Scripture ReflectionsTwenty-eighth Sunday
in Ordinary Time October 13, 2019
Reading 1: 2 Kings 5:14-17 Reading 2: 2 Timothy 2:8-13
Gospel: Luke 17:11-19
Fr. Del’s Points to Ponder Apparently, followers of Christ had not expected that being a disciple was going to be as difficult as it was. Paul’s letter to Timothy is a straightforward reminder that as followers face difficulties in bearing witness to Christ, they have already been given the strength they need – from God.
For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. ...bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God.
Sometimes in life it is difficult for us believe that the strength of God is already provided to us, everything that we need has already been given. Most of us have some success with turning our troubles over to God, the challenge is that we, very often, try to take our troubles back and think we can solve them better than God can. We need the words of Paul to Timothy on a regular basis.
Both in my own life, and in the conversations that I have with people of faith, I am reminded that God works much more slowly than we would usually prefer. Sometimes that outcome of our desires are different from what we had hoped. Our response in these moments is passive fear, or active courage. The choice is ours.
With the strength that comes only from God, faith the size of a mustard seed, we find...usually over time...that when we have the courage to give our struggles to God, things work out as they are supposed to. God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but a strength that only comes from the Holy One. Years ago I received a little plaque that reads,
When you stop fighting things and just live, breathe and try your best to treat people right, life just flows. It’s that simple.
I would just add, “By the strength of God.” This is the source of our courage.

There are about 1,300 children in foster care in Hamilton County – children who for some reason were not safe in their own homes. While in many ways these children exist in the shadows, their trauma impacts not only their lives but our entire community. How does this system work?
How are children impacted? What can we, as a caring community, do to protect and care for the most vulnerable members of society? The St. Anthony Peace & Justice Committee is hosting a 3-part conversation to help us better understand this ongoing crisis and to learn how we can respond.

Mass Plus – A New Parish Learning OpportunityThe most important thing we do as a parish, Fr. Del always reminds us, is Sunday Mass. You know how Mass goes, what to do or say. But what is happening on a deeper level? How can you more deeply pray the Mass, and not just attend it?
This school year, the Faith Formation Commission is offering a monthly event called Mass Plus – an addition to 9:30 or 11:30 a.m. Mass. Stay after 9:30 a.m. or come early for 11:30 a.m., or come back if you’ve been to 4:00 or 8:00 p.m.! Adults and kids 4th grade and up start together, then adults stay with Emily Besl and children go with Bill Frantz to explore the meaning of the Mass and why we do the things we do. Each month, we’ll look at different parts of the Mass. Come to all or come when you can.
For adults and older children (4th Grade and up). Once a month, between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Masses on Sundays, in the school cafeteria, 10:35 to 11:20 a.m. (short, informal, 45 minutes).
DATES: October 20, November 17, December 15, January 12, February 9, March 8, April 19, May 17 and June 14.Mass Plus – Come to Mass, stay for more!

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 6, 2019
SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is scheduled on Sundays, either at Mass or at 12:30 p.m. Expectant parents should plan on attending the Baptismal Preparation Program, held six times a year. Call the Parish Office to schedule the Baptism and Preparation Program. The Sacrament of Baptism for adults and school age children is usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil, along with the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Preparation occurs in steps and stages throughout the year with weekly meetings on Sunday after 9:30 a.m. Mass. Call Emily Besl at 688-3143, or the Parish Office for more information.
SACRAMENTS OF HEALING The Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation or Confession) is celebrated each Saturday, 2:30-3:30 p.m., or by appointment with the pastor. Seasonal Penance Services are also celebrated. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick may be scheduled by calling the pastor before a medical procedure, or in the event of a serious illness, or after each Mass on the fifth Sunday of the month. When hospitalized, please notify the Parish Office; this is the only way we know if a parishioner has been hospitalized. In case of medical emergency or death, call the Parish Office and follow prompts.
SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT The Sacrament of Marriage is scheduled by calling the pastor or deacon to begin the process of marriage preparation, at least six months prior to the anticipated wedding date. A date for the wedding is set only after meeting with the pastor or deacon. Discernment for the Sacrament of Orders (ordination to the Priesthood and Diaconate) is facilitated by contacting the pastor or Vocation Director of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Those interested in pursuing Religious Life may also make these contacts.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM The Religious Education Program (R.E.P.) for children (ages 3 years through 8th Grade) begins each year in September and ends in May. Call Theresa Kearney, Coordinator of Children’s Faith Formation, or Barb Farwick, Administrative Assistant, at 688-3155 for more information.
