CARES Bike Safety ExcursionOn Monday 12th March, students from Stage 3 had the opportunity to enjoy the marvellous weather in Palmdale at the C.A.R.E.S bike safety program. Students sat through a brief presentation on bike safety rules and regulations before heading back out into the sunshine to begin some practical training. After lunch, the eager Wadalba kids were put to the test in free time! The traffic lights came on and the demerit system was put in place! With a few missing indicators and moments of rushing to beat the pedestrians, the police officers (and police teachers) began to pull individuals over and take demerit points for road offences. Overall, it was a great day filled with lots of learning and smiles.

In the Classroom with 2/3TOur 2/3T class is made up of 25 fantastic students; 15 from year 2 and 10 from year 3. We have 12 girls and 13 boys. 2/3T has had a wonderful start to the year with lots of learning and lots of fun. We have been taking visits to our farm and learning about changes in the weather and the impact that environmental changes have on our farm animals and wildlife. In drama, we have been participating in dramatic role plays where we act out particular emotions and scenarios.

Stage 1 - “Kids Night In!”Thank you for your most kind and generous donations on the night of the ‘Kids Night In’. Your wonderful contributions will buy new specialised resources for Project Based Learning. Our mission has always been to integrate creative, innovative lessons into our teaching and learning program and soon we will get to do it with Lego! The benefits of Lego are endless! Lego provides tools that develop lateral thinking in a fun environment. It teaches kids to think in three dimensions. It develops students’ problem-solving skills and improves literacy as students work with instructions. Here is what some of our students had to say about the Kids Night In.

Quade – The sausage sandwiches and juice poppers were so yummy.

Vince – I liked watching ‘Finding Nemo’ because it was a nice movie.

Albie - I loved dancing at the disco and I especially loved the song ‘Cocoon.’

Safina – The sausage sizzle was delicious and the movie was great!

Sachin – It was so much fun because we got to dance and play Lego.

Olivia – I loved getting my nails done by the girls because they looked so pretty. Even some of the boys got their nails done too!

Isakios – I got to dance and play a ‘Spice Girls’ game that was really fun.

Ashton – I had fun dancing and I loved the part where we watched the movie.

Zoe – I liked sitting with my friends to watch the movie in Mrs Britt’s class.

Kyran – The best time ever! I liked dancing, the BBQ and colouring my nails.

James – My favourite part was the BBQ and dancing in the hall.

Gabriella – It was wonderful because everything was so much fun!

Brodie – I liked when I got nail polish and when we got to go in the hall and dance.

Jazlin – I liked watching the movie and getting my nails done by the big girls.

A massive thank you to Mrs MacDonald for organising this fantastic event!

Stage 2 - “Kids Night In”Our first Kids night in event for 2018 was a lot of fun. Our fantastic stage 2 students spent the night being involved in a range of activities such as colouring and puzzles, watching movies, and playing games such as twister. Some of us even dared to get our fingers and toes painted! We then had a very tasty feed before hitting the dance floor and showing off our incredible dance moves!

Stage 3 - “Kids Night In”Students in Stage 3 had a fabulous time at the Kid’s Night In/Parents Night Out on Wednesday the 14th March. In the Stage 3 rooms there were some great activities happening. We had: Jenga, connect 4, students making Beado creations, lots of drawing on the new whiteboard tables and students playing with technology. It was great to see so many smiles and conversations happening around the room. After a feed of sausage sandwiches, we danced the night away in the hall while a few year six students went to the kindergarten rooms to help out and join in the activities with our younger students. We hope parents enjoyed a night out and look forward to more of these nights.

Commonwealth Games in Stage 2Ready. Set. Hurdle! Stage 2 has been competing in our own Commonwealth Games during sport every Friday. Each student has been allocated a country team and have been competing and earning points for their team. The countries competing in our Wadalba Stage 2 Commonwealth Games are: The Bahamas, Botswana, Canada, England, Fiji, Ghana, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa and Wales.

Activities, which are based around fundamental movement skills, have included: hurdles, coit throwing, the egg and spoon, shooting hoops, hockey drills, volley ball, beanbag throwing, hover board balancing and trolley board racing. Each team has a point’s keeper who records points at each activity. This has enhanced student competition and engagement. All students have participated eagerly and are racing their way up the sports tally. We cannot wait to see who the winning country will be!

Motivated Learner Focus

Ways I produce quality work are by working with others as a group so they can share what they think and it might help the other person learn too. Another way is taking time in my work and to try to the best of my ability. Also not sitting next to people who will distract me and not help me learn. Another way is planning my work out and working in a quiet learning environment.

By Lilly Harmer

I’m going to try and make improvements by not sitting near a person I get distracted by, taking my time in my book work and doing neat work. I can also improve by not giving up on what we are doing.

By Katie-Lee Johnson

There are lots of ways you can learn and produce quality work. Collaboration, joining in on class discussions are a good start. We can always and are always learning from each other. It’s always Ok to ask questions. Always be confident in your ability because you are making improvements every day. Don’t worry about your surroundings, worry about your work. When you are working, feel comfortable as it helps you to do your best work.

Motivated Learner FocusTakes time to produce quality work

Taking time to Produce Quality work- Angel Vittorino

I think this week's motivated learner focus means take your time it's not a race. No one is going to judge how slow you are going, just take your time and appreciate how much hard work you have put into it as that is more rewarding. You will be more proud of yourself if you take your time instead of being the first one done. Take your time and appreciate your writing, maths and any other school work.

“Takes time to produce quality work” this was Wadalba’s new motivated learner focus for the past fortnight. This has helped me and many other kids along the way become motivated learners. This can mean you join in at class discussions and students take time to do there best to try hard and to still finish with a neat book. Trying your best is better than finishing first.you don’t always have to be the fastest. It’s not a race and there’s no prize. Sometimes rushing even means silly mistakes that you wouldn’t normally make. Don’t feel bad if your last, being last can also be good. Last doesn’t always mean the worst quality. If you do your best, you have done great. Practice makes perfect. That’s what I think “takes time to produce quality work” means. If you set goals and try your best you can grow up and do what you were born to do. Matilda Denmeade

Takes time to produce quality work- Alannah Bryant

To me this week’s motivated learner focus means we should always take time and pride to make quality work in our books. You should never rush your work unless it is necessary because that is not quality work. Quality work is when you produce your best work. Did you know that also taking your time means you have the time to actually form your letters properly which will make your writing neater? Quality work also means working hard to set things out properly and complete your work. We should always take pride in our work and try to be motivated learners.

Student Writing - 5SNatural Disasters by Hannah Brown

The ground rumbling with anger and cracking into a million pieces. Buildings getting pushed over by the giants that work for the earthquake. The rumbling is getting fiercer and fiercer and children are crying louder and louder.

And a couple of character descriptions based on interested names:

Kiralee - One morning, we were all in our classroom. Suddenly, a lady came dancing into the class and sung "Hi! My name is Ava Honeybee. I'm going to be teaching your beautiful class today." She had hazel brown eyes and beautiful, silky blonde hair against her pink and blue dress. Her pearl necklace and black high heels matched her bright blue nails. She was so beautiful!

This one is from Christian

All of a sudden Horatio Sourgrape got dragged into the room and yelled "I want to go home Mummy! I hate doing work, the classroom is a yucky colour and the teacher has weird hair!" Horatio was as still as a potato as he sat there looking grumpy and crying all day. He sat in a corner and whinged "leave me alone" and "go away!" He was as white as a vampire and looked at the class with tears rolling down his cheeks. He was acting like a preschooler on his first day of school.

Harmony Day - Everyone BelongsIn stage 2 we have been preparing for the lead-up to Harmony Day through discussions and activities about our sense of community and what it means to live in a peaceful community where all people are valued for their differences. Today we used our creative talents to develop our own Harmony Day flag and a Chatterbox outlining various Harmony Day facts such as: "How many different languages are spoken in Australian homes?" Answer: More than 300 and "How many migrants have made Australia their home since the end of World War II?" Answer: More than 7.5 million. This was a fun way for students to learn facts about Harmony Day in an engaging way.

Respect, belonging and inclusiveness are all important not just in our classroom but across our community, country and the world. This is why Harmony Day is such an important day in our classrooms and school.
