Hi everyone, As I write this, the summer months are beginning to wind down with Labor Day right around the corner. There are still lots of activities and events happening, though. A bus trip to the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival, the preview of the upcoming ski trips and

the opening of the first of those trips, as well as the Volleyball Tournament just to name a few. For more information about these and other events, please refer to the Committee articles in this edition of LiftLine, as well as the club’s website. Speaking of the website, the new website with a fresh look is scheduled to be launched soon. If you like the new look of the LiftLine, then you’ll like the look of the club’s new website. The website team is soliciting testimonials from long-time members, new members and volleyball players on why they joined the OC Ski Club and what they love about it. Here’s my testimonial about why I joined the OC. My significant other (now my hubby) and I were looking for others to ski with and, while at the Ski and Snow Expo in 2009, came across the OC booth. A trip was being offered to Sugarbush for New Year’s Eve. We went to the next

President’s CornerGretchen RileyPresident

meeting for more information and joined the club so we could go on the trip. Since then, we have gone on other club trips and weekend buses and have had a great time. It’s been fun meeting other club members and you can’t beat the price. So, what’s your story? As the ski season begins to kick in, volunteers are always needed and welcomed. If anyone is interested, read thru this edition of the LiftLine for current needs (e.g. the Volleyball Tournament), look to the “Help Wanted” section on the new website, visit the Applicant/Membership table for up-to-date list of volunteer opportunities; or, as a last resort, an e-mail can be sent to me ([email protected]) or the VP’s ([email protected] or [email protected]). Additionally, links to the different Committee Chairs’ e-mail addresses can be found on the club’s website and in LiftLine. The September Board Meeting will be held on September 5th. Everyone is welcome to attend. Reminder: September is the last month of the summer meeting schedule. October 3rd will be the starting point for weekly meetings.

That’s it… I have had enough of summer. So “over it”. Let it just start

snowing already!

Well, no, just kidding. Some sun for another month or so is ok. I love fall

anyway (but, I do hate raking the leaves.) It’s just that. We. Are. Ready.To. Ski! The Bus schedule is pretty much complete, the trips are all in line with contracts, costs, Leaders and opening dates set.

It was certainly a summer to remember though. Beginning with so much rain, then so much heat and sun, then cold at night, and then back to sun and heat again. The summer of “weather indecision” for sure. I hope you all enjoyed and took advantage of the many activities the Club offered and those non-club sponsored ones too. All the activity does make the time fly though, and here it is, September! That means Seafood Festival in NH and Volleyball Tournament “Welcome to the Jungle Theme” at Maple Ridge. I hear there may even be a Paintball war in the works as well! The activities planned just never end.

BUT…pay attention, keep your eyes peeled here - in the LiftLine and - on the WEB, because TRIPS will be opening THIS MONTH. Leaders have been chosen by now and the first trips will open on September 18th! See the Trip info here in the LiftLine, or check it

out on the Web - (Oh, and maybe even on the NEW Website??!!) We are offering FOUR Western Trips this season, to four different Resorts, though three are located in Colorado. That’s 128 possible spots. They are all different, with different amenities, and each has possible skiing at more than one area. PLEASE make sure you read all of the Procedures regarding Trips and Trip sign ups so you are aware of what you need to do, what to bring to signups (Checkbook, Copy of Drivers License, MEMBERSHIP CARD - along with that of your spouse or roommate if you are signing them up), what TIME you MUST be there and what happens if we must use a Lottery System. We want to fill all of the trips to capacity (no, this year we cannot add on to any of the Western trips, we were limited on the seats by the airlines). We also need you to read the procedures yourselves so you know you have the correct information. Some things have been updated and someone you ask may not be aware of all of the updates.

Come to the Meeting Wednesday September 18, 3013 and find out about all of the Trips, or sign up for Okemo, Breckenridge or Telluride! Ask your questions in advance because the night of sign ups can be chaotic and the Trip Leader (and any other assistants or volunteers) will be busy. Always best to arrive prepared. If you have questions, now’s the time to ask. Email [email protected] or [email protected] and Joan and I will be happy to provide any advanced information you need. See you all there!!

Hello All, I hope you are enjoying summer and all of the fun it has had

to offer. As I write this it certainly does not feel like summer. It feels more like October! Just a bit of foreshadowing-

summer will be back with its sunny, 80 degree days.

I hope you have purchased your ticket for the Hampton Beach Seafood festival. If not, you will have to wait until next year to go. Last year it was about 80 degrees and sunny during the day. It did cool off at night, but that was ok. It gave me a chance to wear the new sweater that I bought there. If you are going on the trip bring a jacket as well as your bathing suit. You may need it! It is sure to be a fun day!

I also hope you have considered volunteering to help out at the volleyball tournament. Please see or contact Paula Moir if you would like to help out. The dates help is needed are September 20-22, with the tournament being on the 21st. Thank you in advance!

I am looking forward to seeing our new website which should be up and running just before the volleyball tournament. Stay tuned for that. I am also looking forward to the September Happy Hour which is at the Union Inn in Schenectady. The date is Wednesday the 25th. Check the website and LiftLine for complete details. Enjoy the last few weeks of summer. See you out and about.

Hand signals in volleyball, also known as block signals, were first created by volleyball legend Randy Stoklos during the 1980’s. They are usually made behind the back

by the partner of the serving player to indicate what type of block should be used against an attack from the opponents. The signals help the partners communicate while concerning their plans from the other team.

BlockerThe designated blocker stands close to the net so she can intercept shots, but will sometimes drop back to defender.

Two fingersThe blocker plans to block the opponent’s angle attack - a hit made diagonally over the net.

Open handThe blocker will decide how to block based on it’s location, the opponent’s approach and arm swing. The partner must then defend the block.

Your fundraising committee is preparing to place orders for the 2013-2014 season and we’d like to know what you, the membership, would be interested in having available for purchase. Last season, we had a couple of suggestions, but we need more input.

Here are some old and new thoughts: clothing and apparel such as vests, knit caps, ball caps, jerseys, T, polo, or button-up shirts, sweatshirts or sweatpants, gloves, mittens, socks. Drink items such as travel mugs, water bottles, beer/coffee mugs, beer, wine, or shot glasses. We already have luggage tags, but other travel items like ski boots, sports bags, hydration backpacks, “carry-on” kits. Functional items such as ice scrapers, hand/toe warmers, sewing kits. Novelty or gift items like license plate frames, pens/pencils, mouse pads,

cell phone cases, mini-flashlights, sunglasses, carabiner hooks, clocks, picture frames, writing sets. Larger items like coolers and folding picnic chairs have also been brought up.

Those are just some ideas. Others are welcome. You can be specific or general. Also, tell us if you would be willing to pay a little more if we carried items of a higher quality. We’d like as much feedback as possible. NOTE: we can try, but we cannot promise or guarantee that we will be able to provide everything that everybody suggests. Please contact Jill Hayes ([email protected]) or Teddi Winn ([email protected]). We will be placing orders starting now and over the next 2-3 months if necessary, so send us your suggestions ASAP.
