I NCLUDED in th e rate schedules which thiscompany filed with th e Public Service Commission of Pennsylvania on April 1st to becomeeffective May 1s t is a new plan for calls betweenPhiladelphia an d suburban points.Th e present rates are based on th e distancef rom one cent ral poin t in Philadelphia to a central point in eaoh suburban exchange area. Thust he r at e between Philadelphia an d l.ansdowneon this basis is lOcoUnder the newplan Philadelphia wit! be dividedinto four zones, each zone having its own tol lrates to suburban points. Toll rates to suburbanpoints will then be based on th e distance f rom acentral point in each of the zones. Thus the new rate between West Philadelphiaand Lansdowne will be 5c. Between Lansdowneand central Philadelphia it will be 10c, as at

present. Similarly, Melrose subscribers will beable to talk to Oak Lane and other nearby Philadelphia ~ e n t r a l officesfor 5c.This new arrangement will apply betweenPhiladelphia and all suburban points. It willresultin a saving to subscribers of about $100,000a year, and will work ou t moreequitably in manycases where unde r t he present plan th e toll ratebetween suburban communities and adjacentsections of Philadelphia is tOe or 15c.Certain other rate changes on Out-of-Town callsare made in th e new rate schedules. Many of the S tat ion-to-S tat ion rates whichare now 25c or over will no t be increased. Whereth e rates arechanged the increase in most casesis no t more than 5c. There is no change on ratesof 75c or over.Person-to-Person calls under th e new scheduleswill be charged for at approximately 40 per cent.more than th e Station-to-Station day rates, instead of about 25 per cent. more, as at present. This applies only on calls on which th e Person-toPerson rate is less than $1.00.
