BULLETIN PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Yarra Bend Rotary
I am a little late with the bulletin entry this week as I spent the
weekend in Warrnambool at the District Conference but more of that
later.
Last week 13 of us enjoyed a very interesting evening at the RAAF
Museum at RAAF Point Cook. Guided through the museum by a
very enthusiastic Director, David Gardner. We saw the history of the
RAAF chronologically from its inception as the Australian Flying
Corps to the present day. We also had the privilege of getting up
close and personal to some aircraft including an F-111, F4 Phantom
and a Canberra bomber. David is a retired Warrant Officer of the
technical variety and with a wealth of knowledge and vast experience
he could add many personal anecdotes to some of the exhibits. I
suspect that if we did not stop him at 8.30pm we would still be there!
Many of our present and past members attended the funeral of
Charter Member and Past President, Peter Leonard. It was a large
funeral celebrated by former member Fr. Malcolm Crawford. Ann
and other family members expressed their appreciation of the large
turnout of Yarra Bend present and former members.
A nautical flavour infused the District the Conference at
Warrnambool from the jaunty nautical attire of members of the
Balwyn RC through to the topics of some speakers. Without going
into detail, we were exposed to the range of activities undertaken by
our District, to information about Warrnambool and population and
infrastructure growth and to the maritime life around the Victorian
coast. There were also talks of inspiration and the activities of others
eg the “Senior’s Gap Year”.
It was also particularly pleasing to see a long video featuring Bob
Lambert speaking very eloquently about the Boroondara Cares
Foundation. And, even more particularly as he was wearing our
latest club shirt with the “Yarra Bend” logo very prominently
displayed – no one in the audience could not know Bob’s club.
However, I think the most important message was primarily delivered
by PDG Brian Hall from New Orleans and the RI President’s
Personal Representative. His message, when distilled from the
anecdotes etc, was simply that when seeking new members or just
trying to raise our visibility, we should be amplifying the opportunities
Rotary provides and achievements made, rather than the obligations
attached to membership –a much preferable positive approach! We
have hundreds of extraordinary stories to tell and we should tell the
world.

RAAF Museum – Point Cook
Yarra Bend members journeyed out to the RAAF Museum at Point Cook where Australia’s air
force was formed in March 1921. Between 1939 and 1945, 2,700 pilots trained at Point Cook
under the Empire Air Training Scheme. Point Cook is the former home of the RAAF College
including Officer Training School (OTS) and the RAAF Academy from 1961 to 1985.
The RAAF museum showcases a wide assortment of aircraft, memorabilia, and artifacts from 1914
to the present. Museum aircraft highlights include an F-4E Phantom fighter-bomber, an Australian
F-111G bomber, Canberra Bomber, a Vietnam conflict Iroquois helicopter, a Supermarine Seagull
- Walrus, and a Mirage IIIO. There are many other aircraft as well as hundreds of artifacts that
track the history of Australia’s great RAAF.
