Interdependence
We all like to be the strong one, the one who needs no help, the one who
gives aid to others. Then life can turn on a dime and we find ourselves
needing the helping hands of others. Being dependent on others can be
quite uncomfortable, even if it is, at times, necessary.
While we celebrate our country’s independence from Great Britain, we
also realize how much we depend upon one another. Interdependence is a
more realistic word to describe our life as the Church. Jesus is our head
and we have been knit into a mystical body where when one rejoices, all
rejoice; while at the time one grieves, we all grieve.
Thank you for thinking of those who have no where to go to get away from
the heat! Bottles of water and funding to assist with AC costs at Grace
Lutheran as they provide shelter are beautiful examples of our
interdependence. While we just delivered 4,000 bottles, we learned that is
merely a one-day supply! Thank you for your generosity!
The Apostle Paul said it well in his letter to the church in Galatia: “Bear
one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Loving one another is not just great interdependence, it is the very “law of
Christ.”

2018 Synod Assembly Notes
An amazing experience! That’s how I would sum up my time at the 2018 Synod Assembly.
This was not the first Assembly I had attended but it was the first time I had been to one that
elected a new Bishop. Now I’m not exactly a “doubting Thomas” but it was very difficult for me
to understand how the election process was supposed to go. “What do you mean nobody puts in
for the office ahead of time? They just wait to be moved by the Holy Spirit? Then everybody
can nominate someone? That’ll never work!” Now of course it works! It’s been working in this
manner for many years. I just had to see it for myself. The opening service on Thursday
evening was very moving. The sanctuary was filled with beautiful voices that rose to the
rafters and spilled over into every listening heart. Then the process started, and it was
completed 5 votes and two days later. Our Synod made history! The final three nominations
included a man of Hispanic heritage and a female. The Reverend Deborah Hutterer was
elected as our new Bishop. There were several other items of business conducted at this
Assembly that were of general interest. Our own Pr. Mills was elected as a member of the
Synod Council! Several resolutions were passed. If you’re interested in finding out what else
was discussed, let me know. I would be glad to share my notes with you and talk about the
entire experience. Thank you all for the opportunity to represent Our Saviors at this
important Assembly.

Pr. Bill opened the meeting speaking of heard hearts and the man with a withered hand that Jesushelped. Then he led us in a prayer.
New Business: The Summer Celebration was discussed. The date was moved to August 4th toavoid interfering with the Multi-Generational VBS. The time was set from 6 – 8 in order to givepeople from East Mesa a chance to get out to Gold Canyon. Janice will speak to Richardconcerning music.
Old Business:God’s Work Our Hands in September will be “Packages From Home”. This is a 501c3
organization that collects and distributes items to American servicemen and their serviceanimals overseas. We will be collecting items and packaging them. Kim McCracken wasgiven the lists of items being collected for the servicemen and their service animals. TheVBS children will write notes to the soldiers or their service animals to be included in thepackages and collect some of the items.
The handrail to the altar area has been installed. The Property Team has been asked tocheck into a handrail up to the second level of the choir risers.
The Synod Assembly will be held in Oro Valley June 14th through the 16th . LeonardSchroeder will be attending as a voting member.
Harmony wellness will be at the Gold Canyon campus June 14th and 15th .Worship times were discussed once again. Janice has compiled the information emailed to
her by members. There were only ten responses. One wanted to leave things as theyhave been, two chose Option A, three took Option B and 2 selected Option C. As thechoices of service times were included in the newest Newsletter and online, it was decidedto wait another month for a decision on whether to make a change. It is hoped morepeople would voice their concerns.
Pastors and StaffPr. Bill is aware that the security cameras are not working. He will work on that problem.
Media Com has started construction for our service. The installation date is estimated tobe 7-13-18. With this new – faster internet service we will be able to stream live servicesfrom Gold Canyon. The cost of the equipment will be about $2,400. The EndowmentCommittee may be able to fund this project. The Staff seems to be solid.
Pr. Tina will be on vacation July 9th through July 20th. She will be available for emergenciesthe 16th through the 20th. Joel Wudel from the Mission Investment Fund, Pr. Terry andPr. Deb Hutterer will be filling in.
Kim McCracken brought information on first aid and CPR training. The company isAmerican Emergency Response and there is a charge. It was suggested that she contactthe Fire Dept. to see if they would provide a reminder class on CPR and use of our AED(defibrillator). We probably have few members who could get up and down to the floor to

earn a CPR card. Kim passed around pictures of the high school graduates from EastMesa. The family resource Center, formerly known as Family Spot, is expanding theirservices to 6 days week beginning in July. Kim will be at Gold Canyon with the youthfrom the Gathering on July 15th. July 29th is the Family Service with the Noisy Offering.
Dave Reurink – A discussion was held on the lock system for the front gate and office door.The office staff is uneasy with either of those areas being unlocked automatically It wasdetermined that they should be kept locked at all times. Dave will follow up on this item.The AC is working with the addition of two cards. Dave thinks he may have a contactthat can get us these cards at a discount. The gate at the entry for the electrical box isbinding. Dave is having trouble finding a jack that he can get under the gate to even itout.
Ministry Chair Reports (only those with current activity are shown below)Administration – Susan Drane The only item of news is the addition of Kim McCracken as
a full time employee with the title of Ministry of Discipleship.Discipleship – Suzy Cavoto - Bible Study at 10:30 is working out very well. Attendance is
up over either the 9:00 or 10:30 Luther Study. Hebrews is finishing up. July throughSept. we will be studying the book of Daniel. October to November will be Noah followedby Geneses from November until Lent. Discipleship trips: Planning a cruise to Europe tocover the Pauline area including Patmos; a trip to Israel in 2019; a trip near MunichGermany that is done every 10 years in 2020. She is working on dates for movies andkeeping Terry in mind for a High Season night Bible Study. The next discipleshipmeeting is in August. It has been mentioned that we could use a Bible 101 and a Theology101 class in 4-6 week segments.
Good News – Mile Johnson is looking into advertising for VBS and making scripts for theJesus stories.
Missions – Janice and Robert Cunningham delivered 32 cases of water to Heat Respite atGrace Lutheran Church in downtown Phoenix. They were very appreciative of thisdonation. Janice mentioned that the collection of school supplies for Concordia CharterSchool were very sparse. She suggested collecting again in July when they are on sale atall the stores. Pr. Bill suggested checking with Richard Falk who is Mission Chair.Janice will call him as he does not have access to emails during the summer. We werereminded that Sonya handles the add loop for the projector, the e-news, the worship powerpoint, the bulletin and the newsletter. So if we want anything in these publications, she isthe one to contact. It was also suggested that we deliver the Mission checks where wehave local access to the receiving organization.
Property Team – Robert Cunningham reported that the handrails have been installed. He isalso checking on a handrail for the choir second level choir members. New aerators for thebathrooms have been installed and the back gate has been painted. It was noticed thatour garbage cans are missing. Robert will check with RAD to see what happened.
WELCA - Susan Drane reported that WELCA will not meet until October.WORSHIP – Richard Wall is considering doing the Heartland service for August.
Our next meeting is on July 3rd , 2018 at 5:30pm.

The East Mesa Coordinating Committee met June 11, 2018 at 7:00 P.M.

Pastor Bill opened with prayer.
Family Promise will be held the week of July 15-July 22. Volunteers are needed.
I-Help – Linda4-6 more twin-size blankets are needed for the ladies.
Pastor BillInstallation of the electronic sign is progressing. The county is in the process of reviewing the site plans.
The TV in the back of the sanctuary is inadequate to project clear images. A donor has paid fora new projector which will be installed on June 13.
Property Team – Dave The status of various items on the “TO Do” list were discussed including LEDlighting in the chapel, parking lot lights, options for window coverings in the nursery and ice machinerepair/ replacement.
Discipleship- Cindy Discussion included Bible study schedule, the trip to the GreekIsles/Oberammergau in September of 2020, & movie nights @ both campuses. Pastor Terry will beconducting 1-2 Bible studies during the year.
Sunday School and Youth – Kim VBS to be held June 18-22 at East Mesa and July 15-19 at GoldCanyon;Family Resource has been approved for a grant which will expand the program to 6 days per weekbeginning July 1; ELCA Youth Gathering will be held June 26- July 1 in Houston. Numerous activitiesare scheduled throughout the summer.
WELCA/Administration – Susan Various areas including communications, computer systems, andefficiency are being reviewed
Music – John Bell pads are ready. The cost is less than anticipated.
Hospitality/Kitchen – Phyllis Looking forward to helping with VBS and other youth activities.
Status of Worship The committee agreed to keep the 7:30 AM Sunday Service in the Sanctuary, and torevisit at a future date if necessary.
The meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer. Next meeting date is July 9, 2018.

GOLD CANYON WORSHIP
”I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and theywill listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.” - John 10:16 NRSV
Jesus is passionate about all of the sheep, including those outside of the fold. We have been sorichly blessed with a wonderful community of worshippers by the Holy Spirit. At the sametime, as we take Jesus seriously, we are filling up at our 10 am service. This virtually prohibitsus from inviting or welcoming others from outside of “this fold.”
Church growth experts argue that a sanctuary is functionally full when it reaches 80% of ca-pacity (some people like a little personal space). There are a limited number of solutions availa-ble, only a few which make sense: 1. Push out the walls to add more seating; 2. Build a largersanctuary; 3. Add additional worship time(s) to make room.
As a coordinating committee, we have been wrestling for two months as to how to do this faith-fully. We would like to invite you, as part of the Gold Canyon branch of Our Savior’s Lutheran,to join us in prayer and fasting on Saturday, May 19th, to seek God’s wisdom on how we mightreach more of those whom Jesus so loves. So far, we have looked at three options for high sea-son:

By adding a service between the two Sunday services, we allow room for all of us to welcomeand invite those who are not of “this fold.” As with any change, there is the unknown. Yet Godcontinually calls us out of our comfort zones to expand God’s kingdom work.
One of the beauties of our worship space, is that with our flexible seating, we can arrange thechairs to reflect the size of the worshipping community to a point. We can expand/contract ourseating as necessary on a week-to-week basis. If this is indeed of God, we can all expectantlyparticipate in what God is doing in our midst.
