* Seminars marked with an asterisk can be tailored to a gender-specific audience if desired.
All ATP-XX seminars can be given in German or English.
As part of the seminar material, which is included in the price, the participants receive a
book (DIN A4, 172 pages for Career development seminars, 148 pages for Communication,
84 pages for Time- and self-management and 60 pages for Leadership skills).
All ATP-XX seminars will be fully customised to the wishes and needs of the particular
customer.
Our seminars can be integrated into settings like flipped classroom, in which the participants
receive e.g. a webinar before the seminar, so they can hit the ground running. A structured
follow-up with the participants can be used to increase the sustainability of the learnings.

Our team
Dr. Karin Bodewits comes from the Netherlands where she studied Biology. She completed
a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Edinburgh and moved to Munich thereafter. Here,
she founded the company ScienceMums, a network for natural scientists. In this function,
she became book author, speaker and trainer and published a wide range of articles around
the topi Wo e & a ee . Al ost th ee years later, she founded the career platform
NaturalScience.Careers. ScienceMums then
became part of this broader platform. She
specialises in the topics communication and
career development, which she can put into
gender- and intercultural perspectives.
Dr. Philipp Gramlich has studied and
researched chemistry at various universities in Germany, Australia and Scotland. After
experience at baseclick, a biotechnology start-up and as Teamleader R&D, QC and Analytics
at Eurofins Genomics, he is now fully focusing on his work as co-founder of
NaturalScience.Careers. He specialises in seminars and talks about career development,
leadership and gender in science.
Together, they wrote books and regularly contribute to Naturejobs, Chemistry World,
Nachrichten aus der Chemie and Laborjournal.

Company visits
What is it like outside of academia? What is the difference between working for a small or
large company? Is working for a start-up or maybe a not-for-profit organisation supporting
local biotechnology clusters an
interesting alternative?
We aim to visit 2 - 3 companies/
organisations during a day trip.
The participants have the ability
to get to know the organisations,
get a better understanding of the
career opportunities in several
representative work
environments and establish
valuable contacts outside of academia. We select and brief our hosts to provide you with
relevant career info but abstain from blunt corporate advertisement. We travel around by
mini-bus with a lunch stop on the way.
Typically, the visits will include a presentation, site visit and Q&A session with professionals
from the company. We tailor our visits to the specific labour-market situation of the target
group.
The company visits are ideally suited for a combination with (parts of) the se i ar Good ye a ade ia? or “elf-prese tatio , et orki g a d s all talk .

How to row the boat? - Leadership skills
Leadership has undergone changes- in parallel with changes to our work environments.
Flatter hierarchies, project work in a matrix structure and more rapid changes of
assignments, locations and colleagues are but some of the new challenges we all face.
Interpersonal skills become ever more important when leading a team or a project: for
motivation, conflict resolution or work delegation.

Depending on the wishes of the group, different aspects of this wide and highly important
skill set will be emphasised. Examples for topics that are often requested:
- Hire for quality! How to get the best team and not just clones of yourself.
- Leading a diverse team: age, gender, cultural background... We´re all individuals and so are
our teams. Can we find a leadership style that fits them all and is this even desirable?
- Conflict management
+ Prevent conflicts by your lab set-up: communication and practicalities

Negotiation
Negotiation does not only happen on the flea market. It is one of the most important
professional skills for virtually every type of profession. And it gets more important the
further you move up the ladder. Look at the gender wage gap as an example. While working
in a minimal wage job is a showcase for gender equality, management isn´t! The gender
wage gap, adjusted for professional
choices and working hours, grows as you
change from a chicken costume into
finer dress! At higher positions you can
and should negotiate! And salary is by
far not the only thing you´ll negotiate
about throughout your (professional)
life: how to distribute the work in your
lab, how to handle noise in your office
and how to get your kid to eat his
veggies. All these more or less fierce
conversations constitute negotiations.
But is there anything you can do about
your negotiation skills? Yes! Negotiating
is a matter of practice alike many others skills and can be learned. Many of the
characteristics of a good negotiator are actually quite sympathetic ones and have nothing to
do with ripping people off in shabby deals. The skills you need are building relationships,
good communication and a solid preparation.

Convincing & debating
Scientists are often in the situation that they need to discuss their findings or their need for
extra funding or resources with other members of the scientific community or with the
general public. The ability to express yourself in a concise and clear manner, using strong
arguments, is therefore of utmost importance.
This interactive seminar with real life scenarios, public speaking exercises, argumentation
examples and debates, will help participants to successfully engage in various interactions
with other scientists and non-scientists. Your Q&A sessions will never be the same again. You
will convince your boss to buy this fantastic Mass Spec. You will disarm other people´s
arguments against you now that you can look behind their facade. And last but not least, you
will win on paper (e.g. research- and grant- proposals)!

Oral presentation
There are many ways in which scientists communicate their work, publications, poster or oral
presentations or via individual conversations. In terms of leaving a deep impression about
your work and yourself, oral presentations are a very powerful way. However, many scientists
are scared of the prospect to stand in front of a large and potentially critical audience to
present their work. They rush through the presentations, clinging onto overloaded slides and
miss a crucial chance to show themselves in a positive light.

Storytelling for scientists
We all enjoy a good story, whether it's during a presentation, a job interview, a conference
coffee break, or simply during a pub night. Why? It activates the same areas of our brain that
would be activated during the actual event. Consequently, audiences feel so much more
engaged when they hear a narrative about your real-life experiences as researcher or how
you finally chased that superbug down. Much more than if you monotonously talk them
through a list of bullet points on a power point slide. But to be understood when talking
about one's own research work, let alone to speak about yourself, is not easy for many
researchers. During this seminar, you learn to enchant a wide range of audiences with
s ie e sto ies a d to apti ate a la audie e ith o ple esea h esults. Be ause… speaking science can be magical!
Duration: 2-3 days
Course type: 10% theory, 90% practical work

- Great storytellers of our time
- Bringing science across using stories
- True, personal stories
- Research & stories
- Craft a narrative

climax/ main message
This is a 2 to 3- day course that can be followed by a lively evening programme (e.g. at a
retreat) with personal- or science story contributions from all course participants. The
evening programme will be moderated by us with wittiness and absurdity.
Our guest
Simon Hauser (M.A.) has been moderating Science Slams since
2012. He has been slamming himself since 2015 and won the
second prize at the German Science Slam in 2017. He studied
History and Literature in Heidelberg and Berlin. After gaining
experience at a Berlin communication start-up he founded his
own company Hauser-Kommunikation. Currently he's not only
writing a doctoral thesis in Marburg, but also works as a
seminar leader for scientists of all disciplines, helping them to
translate and to transport their findings to any kind of audience.
