ENID WORDSWORTH Q.S.M 19 November 1925 - 13 July 2019

Swimming Bay of Plenty mourn the passing of Life memberEnid Wordsworth. Thank you, Enid, for your years ofdedicated service. Enid epitomized what Swimming Bay ofPlenty strives to achieve and her tenaciousness, positively andsense of humor will be missed but forever remembered. Ourthoughts and prayers are with her family.

Enid’s involvement with Swimming spanned over 6decades. Enid was one of the driving forces and foundationMember to establish the Greerton Amateur Swimming Clubback in 1958.

It was at this point that Enid’s legacy in swimming began.

Enid for many years instructed at club level concentrating onteaching budding swimmers to breathe in the proper manner.Enid worked tirelessly in establishing the club, the day to day running of it, and fundraising for the actualconstruction of the Greerton Pool – the club’s home base. She qualified as a Bay of Plenty RegionalTimekeeper in 1970 and later qualified as a Judge/Inspector of Turns. The 1974 Commonwealth Games inChristchurch saw Enid poolside at the Queen Elizabeth Complex officiating as a timekeeper. Enid wasalways poolside officiating at National Meets right up to 2006. She had officiated at Oceania Meets,Masters’ Meets both National and International, and Special Olympics Swimming Meets. Greerton AmateurSwimming Club had the benefit of her timekeeping skills at their domestic swim events right throughout theyears of their existence until her health started to fail. In 1980 Greerton Club honored Enid by bestowingupon her Life Membership of their club having already previously awarded her a Long Service Award. Enidalso served her club as a committee member for many years. Enid was extremely active at club levelattending most committee meetings passing on invaluable information from her immense experience andvast fund of wisdom.

At a Regional level Enid was the Patron of Swimming Bay of Plenty. She actively promoted swimming atall levels. At regional level, as well as officiating at practically every regional event and Championship Meetrun by the Region for many years. Enid also sat on several sub-committees. She was a RegionalExaminer of Timekeepers and the Convener of the Regional Examiners Committee and was also theConvener of the Awards Committee. She was also a member of the Regional Technical Committee. Enidserved as Bay of Plenty Regional Secretary from 1976 to 1980. She was a member of the Swimming Bayof Plenty Board in 1970 thru to the mid 1980’s.

In 1972 she was awarded the Bay of Plenty Service Award and in 1984 Bay of Plenty honored her with LifeMembership.

At a National level Enid was awarded the SNZ Service award in 1983 followed by Honors in 1994. Shewas one of the original members of the New Zealand Swimming Trust formed in 1991 and was elected toserve on the Trusts Committee in 2000. Enid was appointed to the SNZ Awards Committee in 1997 andfilled this role for many years. Enid served on the SNZ Board in 1984. She was awarded SNZ LifeMembership in 2009.

In 2002, Enid was awarded the Queens Service Medal for Community Service; this was in recognition forher valuable contribution to swimming.

Enid was dedicated, conscientious, much-loved and respected. Her service to our sport wastremendous. She inspired us all with her passion, dedication and hard work. She promoted this sport’smany values at public and grass roots level.

REST IN PEACE ENID

Our athletes have exhibited qualities that have not only helped them achieve their goals butalso brought success to our clubs and Swimming Bay of Plenty.

This season we have seen some extraordinary results from our athletes. We had a total of220 podium placings for the 2018/2019 season at National Competitions. This is quiteremarkable. Our competitive numbers remain stable but there has been quite a significantdrop in our overall membership particularly Club Swimmers. It is the Club Swimmers thatare the foundation and we urge Clubs to be creative on how to get athletes in the pool. Weneed our kids to “fall in love” with swimming. We need to ensure we engage, excite, entertain and provide a family friendly swimming environment. We need to adapt to thechanging needs of our children. We have a new generation of swimmers that we need toaccommodate for.

I would like to extend my gratitude to each of the Board members. Each Board member haswillingly brought their own expertise and experience and work tirelessly for the betterment ofour swimmer and swimming community. My appreciation and gratitude to you all. I wouldparticularly like to make special mention of Karen Nixon. Karen works quietly and efficientlyin the back ground to keep things running smoothly.

Swimming Bay of Plenty has been committed to the issues placed before us throughout theyear. We are on the eve of SNZ implementing a new Regional Constitution which will haveimpacts on our Clubs and how they currently operate. We have continued with ourrevitalization of our Swimming Bay of Plenty Brand and creating a better connection with ourmembers. We understand the importance of this and want our members to feel a part of us.We want our swimmers to see and experience our vision. This year we have provided allNational Representatives at our Awards Brunch with a branded towel and drink bottle. OurJunior Festival representatives were all issued with a branded T-Shirt.

In conclusion I have listed some highlights below and am looking forward to anotherproductive year. We must look at the whole picture of swimming. We are always open toideas and welcome input from clubs, coaches and members. There is still a lot to do.What are we doing that we should keep doing? or what is working? What are we doing that we should stop doing? Or what is not working? What are we not doing that we could introduce to improve our performance? Or what aresome new things we can do that will work.

The Junior League

To carry on with the success of the Inaugural Junior League in 2017/18 we continued withthis programme with the aim to promote inter-club competitions for junior swimmers aged 12and under and to encourage their progression in swimming and participation. Thank you toLiz van Welie Aquatics and Mount Maunganui Swimming Club for hosting Round One andTwo. We believe that this format for our Juniors works well and continue to get greatfeedback on the format.

The Senior League

This season we introduced the Senior League with a similar format of fast quick racing as inthe Junior League. The Seniors (13 and over) paid one flat fee and raced a maximum ofthree events. The coaching group believed the best format was in a 50m Pool whichbrought the Inaugural League to the 50m Pool at the Rotorua Aquatic Centre. It was awelcome return to a meet in the 50m Pool after many years’ absence, but the weather Godswere not kind. However, some good race practice was gained on starts and turns for thoseathletes leading into Nationals. We will be bringing the Senior League back this season.

Junior Camp

It is always hard to pick a highlight within the swimming season but our annual SBOP JuniorCamp is something we are very proud of. January 2019 was our 18th year and the mostsuccessful. 50 athletes gathered to learn about swimming technique, interact with coachesand swimmers, meet new friends, have an away-from-home experience and improve his/herswimming skills and endurance and a whole lot of fun in between. A special thanks toRiccardo. It was a privilege to watch him at work and see our athletes engaged.

Hosting the SNZ Junior Aquaknights Festival

We welcomed 32 Clubs and 340 athletes to Rotorua for the Swimming New ZealandAquaknights Festival (Feb 2018). It was a privilege to host these athletes, clubs, parentsand supporters. We have an exceptional relationship within our community, and this wasintegral to ensure we were able to deliver a great environment and a fun experience for all.We are looking forward to hosting the 2020 Junior Aquaknights Junior Festival.

Annual Awards Brunch

A fantastic turnout to our Annual Swimming BOP Awards Brunch. It was a privilege toacknowledge the achievements of our brilliant athletes, officials, coaches, teams, volunteersand supporters. What an immense contribution you all make to our sport.

Congratulations to all those officials who have completed and gained their assessments thisyear.

There has been a positive change, with existing technical officials choosing to up skill invarious positions, both with BOP and Swimming NZ.In the past 12 months we have completed 48 assessments in total and have 6 JOS/Refereesin training.

The focus of our technical committee is to encourage our existing team of officials to improvetheir skills, both at BOP and Swimming NZ levels. To do this, we encourage you to approachand talk to our assessors about what you would like to do and where you would like to be.

We would also like clubs to bear in mind that our assessors are more than happy to holdgroup tutorials on all position’s trainees would like to aspire to. This is a positive way to getnew swimmers parents involved as timekeepers etc from the start.

It is encouraging to see that officials are now using the BOP technical email to inform us ofpositions they cannot fill once the schedule of appointments is out. This allows us time tomake other arrangements rather than arriving at the meet and not having positions filled.

Thank you to all our officials, both local and from outer regions who have assisted at ourmeets over the past year, it is rewarding to us as a committee when we have local officialsand officials from outside regions approach us at a meet and ask if they can have a job.We look forward to seeing new faces on pool deck and completing many assessments overthe coming year.

After 5 long years working backwards and forwards with the Kawerau District

Council the councillors finally heard of the struggles that we were going through. As we

have not been heard in the past with in house management pushing us aside and not

wanting to hear our problems. So as a committee and whanau we decided to put in a

submission so the councillors were able to see where we were at. Carol

and Justin searched and found 86 emails/letters/correspondence that talked or

mentioned the our clubrooms. Over 20 supporting letters from our swimming whanau.

The councillors agreed to have a meeting to discuss where to next. We have had a

meeting with he Mayor, Deputy Mayor, KDC Engineering Officer and Chairperson of

and all the problems that we have had in the past are getting solved and settled.

Our XLR8 meet was a huge success again this year with entries reaching capacity

before the close off.

Keira and Toni performed well at NZ Short Course Championships coming home with 3

Golds, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals.

Club nights have been well attended and we are working to build the pathway from learn

to swim through to competitive swimming.

Whakatane has had a strong year on both the junior and senior competitive fronts. Our

junior swimmers picked up 33 placing at the 2018 BOP Junior Champs and 21 at the

Junior Festival. Seniors had an exceptional year with PB performances by all national

meet attendees and 32 top 10 rankings. These top performances yielded 5 National

placing. We have also added over 15 new competitive swimmers to our ranks this year

for further growth as our new squad structure reaches maturity.

Successful submissions on behalf of WASC to the Long-Term Plan at WDC to cover the

outdoor pool which results in more lane space for not only WASC but all user groups in

the Whakatane District.

WASC has seen squad numbers steadily increasing over the last year with the

introduction of two further squads to assist in the transition between junior and senior

development.

WASC held the first Swim Camp in recent times for all swim club members in November

2018. It was well attended with over half of all members attending. Lots of new skills

learned at the trainings over the 2 days. A junior swim camp is planned for November

2019 and a Senior Camp in early 2020.
