Our Superheroes and SuperheroinesSafeen Ahmadi Pada Edvandro Baptista
Welcome to Superheroes: South of the RiverWe are delighted to share some of the visual art work created by Croydon’s finest young Superheroines and Superheroes. This work was developed in Maya Productions’ cross-arts youth project involving drama, martial arts and comic book storytelling.
Inspired by the lack of representation of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic characters in western comic books and films our project explored diverse role models, heroes and heroines. Through a series of weekly master classes young people, aged 14 – 18, created their very own Superheroes and Super Villains for South London.
A performance at the Zakir Family Centre in Croydon saw these Superheroes team up, with Diverse Warriors tackling crime and conspiracy in Croydon, the Hunters challenging Bullies, and Heroes of the Earth saving the planet from destruction – once again! The martial arts training in Karate played a big role in the success of our Teams.
This comic features the art developed in the master classes, from initial explorations of what being a Superhero can mean, to character creation and then comic book storytelling. A new play for teenagers inspired by the project will now be written by Oladipo Agboluaje. We hope that you enjoy the Comic.
