AMPLIFICATION DEVICES ARE AVAILABLE FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT.

A CENTERING THOUGHT:

The Ozarks are just as stunning as everyone said they were, but they’re not the wild

swamplands of Florida that we left behind.

Stubbornly, I point out these discrepancies to my children, willing them to remember the

vocabulary of our shared homeland. But when we left, they were of such an age that they

hadn’t yet built up such loyalties, and after a while they look at me with benign tolerance

when I describe to them the smell of orange blossoms that floated through the open window

as I sang them to sleep, or the way they’d gorge on juicy u-pick persimmons until their small

stomachs bulged so much I had to adjust their carseat buckles on the ride home. They don’t

share my memories. They hear them like words from a story that trails off nebulously. “Then

what happened?” “Well, then we moved…”

Take courage, friends, the way is often hard,

The path is never clear and the stakes are very high;

Take courage, for you are not alone, For you are not alone. Blessed Be.

MUSIC NOTES: American pop music and jazz have always been very rooted in Place: the Delta, New Orleans, Kansas City, Chicago, New York, Nashville. And today’s music is highly evocative of the tutelary spirit (the genius loci) of the places it names.

SECOND SUNDAY OUTREACH OFFERING – People Acting Together in Howard (PATH) is a local organization of member congregations and community groups, an affiliate of the national network, Metro IAF. Members and allies find ongoing issues for social change and greater justice. We train all kinds of leaders to take strategic action. UUCC is an active founding institution, and Rev. Paige Getty now co-chairs PATH. Current issues include public school equity, immigrant inclusion and defense, mobile home park organizing, and building a new interfaith Clergy Alliance. Your gift supports a lean budget, with one full-time staff organizer, and access to regional and national strategy and training. Help build long-term and deep power in Howard County, across a broad base, when you give generously.

IN THIS MONTH OF BLESSING, WE ARE KICKING OFF A SUMMER OF RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS. We’d like to encourage all of you to join us! Each Sunday, the children will hear a story, work on plans or a gift, and commit to carrying out at least one Random Act of Kindness during

the week. We’ll ask the parents to report back to us, and we’ll be placing hearts on the bulletin boards in the office suite. Will you join us? Each time you see someone from UUCC committing an act of kindness, would you write it on a heart and pin it to our board in the UUCC commons area? Let’s see how much delight and wonder we can add to the world over the summer! WAKE NOW OUR VISION LEGACY CHALLENGE – You may have received a brochure in the mail on the Wake Now Our Vision Legacy Challenge. We are excited to announce that through this program, and for a limited time, you can have an immediate impact on the UUCC Endowment Fund—without needing to contribute any cash amount at this time! You simply register a pledge of a percentage or fixed amount of your assets to be distributed after death. The new Wake Now Legacy Challenge match contributes an immediate 10% cash match to the UUCC Endowment Fund as you register and designate the UUCC Endowment Fund as a beneficiary of your legacy gift. For detailed information on how to participate or if you have any questions about the Legacy Challenge, contact [email protected].

UUCC’s KARUNA MINISTRY is a lay team of trained pastoral caregivers who are available to serve you in times of transition, sorrow, illness, grief, celebration, or joy. If you would like to speak to a caregiver, contact us at:

[email protected] or call Candy Wachterman at 443-802-6014. NAMETAGS: ☼ Please wear your nametag, especially during coffee hour! ☼ Nametags are stored in the new nametag cabinet in the back of the

sanctuary. They are arranged alphabetically by last name. ☼ New nametags can be requested at the Welcome (Greeter) Tables, or by

writing your name on the pad sitting on the top of the cabinet.

JOIN OUR MERRY BAND OF AUCTIONEERS! The UUCC Auction Team is already preparing for this year’s auction and we’d love to have you join the fun. We’re looking for volunteers for manageable but important tasks, from website work and data entry to donor outreach and Sunday morning skits. There’s also no better time than summertime to become a UUCC Auction donor. Take a few minutes while you’re lounging by a pool or swatting bugs at a

campsite to figure out a donation. And if you need ideas, come talk to us! Members of the Auction Team will be at coffee hour today. Or e-mail us at [email protected]. The 2018 UUCC Auction will happen Sat., Nov. 10th. THE FOOD INSECURITY COMMITTEE NEEDS YOU! It’s alarming at how empty our inventory shelves are. Please don't forgot the hungry children we are helping. The food insecurity committee has taken a huge leap of faith and trust and agreed to provide breakfast in June and July for 150 children (just one day). Please drop of food anytime we need: cereal, juice and fruit cups for Talbot Springs this summer. Peanut butter and jelly, granola bars, spaghetti sauce, pasta, tuna helper, beans and rice. All you have to do is drop it off at UUCC in the old kitchen across from the new one. Please help!

ONE HOUR MEMBERSHIP SESSION WITH REV. PAIGE – TODAY at 11:30am in the Chapel: Do you feel like you are ready to deepen your relationship with UUCC and are considering taking the formal step of becoming a member? Have you attended the “Get Connected” class or any portions of the class in the past year or two? Or maybe you have been a Friend of the Church

for a while and are considering taking the step to membership? Come and spend an hour with Rev. Paige Getty! Rev. Paige will talk about the privileges and responsibilities of being a member of UUCC. After our talk, the membership book will be available to sign if you are ready. Looking forward to seeing you there!

BLACK LIVES MATTER VIGIL – Join us for our regular 2nd Sunday Black Lives Matter Vigil TODAY from 4-5pm at Columbia Mall, at the intersection of Governor Warfield Pkwy. & Windstream Dr. Stand up for justice in a world that still shows us every day that Black lives matter less than other lives.

SUMMER'S A GREAT TIME TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE! With the kids home for the summer, have you thought about volunteering together? Helping local seniors get to their appointments, go to the grocery store, attend faith services and more as a

Neighbor Ride driver is a fun and flexible way to give back. Volunteering to give seniors the "wheels" they need to stay active and independent also offers a great inter-generational family service experience when kids go along for the ride. Join us for volunteer orientation at 5570 Sterrett Place, Suite 102 - Columbia 21044 any Tuesday at 9:30am or contact Patrice Cerwonka or Holly Waddell at 410-884-7433 or [email protected] to learn more. DEEP LISTENING MEDITATION GROUP invites you to come together in silence every Tues. at 11:30am-12:30pm. This group is for people who are starting a meditation practice or are in practice or want to stay in practice. We will explore rich and diverse traditions of meditation in the first 15 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of silence and 15 minutes where we collectively hold a space of deep listening for those who choose to share personal reflections on the meditation experience. This group will be guided by Jean Joklik, a trained facilitator of Centering Prayer and a practitioner of many forms of meditation for the last 25 years. Questions? Contact [email protected].

THE MEDITATION GROUP meets every Tuesday at 7pm. Learn the techniques of Mindfulness Meditation from experienced group members. Mindfulness will benefit both your personal life and your relationships with others. Contact Jerry Rescigno at [email protected] or Linda Uphoff at [email protected] for more information.

Paul Ballard, Assistant Attorney General, Counsel for Health Decisions Policy and the Office of Health Care Quality, will present slides, answer questions, and engage in discussion with us. This is a more in-depth follow-up to information provided in the Facing Death with Life class, and information shared during Seasoned Souls meetings. Thanks to Laverne Ball for coordinating with the speaker. Pre-registration is required at http://tinyurl.com/UUCC-AdultREd

2018 MEMORIAL PLATE ORDERS – Deadline: June 15th. In 2009 UUCC and CUMC worked together to create the beautiful patio, install a memorial plaque, and enhance the gardens. We are currently accepting orders for memorial plates inscribed with the names of your loved ones. We will add the new plates to the granite plaque. The plates are on the memorial plaque by donation categories: Oak ($1,000);

Magnolia ($500); Rose ($250); and Iris ($100). The “Oak” plates are 1.5” x 4.5”, and the others measure 1” x 4.5”. Visit https://uucolumbia.net/2018-memorial-plate-orders/ to download an order form. For more information, please contact Pat Heidel (410-884-6983) or [email protected]

THE NEW UU – ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION SERIES: Tues., June 19th from 7-9pm – The New UU is for adults of all ages and life stages who are new to Unitarian Universalism. FILM FORUUM on Tues., June 19th at 7pm! Please join us to watch After Life (Wasdafuru raifu) (1998)! What is the one memory you would take with you? This Japanese film with subtitles, Wandafuru raifu, quietly and tenderly explores the question how to embrace our most important life moments. It challenges us to consider how we think of ourselves and our own meaning by depicting a bureaucratic processing center for those moving from this life to the afterlife. Winner of seven festival and film critic awards, this 1998 film takes its time to unfold the story of both the sojourners and the administrators of the system that uses the limited resources they have to lovingly capture a single memory that will be the one remembrance carried over the transom to eternity. If you are prone to nodding off in movie theaters, bring a pillow; this is the antithesis of "action packed." But careful viewers who enter into the story and the characters will find beautiful performances and exquisite storycraft.

SEASONED SOULS ID THEFT on Thurs., June 21st, 1-2pm – Identity theft is an important concern these days. Join the Seasoned Souls to learn more. Jeff Karberg, JD, the Identity Theft Program Director in the Consumer Protection Division of the MD office of the Attorney General, is our guest. Mr. Karberg will give a presentation on how to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft and what to do if you think you have been victimized. He

will also explain common ID theft scams and recent developments in Maryland’s ID theft laws. Thanks to Laverne Ball for coordinating the invitation. You are also welcome to join the Elders (brown bag) lunch just prior, from 12-1pm in the same room.
