CLERGY MEMORIALS
William Theodore BachNovember 5, 1950 - September 15, 2015
The Rev. William Theodore “Ted” Bach was born in1950, the second of four boys to The Rev. Francis T. & Mary O. Bach in Windber, PA. When Ted was born his father had a good job with the Conemaugh & Black Lick Railroad Company in Johnstown, PA, but shortly after Ted began his schooling, his father felt the call to ministry in the Evangelical United Brethren Church in which he’d grown up. His family was active in the Scalp Level EUB Church in Ted’s early years. Ted’s great-grandfather served twice as a District Superintendent in the Evangelical Association denomination in western PA. The family sold the home in Windber, which had been his mother’s childhood home, and moved to Ohio where his father went to college and then seminary. Ted spend much of his growing up years in central and western Ohio. The family returned to western PA and Ted graduated from Connellsville Area High School. Ted tried to ignore his call to ministry for a number of years, having witnessed some of the negative side of ministry that his father experienced. But following graduation he entered United Theological Seminary.
While studying at seminary he met Lorelei M. Bach, a Methodist student from Harrisburg, PA who was a year ahead of him. Ted and Lorelei married in March of 1974 just before Lorelei’s graduation and first appointment in the Eastern PA Conference of The UMC. Ted would finish up his seminary studies at Eastern Baptist Seminary and the Lancaster Seminary. He received his first appointment to the former Cookman UMC, Columbia, PA in 1977. While serving there he was briefly a member of the Columbia School Board. He subsequently served as pastor of the Ross Street UMC, Lancaster; the Ackermanville UMC, Ackermanville; as Director of the Kensington Area Ministries where he pastored the St. Philips, the former Mt. Pisgah, and the Summerfield/Siloam UMC’s in Philadelphia; Trevose UMC, Trevose; the First UMC, Fairless Hills; the Holmesburg, and the former Bustleton and Johnson Memorial UMC’s in Philadelphia. Ted retired from active ministry in 2013, and the Scottsville UMC, Langhorne became his Charge Conference. He and Lorelei retired to Trevose, PA.
Ted was an avid reader, especially in philosophy, theology and history. He was concerned with social issues throughout his ministry and enjoyed serving at the soup kitchen at the Holmesburg Church. In addition to reading, he enjoyed fishing and doing crossword puzzles.
Ted is survived by his wife of 41 years, The Rev. Lorelei M. Bach, retired, son Sebastian T. Bach, his wife Sara, and their sons Jude and Stellen, as well as younger son, Jorge F. Bach, his wife Claudia, and their daughter Lindsey. He is survived by older brother David Bach, and younger brother Mark Bach and their families. A Service of Celebration of his life was held Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Scottsville UM Church, 2400 Brownsville Rd., Langhorne, PA.

Kenneth Leonard Beale, Sr.March 8, 1927 - May 14, 2016
The Reverend Kenneth L. Beale, Sr. was born on March 8, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA and left his earthly existence on May 14, 2016 from Ft. Washington (Estates), PA. He was 89 years old. Kenneth was an only child to parents – Leonard George and Queenie Elizabeth Beale (nee-Stubbs) – who were born in England … having come to America as youth. He was raised in the Eden Methodist Church by his single mother. After high school and a brief time at college, Ken enlisted toward the end of World War II in the U.S. Army achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the war, Ken graduated from Temple University and Temple’s School of Theology (cum laude). During his time at Temple, he was a chaplain at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital; and then Jefferson and Temple Hospitals. In 1942, Ken met Anna Carey, originally from Ellendale, DE, but now living in Philadelphia and attending Eden Methodist Church. Ken and Ann were married for 66 years and had two sons: Rev. Dr. Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. and Keith E. Beale – both of whom are serving in Christian ministry.
In 1950, Pastor Beale served Wesley Methodist Church; and later he pastored Mt. Hermon and then 22nd Street Methodist Churches. In 1954, he served Taylor Memorial Methodist Church. All of these churches were in Philadelphia, so when he was appointed to serve Jarrettown United Methodist Church in 1959, he felt that he was moving way out into the country. He served as Senior Pastor at Jarrettown until his retirement in 1992 (nearly 34 years). During that time, attendance at Jarrettown grew from about 100 to nearly 700. He oversaw the building of a new Fellowship Hall/Sunday School Building, a new Sanctuary, and a new Parsonage … and having ‘burned’ all the mortgages. He also was a chaplain at Abington Hospital for many years while at Jarrettown.
After Ken retired from Jarrettown and Eastern PA Conference of The United Methodist Church, he and Ann moved into the Gwynedd Estates (Ambler) and he became an associate pastor at Chalfont United Methodist Church (for 24 years), helping with the services and visitation. He continued to work as a chaplain at Abington, but mostly at the Lansdale location. Ann passed away March 4, 2014. He remained active in the church and hospital until his failing health in the fall of 2015 limited his ability to serve. He has 6-grand-children, some who have served in the military, and he has 8-great grandchildren. He was an avid reader, enjoyed vacations in Ocean City, NJ; but most of all he enjoyed meeting people and serving the Lord. He has touched countless lives, and now hears his Master saying – “Well done, My good and faithful servant!”
His funeral service was held at Jarrettown UMC, 1460 Limekiln Pike, Dresher, PA, on Saturday, June 4. In lieu of flowers, Rev. Beale requested that donations be made in his memory to the ministries of his two sons: CLC Ministries International, P.O. Box 1449, Ft. Washington, PA 19034 (www.clcusa.org) or Ft. Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation, 9031 Penn Ave So, Bloomington, MN 55431 (www.fortsnellingmcf.org).

William A. SharpNovember 25, 1920 - June 18, 2015
Most of you reading this know Rev. William A. Sharp as a friend and colleague, and as a pastor who tirelessly dedicated his professional life to the advancement of both the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of The United Methodist Church, and to each of the churches he served over the course of his long and distinguished career. As Bill Sharp’s daughter, I would like to share some thoughts about what knowing him was like for those of us in his family.
Dad showed us how to be loving and caring. The relationship he had with our mother, Jeanne Sharp, was tender and sweet. Our parents delighted in each other’s company. Throughout Mom’s long struggle with cancer Dad was a source of support, comfort, and strength not only for his beloved wife, but for the entire family. The words “in sickness and in health” which he’d said to his bride so many years earlier were not a hollow promise. He showed us the importance of commitment; support; compassion; and above all, love.
Even though we kids were at times a source of worry, and even disappointment to Dad, he never failed to show us his love and support. He taught by example the importance of being a loving spouse, and an engaged parent. Because he read the evening paper voraciously and always commented on issues of the day, all of his kids care about making the world a better place. Because his job was so demanding, it was on summer vacation that we came to know him best. No doubt because of the experiences we shared outdoors as a family, all of Dad’s daughters regularly pursue the inspiration and renewal we find by being out in nature. But also because his job was so demanding, Dad taught us to take pride in our work and to be responsible.

Dad always had a million friends. Up until the end of his life he had friends from his high school church group and an acapella choir, from seminary, friends who had been colleagues and parishioners; and he was always making new friends during his years at Evangelical Manor. For years after Mom’s death he spent most of his time with his very special friend, Dee Walker, who he referred to as his “lady friend,” and with whom he clearly shared a close emotional connection. The lesson we all took from the joy he found in friendship was be loyal to your friends, and nurture your friendships.
Dad loved and was proud of his kids, his grandkids, his great grandkids, his daughters’ spouses, and his extended family. He truly seemed to embrace and appreciate the diversity in his family. We enthusiastically agreed when at family events he would say, “I think we have a great family, don’t you?” Those of us privileged to be a part of Bill Sharp’s family appreciate him as well, for all he showed us, and taught us, and for all that he was.

Richard C. VoigtMarch 4, 1932 - February 19, 2016
Richard C. Voigt, 83, of Hershey, formerly of Bethlehem, Easton and Cornwall, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2016 at his residence. Born March 4, 1932 in Queens, NY, he was son of the late Edward and Viola (Marr) Voigt. Richard attended North Central College then Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, IL where he graduated as an Ordained Minister in 1956. He served as Pastor in eastern Pennsylvania churches until 1971 while he was attending Lehigh University and obtaining his M.A. in Philosophy. In 1968 he was invited to teach “Intro to Philosophy” at Northampton Community College (N.C.C.) in Bethlehem. He retired in 1996 as a full professor and received the title of Professor Emeritus. As the first philosophy professor at N.C.C., Richard established the department and developed the courses offered (Intro to Philosophy, Ethics, World Religion, and On Death and Dying). He also served on and chaired numerous committees including: Academic Standards; Curriculum (which he chaired for about a decade-which established the curriculum for a brand new college); chair of the College Council and the task force on Administration and Governance for Middle State accreditations; and numerous more.
He and a co-worker planned and conducted a one day conference at N.C.C. titled “Aging-the Process of Living”. The county, Council on Aging and other community leaders took part and invitee Maggie Kuhns, head of the Gray Panthers, was the keynote speaker. He was also a member of the Association on Death Education and Counseling. One semester was spent on sabbatical leave at Georgetown University and the Kennedy Institute of Ethics in Washington D.C. where Richard concentrated on ethical issues relating to death and dying. There he attended seminars on bereavement and grief and later did a four week study on “Ethics and the Social Sciences” under a grant from the National Endowment-Humanities held at SUNY Binghamton.
While living in the Lehigh Valley he spent one summer as Resident Ethicist at St. Luke’s Hospital, Bethlehem in the cancer ward; was a member of the executive committee of Visiting Nurses of Easton as an ethics specialist; an instructor to volunteers of Hospice of Lehigh Valley; and gave numerous lectures and seminars at various locations dealing with grief, dying, death and bereavement. Richard was not a chaplain at N.C.C., but had many opportunities to perform counseling and pastoral functions, mostly growing out of the course “On Death and Dying”. That course was (and still is) a requirement for students in the Funeral Service Department, but also drew many nursing students, students enrolled in other programs, and quite a cross section of people from the community. Though Richard spent his life as an educator and a man of God, he also had a passion for model railroading in his spare time. Survivors: His wife of 33 years, Linda; son, Douglas (Mary) Voigt;

Russell E. WaltersFebruary 22, 1930 - September 22, 2015
Rev. Russell E. Walters passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 20915 at home. He was a retired pastor of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of The United Methodist Church and the former EUB Church and had served for more than 50 years. He was the oldest of six children born to Ruby and Russell Walters on February 22, 1930 in Palmyra. He graduated from Lower Paxton High School class of 1947 as president of his class, Lebanon Valley College and United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
He and his wife Mary (Summy) were married on June 21, 1953 at Bethany Church in Palmyra. He served as pastor of Orwigsburg, Tamaqua/Coaldale, Wiconisco/Williamstown, Philadelphia Olney, Allentown Salem, Keokee Chapel/Swiftwater and after his first retirement he agreed to serve Canadensis part-time. He was the director of the Pocono Outpost camp on Beartown Road in Canadensis for its entire existence.
Russ was happy to serve his conference in many areas including Director of Childrens Work, Director of Camping, History and Archives and the Board of Trustees. While trustee he was in charge of the cemeteries which included finding caretakers for each of them. When he was not able to find someone he would pack up his mower and mow them himself. It became quite funny as all the trustees loved to call him and tell him they found another cemetery that needed another caretaker or him. He enjoyed every minute of it and spent a great deal of time making sure they were all in the best shape possible.
He loved working with wood and tin and using his skills to teach kids at camp how to make toys. He loved to joke and laugh and make others laugh as well. He believed in and promoted to the fullest the Heifer Project. He was also very much involved in helping to turn the Cresco Train Station into a museum and spent much time working on its completion. He was honored as “Citizen of the Year” in 2003 by the Barrett Township Rotary Club for his work in the community.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, who he called his first love and only love, three daughters, Debra Fulmer, Donna Beach, Diane Peters, and a son David, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters. His smile and laughter are gone and he is dearly missed.
The funeral service for Rev. Russell Walters was Friday, September 25, at Stroudsburg: Faith UMC, 1160 Clause Drive, Stroudsburg PA 18360.

Mother of three children, Susan, Cynthia, and Paul, she took her role of motherhood seriously but played it with joy and a saving sense of humor. When all were in school she went back to work eventually becoming a travel agent and later part owner of an agency. A person of great energy and enthusiasm, Helen loved the challenge and excitement of that career. Traveling to Europe, China Japan, and all over the U.S. she grew in knowledge and expertise. Helen viewed her job as an opportunity to witness to others of her faith in Jesus Christ. Never aggressive but never shy, those who knew her were aware of her faith and standards.
Helen learned how to balance home, church and job with grace and love. Annual journeys to our cottage in an old Methodist campground on Cape Cod became essential to her spirit. It was there she felt grounded and renewed. Sunday morning worships at the beach, tending her garden and entertaining friends and family was her delight.
A dedicated church woman, Helen held various offices in the local church UMW’s and assisted in counseling youth groups. For many years, serving on the staff at the Haverford Institute. Her warm smile was a trade mark to all who knew her. She was the “Genuine Article” who was always the same at home, church or the agency. A faithful disciple of Jesus Christ and a role model. Blessed with three children, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, her “cup runneth over.” Their marriage of 69 years was a gift from God and they were grateful.

She will be remembered as one who loved to be talking and laughing with her friends.
Weslia P. Hynicka(Mrs. Robin M. Hynicka)
July 8, 1956 - August 30, 2015
As the second black, woman graduate from the Neuroscience Department at the University Of Pennsylvania with a Ph.D, Weslia possessed intellectual excellence; as a team leader in the Pharmacokinetics Department at Glaxo SmithKline she delivered research results and as family member and neighbor she exuded unconditional love. Incredibly smart, strongly willed, infectiously good-natured and uncommonly graciousness Weslia is an indomitable spirit – a spirit that requires all of us to be our best selves.
Weslia emphasized self-determination through self-education and both of her children Rebecca and Alexander are living proof of that encouragement. Especially when the children were young, Weslia tenaciously tended to their needs and tenderly cared for their hearts’ desires. The grandchildren, Keenan, Lyla, Amaya and Dawud will benefit from this legacy and flourish in the light of their Nanna’s/Grammy’s love.
Weslia reinvented herself after physical limitations imposed by the lupus/mixed connective disease necessitated leaving her career behind. Her love of botanical and human form drawing and watercolor combined her dual passions of science and art. Art in many forms – music, drawing, jewelry making, watercolor, knitting, beading and needlepoint - took over. Classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Fleischer Art Memorial and practicing in her art studio at home were essential to her life and spirit.
Since 2000 Weslia persevered through numerous tests, procedures, surgeries, long hospitalizations and arduous periods of physical therapy and recovery. Through it all she remained happy, hopeful, and healthy – I say healthy because she never allowed the disease or her physical condition to define her. Her faith in God and her desire to live a life after the example of Jesus never wavered. She knitted prayer shawls for the sick, made prayer beads for the youth and even preached a Good Friday Sermon entitled “The Hands of God.”
On Wednesday, August 26, 2015 Weslia, weakened and waning, whispered to me that she had a song to give me. In typical fashion she was a bit shy but at the same time sure about it. She said, “You won’t like it because it is so simple but I am going to give it to you anyway.” She, said “I want you to have the song. “I Walk the Line.” I immediately played a version of Johnny Cash singing this simple song and together we listened to it and cried tears of joy. Weslia wanted me to know

that she always had and forever will walk the line for me and that the strength and courage to do so comes from Almighty God – The One who walks the line for all.

Grace Southwell McIntire (nee Hallman), 91, died February 10, 2016. She served 32 years as a member to Annual Conference from the former Tacony UMC in Philadelphia. Grace joined Neshamony UMC in Hulmeville after Tacony closed in 1999. She is survived by her 3 adult children, John McIntire, Patricia Briggs and the Rev. James McIntire, pastor of Hope UMC in Havertown, along with eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Jorge Luis OrtizFebruary 22, 1943 - April 6, 2016
Jorge Luis Ortiz was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico on February 22, 1943, to Jorge and Crucita Ortiz. In addition to his parents, Jorge Luis’ family consisted of two older siblings, José Abdiel and Miriam, and a younger sister, Raquel.
Jorge and Crucita Ortiz, were fervent Christians, and members of the Methodist Church in Arecibo. With great love, they labored in the disadvantaged neighborhood of Barrio Obrero each Sunday, teaching Bible classes on the street corners to children and adults. As their outreach group grew in number, Jorge and Crucita decided to settle in Barrio Obrero. Every week, they opened their home to the community, holding Sunday School classes and church services, ensuring there was a place for the gospel to be preached. Eventually, a building was constructed near the main road in Barrio Obrero, and was named La Restauración United Methodist Church.
Jorge Luis spent his childhood in this Christian environment, learning to share the gospel of Jesus Christ, and becoming familiar with the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church. He also acquired other skills in the financial and administrative areas of the church that one day he would use for the Lord’s service. Throughout his life, Jorge was faithful to the Lord, and the Biblical principles he learned from his youth.
After finishing his studies at the University of Puerto Rico, he was offered a job with Teen Haven in Philadelphia, where he worked for 2 years sharing the gospel with teens facing drug addictions. He visited homes in the community and read the Bible together with families. While working for Teen Haven, Jorge began attending El Mesías United Methodist Church.
Jorge decided to leave Teen Haven when he realized he wanted to marry his college sweetheart. He then secured permanent employment in Philadelphia with the NCR Corporation. One year later, he returned to Puerto Rico to wed his wife Nilda, whom he brought to Philadelphia. They had four children: Jorge, Priscilla, Brenda, and Mara, and three grandchildren: Helene, Declan, and Christopher Jorge.
At El Mesías UMC, Jorge served the Lord in various capacities for over 30 years. He was treasurer, lay leader, and, during the 1980s, he served as lay leader for the EPAC. After his retirement from the NCR Corporation, he was appointed interim pastor of El Mesías, and ultimately, served in that position for eleven years, retiring in 2011.
Jorge Luis spent his retirement years enjoying the company of his three grandchildren, listening to music, reading the Bible, and traveling. In 2015, a severe stroke confined Jorge to bed for 11 months, until the Lord called him home on the peaceful morning of April 6, 2016.
