One of the interesting histories I discovered in a New York Times article was that of the Jewish tradition of the “tzedakah” (a Hebrew word that is translated as “charity” in English). In the Old Testament, the tzedakah was a box that was used to collect donations to fund the repair of the First Temple in Jerusalem. Further understanding about this tradition can be learned from the writings of Maimonides, a preeminent medieval Jewish philosopher and Torah scholar. Maimonides taught that there are “Eight Levels of Giving” including the following: • Giving an interest-free loan to a person in need; forming a partnership with a person in need; giving a grant to a person in need; finding a job for a person in need; so long as that loan, grant, partnership, or job results in the person no longer living by relying upon others. • Giving tzedakah anonymously to an unknown recipient via a person (or public fund) which is trustworthy, wise, and can perform acts of tzedakah with your money in a most impeccable fashion. • Giving tzedakah anonymously to a known recipient. • Giving tzedakah publicly to an unknown recipient. • Giving tzedakah before being asked. • Giving adequately after being asked. • Giving willingly, but inadequately. • Giving “in sadness” - it is thought that Maimonides was referring to giving because of the sad feelings one might have in seeing people in need (as opposed to giving because it is a religious obligation; giving out of pity).

Scott’s Corner ContinuedAlthough I am not of Jewish

faith, as I read about tzedakah Icouldn’t help but think aboutways in which I could be morecharitable in my giving to those inneed. This holiday season, I wouldinvite each of us to look for waysin which we can participate in theseason of giving. I submit thatregardless of our physical orfinancial situation, we can findways to give to those around us.Whether it be through a kindword and a smile or a donation tothose in need, I am confident thatas we make the effort to give thisseason, we will not only bringhappiness to those in need but wewill see an increase of happinessin our own lives.

Happy Holidays,Scott

DRCS NewsIt’s the holidays! Yum!It is that time of year again

when we start celebrating theholidays, and often, that meanseating all those delicious foodswe’ve come to expect and love inabundance. After all, we may onlyget them at this time of year. However, as one gets older, ourmetabolism slows and we don’tneed as much food to maintaingood health. Following are sometips to help you enjoy all thefabulous foods that the holidaysoffer, without experiencing theeffects that those foods can haveon you.

Continue to drink plenty ofwater. Water not only helps toflush toxins and cleanse the body, but it helps to make you feel full ifyou drink some prior to andduring the meal.

Avoid heavy meals, especially atnight. Instead of taking a nap aftera large indulgence of food, take astroll. It helps with digestion andjust feels good.

Maintain your sleep pattern.Often, we end up staying up muchlater than usual, but this can wearon the body and will make youfeel more fatigued during qualitytime with friends and relatives.

Watch the salt andcarbohydrate intake. Who doesn’tlove a good roll, or two? Enjoy alittle, but realize thatoverindulgence of both of thesethings can lead to pain and

swelling in joints and muscles.Lastly, enjoy the time you have

with friends and family duringthis special time! Qualityrelationships and sharing of ourlives is what it is all about and thisseason is a wonderful time toexperience that. Happy Holidays!
