Welcome to Our Towns! We are pleased to introduce our new publi-cation we so fondly call Welcome to Our Towns! Our goal is to showcase Coudersport, Port Allegany, Galeton, and Ulysses. We look forward to finding everything that makes these towns so amazing and special and sharing it with you.

Our Towns will be talking events, community news, local business, weather and because everyone has a voice we will be taking to the streets asking locals to open up and express their opinion on what makes "their town" so great.

We hope you have a good time reading what our neighbors had to say and also enjoy some of the great local stories inside. Our Towns will be published monthly so keep an eye out for next months edition.

If you see either of us, Jennifer Mong or Tarah Lipps on the streets of your town stop and say hello! Make sure to visit all these great local

businesses inside and thank you for sharing your town with us!

The Pennsylvania Lumber Museum, in Galeton (Pot-ter County), Pennsylvania, has recently opened its up-dated visitor center, which provides improved visitors access, community meeting space, and a changing exhibit gallery. The Lumber Museum is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Com-mission in partnership with the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum Associates.

The expansion added 7,000 square feet, nearly doubling the size of the building. The visitor center renovation and expansion was designed by Larson Design Group of Williamsport. Arris Engineering of Wilkes-Barre designed the fi re protection infrastruc-ture. The prime contractors responsible for construc-tion are Caldwell, Heckles & Egan Inc., Lancaster (general contractor); Silvertip Inc., Lewisburg (HVAC); W.C. Eshenaur & Son Inc., Harrisburg (plumbing); and A&MP Electric, Guys Mills (electrical). The exhibit project involved numerous staff , volunteers, and local partners working with Hilferty Museum Planning and Exhibit Design of Athens, Ohio, and Studio Displays of Pineville, North Carolina.

The new core exhibit, “Challenges and Choices in Pennsylvania’s Forests,” explores the growth of Penn-sylvania’s lumber industry, the devastation and revival of the state’s forests, and current public and private eff orts to maintain a “working forest.” The artifact-rich exhibit also includes a signifi cant section on the Civil-ian Conservation Corps, its impact on the state parks and forests of Pennsylvania, and the personal stories of men whose lives were changed by their enrollment in the CCC. “Challenge Silhouettes” represent mul-tiple perspectives from the past and present, inviting visitors to consider their own role in the ongoing story.

Low-tech interactives defi ne unfamiliar terms and concepts; simulate activities such as guiding a log raft downriver, chopping a notch in a tree with an ax, and cutting down a tree using a crosscut saw; and ask visitors to share their thoughts on ways to sustain healthy forests that balance economic , recreational, and environmental needs. The exhibit uses historic and contemporary images to create a sense of im-

mersion in the forest and to human-ize the story of the lumber industry, the rise of professional forestry, and the involvement of govern-ment agencies in forest man-agement. “See It Here” and “Go See It” labels connect exhibit content to other interpretive venues at the Lumber Museum and to several state parks within an hour of the museum.

The Beautiful new exhib-its in the visitors center complement and connect to the other exhib-its located throughout the over 160-acre mu-seum property. These include a re-created turn of the twentieth century logging camp that houses the museum’s popular seventy-ton Shay geared-locomotive and 1910 Barnhart log loader. A log cabin build by the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1936 showcases the talents and rustic craftsmanship of these dedicated citizens. The outdoor exhibits also include a steam-powered sawmill and log pond, a 1945 Brookville tannery switch engine and a Sustainable Forestry Trail that loops through forty acres of forest surrounding

Coudersport, PennsylvaniaIs a borough in Potter County, Pennsylvania, 110 miles east by south of Erie

on the Allegheny River. The Population was 2,546 at the 2010 census. It is the County Seat of Potter County.

The Coudersport and Port Allegany Railroad Station, Coudersport Historic District, and Potter County Courthouse are listed on the National register of Historic Places.

Coudersport is home to a Scottish Rite Consistory. With over 5000 mem-bers, Coudersport's Consistory is the largest in the Scottish Rite by per capita membership.

The newly re-opened Ice Mine is a popular tourist attraction in Coudersport. The mine freezes with ice in the summer, and the ice melts in the winter.

Coudersport was the home of "Untouchable" Eliot Ness at the time of his death. He was a principal in the Guaranty Paper Corporation, which special-ized in watermarking legal & official documents to prevent counterfeiting. The company moved from Cleveland to Coudersport around 1955 because operating costs were lower. Eliot and his wife Betty & son Bobby were living in the Leon & Lucille Brocklebank home from 1956-1957, and he died from a heart attack at their kitchen sink in May 1957.

Located in the northern portion of Coudersport, is the Coudersport Area Recreation Park (CARP). This sports and recreation park was begun in the 1960s by a group of town leaders, which included Dr. William L. Mitchell, a local veterinarian. It currently has a football field with track & field capabili-ties, baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, picnic areas and hiking trails.

According to historical books at the PSU University Park library, Coudersport derived its name from a Dutchman named Couder who was a primary funder for the surveying of the future town as a "port" on the Allegany (or Allegheny) River. Thus becoming Couder's Port.

Coudersport has the former headquarters of Adelphia, which went bankrupt after internal corruption in 2002.

The fictional town of Farringdon, depicted in the Judy Bolton detective series by Margaret Sutton, is based on Coudersport, where Sutton grew up and attended school. The school, town hall, and several recognizable residences are described in her books. Judy Bolton Days, an annual festival honoring the books of the late Sutton, is hosted each October by the local Chamber of Commerce.

Actress Riki Lindhome was born in Coudersport in 1979.

Port Allegany, PennsylvaniaOriginally known as Canoe Place, the town’s name was changed to Port

Allegany in 1838.The town developed as a port on the Allegheny River, and provided a place

where travelers coming overland from the Susquehanna River could continue by boat.

Lumber and tanning industries grew, and a railway later passed through the town.

In the 1800s natural gas was discovered in the area, which led to the expan-sion of industries including glass firms, chemical plants, cheese factories, machine shops, brick plants, sawmills, planing mills, tanneries and furniture factories.
