“A Celebration of Ministry”
Sunday, June 11, 2017 – 8:45 a.m.
“How can they preach unless they are sent?
How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.”
Romans 10:15
Sunday, June 11th, is going to be a special day! We have a rare and wonderful opportunity to
celebrate ministry. We have five retired pastors in our congregation who have served in ministry a
combined 297 years since their ordination! By vocation, they have been retired for many years, yet
they have seamlessly continued to minister to the hearts and lives of family members, friends and
congregations they have served.
We are excited to celebrate Rev. Paul Wietzke (ordained, 1952), Rev. Bud Hutter (1952),
Rev. Grant Gard (1955), Rev. Jerry Hefty (1960), and Rev. Don Brekhus (1969), and their lifelong
service to Jesus Christ and his church. We have been blessed to receive their love, faith, support,
encouragement, wisdom, and knowledge at Our Saviour’s. I hope you will join us as we give God
thanks for their faithful witness and genuine love for the Lord.
Personally, I thank God for surrounding me with five wonderful men of God. They are my
friends, my mentors, my colleagues, and my brothers in Christ. From the beginning, they have
encouraged, supported and empowered me. I look forward to the time when I can pass forward the
blessings that they have extended to me, to other pastors in ministry.
We also give God thanks for the wonderful women who have shared in these pastors’ lives and
ministries. So often, unsung heroes, these wives generously give of themselves, sacrificing for the
larger cause, unseen by most. But we honor, recognize, and acknowledge Elsie Wietzke, Phyllis
Gard, Nellie Mae Hutter (who is with the Lord), Donna Hefty and Pat Brekhus, and their lives of
service for Christ and His Kingdom.
See you on June 11th!
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Mark

miracles...JESUS cares about us and we
know that because we have been reading that
in the BIBLE, which is one of God’s special
ways to talk to us!

News from The Caring Place
We served a total of 93 families in April; 22 of
these families were new to the Caring Place; 18
families came for the first time this year but had
been in last year; 39 families had shopped in
March, and 14 families had skipped at least 1
month since the were in last.
423 people were served this month including
Men, Women & Children (18 years and younger).
As word of this resource continues to spread, it
appears the number of people we are helping is
increasing at an alarming rate. We thank God
this ministry is available.
Please consider volunteering Tuesday and or
Thursday 1 to 4 p.m.; even once a month would
be so helpful. Contact Mardi at 360-913-1551 for
information.
ESL classes have started—Thursdays, at 6:15
following the Gathering Place suppers!
Special Request: The Caring Place would ap-
preciate donations of paper bags and large
plastic bags, especially large black garbage
bags or kitchen garbage bags. An “extra roll
lying around” would be great!
Be a part of the
2017 OSLC MISSION TEAM! Our great commission…
Go ye therefore into all the world
(or to Mt. Vernon!)
This is an opportunity for an all-congregation
“Mission Trip”! The Foundation for Academic
Endeavors (FAE) is a summer academy for
Latin/low income children: kindergarten
through 9th grade.
The students attend class Monday—Thursday
at Skagit Valley Community College where
they are taught by certificated teachers, and
receive breakfast and lunch along with a book
each week.
Founded by eight local churches, supported by
the College and Mt. Vernon the last three
years, up to 25o students have attended.
Portions of those students are from Stanwood.
These students are transported each way daily.
Many attend our WOW program as well as
Gathering Place.
We are looking for volunteers to help in the
classroom, playground, serving food, or riding
the bus. The dates: July 17-20. Please consider
volunteering all 4 days. We will gather at the
church for prayer and carpool together to
SVCC.
Hours: 7:00—1:15. Questions? Contact Cindy
TD: 360-631-7317 or your OSLC Mission
Board (Cindy, Ann McCune, Ryan Ovenell,

mann, Rose King).

Thank you very much to all who donate funds for altar
flowers. Because no funds for flowers are designated in
the regular church budget, we depend on donations and
in the summer we use flowers from our own gardens.
Please consider honoring a loved one or a special occasion by
donating flowers for the altar. Add your name to the calendar in
the narthex and put a check for $30.00 in the offering.
With grateful thanks for your continued support of flowers to the
glory of God,

Sermon Series for June:
“The Holy Spirit: What you need to know!”
Jesus said, “Trust me! It is for your good that I go away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if
I go away, I will send him to you.” John 16:7
After his resurrection, Jesus spent 40 days with his Disciples. He then ascended to heaven and had told His disciples
to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the Gift of the Father. Jesus said that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit
came upon them and then they would be his witnesses throughout the world.
The Holy Spirit did arrive at the Jewish festival of Pentecost and the disciples were never the same. The power that
filled the disciples, is the same power that is available to us today. But most people know very little about the Holy
Spirit.
In June, we are going to dive into the power, purpose and provision of the Holy Spirit for our lives
today. I hope you’ll join me in the journey.
It all begins on Pentecost Sunday, June 4, 2017.
