Scott’s CornerDon’t worry that children never
listen to you; worry that they arealways watching you. RobertFulghum
As a young father of three, Ispend a lot of time thinking aboutmy role as a father to my twodaughters and son. Nothingprepared me for the roller coasterof emotions that I experience as afather and I am never quite able to“turn off” the worry. Shortlybefore my first child was born, Iremember my mother-in-lawtelling me “you’ll never love sodeeply and you’ll never worry somuch as you will as a parent”. Atthe time I remember scoffing tomyself thinking that her advicewas meant for someone else. Whywould I ever find myself worryingdeeply about my children? Was sheinferring that my children wouldhave major challenges growingup? The nerve! Was she trying topredict a gloomy future formy family?
Little did I know.Nearly eight years later I have
seen the wisdom in her statement.Even when things are going greatand my children are doing well,my worrying literally never stops.Am I working too much? Am Ispending enough time with them?Am I disciplining too much or toolittle? Why does each child have to
be so different? (Each child hassuch different needs) Are wespoiling them too much? Am Ipraising them enough? Will theyreally grow into teenagerssomeday that think Dad isn’t“cool”? Why does it feel like thereis never enough time to teachthem everything I want them toknow about life? Do they reallyknow how much I love them?
These worries are always on mymind just as my mother-in-lawpredicted. Recently (while waitingfor the elevator) I had theopportunity to briefly discuss myworrying with the daughter of oneof our residents. After sharing my“worries” with her, she saidsomething to the effect of “If youare worrying that much, you aredoing it right”. Hercomment/advice may haveseemed insignificant to her but itwas very meaningful to me.
It’s impossible to live lifewithout worry or regret. Scott’sCorner continued on page 6.

Scott’s CornerContinued
You may be a worried father, family member, friend, orco-worker - we will allexperience moments of worrywhen we care deeply about whatwe are doing. That said, we can’texpect ourselves to be perfectand should be satisfied and atpeace with giving our best effort.
Dale Carnegie said, “You cansing only what you are. You canpaint only what you are. Youmust be what your experiences, your environment, and yourheredity have made you. Forbetter or for worse, you mustplay your own little instrumentin the orchestra of life.” Alongthe same lines John Woodensaid, “Success is peace of mindwhich is a direct result ofself-satisfaction in knowing youdid the best of which you arecapable.”
Have a great month!Scott
