recorded through thenew sound system during theprevious week or, (duringholidays) from our archives. Asour confidence grows with thesystem we hope to introduce thebroadcasting of other services, sermons and talks.

‘This will be an excitingdevelopment in how we shareour worship,’ said the Dean,‘and our ability to proclaim theGospel. Our music is one of ourgreat treasures and I knowmany people, whether throughhealth issues, physical

limitations or simply the rushof daily life are not able to joinus as often as they wouldlike and this will be awonderful opportunity forthem to listen in.’

My pledge tothe cathedral

I forgot everything but the voices of thechoir, echoing, it seemed, from above thehigh altar; I saw nothing but little flushesof pink and blue falling on the stonethrough stained windows. The organ of‘Hereford...’ is, as it should be, the voice ofthe cathedral: its calm sweetness places ahand over the spirit; and in this church, with the organ whispering through theaisles, the world and its problems seemover the hills of reality.
