Traditional processing for coffee involves the separation of the skin and pulp from the bean. This skin and pulp has historically been discarded in landfills and holding bins where it rapidly begins decomposing.

The decaying waste produces harmful mycotoxins that can contaminate local water as it seeps into the ground. In the course of a year, roughly 6 millions tons of coffee is consumed globally. This leads to potentially 24 million tons of skin and pulp discarded every year into the environment.
