It was Christmas Eve, and I was not done with my Christmas shopping. So I got in the car and headed out. Driving to the mall was horrible. Driving through the mall parking lot was even worse. Once in the store, the aisles were crowded. I searched and searched, found what I wanted, and headed to the long cashier lines.

In front of me were a couple women much more frustrated than I. Exasperated, one of them huffed to the other, “I just can’t wait till blankety-blank Christmas is over!!” I think she was missing something about Christmas. She was belting out loud what a lot of people feel.

Christmas can become a burden or a drudgery, too many same-same parties, too many gift obligations. This might be you. It is definitely some people you work with, or friends you hang out with, family you love and pray for, or a lonely neighbor.

If I were Dr. December, I would offer a prescription to the worn-out woman in the shopping line; to your searching coworker, friend, family member and neighbor; and to your heart if it’s heavy. I would prescribe a Silent Night; some Joy to the World; a pilgrimage to far Away in a Manger, in O Little Town of Bethlehem, where Of the Father’s Love Begotten an Infant Holy, Infant Lowly was born for you and for me. I would prescribe a late night encounter with Angels We Have Heard on High announcing God Rest You, Merry! (pssst…This song is saying that God wants to make you merry, not that God wants to give rest to merry gentlemen.) God did not give us Christmas as a sentimental holiday In the Bleak Midwinter. The core of Christmas is Mary’s Boy Child.

These are the things that I Wonder As I Wander. And when I kneel on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, I will whisper in wonder, “What Child Is This?”

I have two pleas for you this month: 1) O, Come All Ye Faithful. 2) Who can you invite and bring with you to hear some great Christmas music and to encounter Jesus as the meaning of Christmas?

Pastor Ben

Sunday School Christmas Program

The Preschool through 6th Grade Sunday School Christmas program will be held during 9:00 a.m. worship on Sunday, December 16th. A special coffee will follow

worship and there will be no Sunday School that day. Christmas program rehearsals will be held during the Sunday School hour on December 2nd & 9th.

For Such a Time as This: Your prayer ministry team is always seeking prayer warriors!!

Jesus reminds us often that HIS house is to be a "house of prayer". Prayer in the Chapel (Sunday mornings at 8:15 a.m.) gives us the opportunity to pray with and for our Pastor, and for all the many volunteers serving that particular Sunday---for those with special needs

and for our mission outreach---our Nations leaders and much, much more:

Prayer in the alcove gives opportunity to thank and praise God for HIS presence, power and peace through the time of worship with the family of God! You are welcome to join in this time of

"standing in the gap" sharing our heartfelt needs before the throne of grace!

St. Paul reminds us to "devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful" Col. 4:2

friend or neighbor - everyone welcome!

Congregational Meal Guidelines Advent Suppers, Lenten Suppers, etc.

*There is a budgeted amount for expenses incurred for congregational meals such as soup suppers. *Please charge all supplies (soup ingredients, sandwiches, bars, drinks, etc.) at Audubon Food Land to OSLC. You will be asked to sign a charge slip. Along with signing your name, indicate what you are purchasing supplies for (such as “Soup Supper”). This allows the church office to know where to categorize the expense as other groups also charge during the month. *If you need to purchase supplies somewhere other than Audubon Food Land and pay for them personally, please turn in a receipt for reimbursement within one week of the event. *If you have a free-will basket, the proceeds will go into the non-designated Memorial Fund unless a specific need has been pre-determined. *Since there is a budgeted expense for these meals, no one should need to incur personal expense when volunteering to help. Please consider your volunteer time as your donation.

Thank you to Pastor Ben and my church

family for all the cards, visits and flowers while

I was in the hospital. Special thanks to my family for all the trips

they made and for staying with me

while I recuperate.

Love, Alice Kauffman

December Rock News: November 18th: The Rock Thankful Project: We are meeting at the church at 3:00 p.m., we will text out a reminder. We will work on our project, then go bowling! Come, help with the Rock project, and join in the fun of bowling!

December 9th: Christmas Caroling: This is such an enjoyable outing! Plan on sharing some seasonal cheer with some church and community members, and after caroling come back to the church for some hot chocolate and goodies.

This is a fun way to get into the holiday spirit!

January 24th WINTER JAM: Looks like a great line up of artists including NewsBoys United! We usually leave school around 3:00 p.m., get to Council Bluffs to wait in line for tickets and we need to bundle up. Winter in Iowa and waiting in line gets cold but it is honestly part of the fun!! We enjoy the concert, and get home very late, somewhere between midnight and 12:30 a.m. Please let a Rock

leader know if you are interested in going by January 12th, so we can line up rides for everyone!

The Rock leaders want you to know going into Thanksgiving and Christmas that we are blessed beyond measure to enjoy time with you.

We hope you have a Joyful Thanksgiving and a Merry, Merry Christmas!

Grace & Ibrahimu (we have nicknamed Ibrahimu, Ib), both from Tanzania, have been sponsored through Compassion International by the OSLC Sunday School children since 2013.

Thank you to all who have brought Sunday School offering! This money helps Grace & Ib with their schooling, educational/skills

training, provides food, clothing, healthcare, etc. but most of all, it provides the opportunity for these children to learn about Jesus.

Through letters, pictures and prayers, we have developed a relationship with Grace & Ib. Thank you to all who have helped

us sponsor these wonderful children throughout the years. Please continue to keep Grace & Ib in your prayers!

8-8 oz. glasses of water a day). 18. Check in with yourself (ask yourself why you are overeating, and address the reasons). 19. Ditch the diet mentality (don’t go on fad diets, choose healthy eating as

a lifestyle change). 20. Break old habits (identify unhealthy behaviors, and slowly make changes). 21. Eat healthy fats (add healthy fats such as nuts, olive oil, avocados, etc. to your diet). 22. Keep your

goals in mind (know your short term and long term goals). 23. Get help if you need it (seek professional help if you feel you have an eating disorder or need nutritional advice).

“Thank Offering” for Caring & Sharing A table will be available for Caring & Sharing “Thank Offering” donations at our Thanksgiving Eve service on Wednesday, November 21st, 7:00 p.m.

Caring & Sharing has special requests for each community church for items to be used in the Christmas boxes they provide to the families they service.

OSLC members have been asked to donate packaged fruit snacks and boxes of crackers such as Ritz, Wheat Thins, saltines, etc. These items may be brought to

the Thanksgiving Eve service or at any time. Nonperishable food items, paper products and monetary donations are also greatly needed.

Please remember December is OSLC’s month to donate items to Caring & Sharing. A list will be posted on the entryway tables of items needed.

2. Know your weaknesses (keep temptations out of your home). 3. Don’t ban all your favorite foods (allow yourself a treat every once in a while, eat your treats in moderation). 4. Try volumetrics (fill up on healthy foods so you don’t indulge in

unhealthy foods). 5. Avoid eating from containers (measure your portions according to serving sizes). 6. Reduce stress (find ways to cope with stress to avoid stress eating).

7. Practice mindful eating (focus on your thoughts and senses as you are eating). 8. Eat fiber-rich foods (satisfies and keeps you full for longer). 9. Eat regular meals (don’t skip meals). 10. Keep a food

journal (keep track of all the food you eat). 11. Dine with like-minded friends (choose those who also like to make healthy choices). 12. Fill up on protein (choose protein rich foods to help you fight

cravings, and fight off hunger). 13. Stabilize your blood sugar levels (choose foods that help keep your blood sugar stabilized). 14. Slow down (take your time eating and chew your food thoroughly).

15. Watch your alcohol intake (do not drink, or limit yourself to one beverage). 16. Plan ahead (always have healthy choices on hand). 17. Replace sugary drinks with water (an average adult should drink

8-8 oz. glasses of water a day).

A list will be posted on the entryway tables of items needed.

packed and delivered 37 quilts, 3 blankets, 39 school kits and 31 personal care kits. We are blessed to share our love of Jesus with so many in need in His kingdom and we thank all who contribute in any

way to make this ministry possible each year.

Reminder...there will be no quilting in December. We will resume in the new year on January 14 th! Janice Andersen & Donis Hansen, Co-chairs of Mission Action

I was in the hospital. Special thanks to my family for all the trips

they made and for staying with me

while I recuperate.
