our voice YWCA of Cortland Spring/Summer Newsletter 2016 Message from Executive Director, Kelly Tobin One of the five core programs that the YW provides is high quality health and wellness programming. We promote total wellbeing by empowering people of all ages through social, cultural, physiological, and recreational experiences. Programs are offered at low cost, and are flexible to meet a variety of needs. The YW fitness team recognizes the importance of options to best suit each client through aquatic, aerobic, weight or personal training services to aid in building healthy lifestyles. Nancy Nivison started using the YWCA therapeutic pool in 1999 when she injured her shoulder and found physical therapy alone wasn’t helping. The warm water has been an essential tool for her recovery. In 2003, her Doctor recommended weight bearing exercises to help with her Osteoporosis and she utilizes the co-ed weight room which was recently added to the facility in 2012. She continues to expand her activities at the YW and now attends Boomernation, a class for active older adults to improve strength and balance through low impact 20-25 minute aerobic segments. In 2012, her husband David started joining her in her workouts. Together they live a healthy lifestyle that combats the constant battle of weight gain. Nancy says she chooses the YWCA for its great family atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, and the many affordable programs offered. Mike Albro chose the YW in 2014 because of the positive and non-judgmental atmosphere. He was looking to improve his health and build muscle for his upcoming knee replacement. He started with swimming and since the fall of 2015, Mike has lost 45 pounds by participating in a combination of fitness classes, water aerobics, and personal training sessions. With the assistance of the YWCA’s personal trainer, Mike has also adopted a better diet and is enjoying a healthy lifestyle that is sure to last. We understand how critical it is for members to have a facility offering affordable, flexible, high-quality options that is welcoming to all. Many clients are referred directly from their physician or physical therapist to continue building and working towards recovery and a lifelong wellness commitment. Our staff strive to provide cutting edge programming and well maintained facilities, which includes a 5 year old Multi-Purpose room and gymnasium, and a 60 foot long handicapped accessible therapeutic pool meeting the standards of the Arthritis Foundation guidelines (86-90 degree water temperature). You might imagine how much financial support and TLC is required to maintain a building built in the 1800’s, and a pool built in the early 1900’s with only one full time Facilities Director, Adam Tyron. We are blessed to have Adam on staff who is very knowledgeable and dedicated to repairing almost anything on a shoestring budget. Your membership to the YW makes all the difference! I would like to personally thank each of you for your constant support and dedication. Your patience and trust fuels our commitment to bring options other YWCA’s have been unable to maintain. Many YW’s have shut down their pool and fitness facilities due to the costly investment. Without members like you, we wouldn’t be able to provide services to members like Nancy and her husband, Mike, and the many others who rely on the YW facilities every day to achieve their personal wellness goals and maintain a lifelong commitment to a healthy lifestyle. 14 Clayton Ave. Cortland, NY 13045 Phone: 607-753-9651 [email protected] www.cortlandywca.org facebook.com/cortlandywca @YWCACortland Our Mission The YWCA of Cortland is a membership organization that supports the growth and leadership of women and girls in our community through quality programs in childcare, mentoring, wellness, social activism, and crisis intervention. Thank you to our generous donors!

After a very successful year in 2015, the YWCA would like to give a heartfelt thank you to all of our donors. We not only met our 2015 Annual Giving goal, but we surpassed it! Every contribution adds up to something very powerful. Every day we see the positive impact our programs and services make and we simply could not do what we do without your support. Thank you so much!

Linda Shutts, our AVV program director, will be leaving the YW after 14 years of dedicated service to the YWCA’s Aid to Victims of Violence program. She will be moving to Kansas to be closer to her family. She will be sorely missed but we hope she enjoys all the extra time with her granddaughter! Volunteers are always needed for the AVV program. We can use manual labor, administrative, and advocates. For more information or to fill out a volunteer application, stop by the front desk. Donations needed: -for clients to set up new apartment - gently used dishes, towels, bedding, cleaning products. Most clients leave with absolutely nothing, so anything is appreciated! -for use in our safe dwelling (must be new/never used) – towels, twin size bedding, cleaning supplies, toiletries, feminine hygiene products A note about furniture and clothing donations: We do not have much space for storage, so please call ahead before bringing items to the YW. Alternatively, we have a partnership with the Thrifty Shopper so our clients get to shop for needed items at no cost.

The YW’s Bridges for Kids program has expanded to include a new Boys Club! The Bridges for Kids program matches 100 area children with volunteer adult mentors. Mentors meet individually with the child once a week, taking him/her out into the community for bowling, swimming, museums, picnics, etc. The individual attention provided by mentoring boosts self-confidence and self-esteem in children whose lives may be in constant states of crisis. Out of all these volunteers, only 8 are males. The waiting list for boys who need that positive male adult role model is long, topping off this year at 43. In an attempt to assist unmatched young boys, the Bridges program has started a Boys Club for boys age 5-12. It is currently run by three college male volunteers who are Recreation majors. They organize activities, supervise and interact with the boys for 90 minutes on Saturdays in the YW gym. If the group is well attended, we hope to continue this pilot program next fall. Over the summer, however, the boys lack the enrichment opportunities and attention they so desperately crave. If you have a male friend, spouse or relative who might be interested in mentoring a Bridges for Kids boy, please refer him to Program Director Sara Earl! Also, look for updates soon about the new YW Girls Club which looks to duplicate the past success of Y-Teens !

Recently, in our preschool classroom at the YWCA Learning Adventure Child Care Center, the week’s theme was community helpers. Miss Renee and Miss Jackie talked to the children about what it means to be a community helper or worker. For National Lost Penny Day on February 12th, the children collected “lost pennies” to donate to the Cortland Regional Medical Center maternity ward for babies that weren’t born with a healthy heart. Pennies and loose change were added by the children and their families and they collected $15.47 to donate. The children were so excited that they would be little helpers giving back to the community and we are so proud of their efforts!
