Assistant Operations Manager Sport and Leisure(Operations and Facilities and Sport and Service Development)

Main Purpose of Job

To assist and deputise for the Operations Manager for Sport and Leisure in the co-ordination of the corporate approach to Sport and Leisure in line with the Council’s scheme of delegation and be responsible for implementing this in the day-to-day management of the swimming pools and sports facilities. Ensuring all safeguarding and health and safety procedures are in place. To lead and manage projects as required, reporting directly to the Operations Manager for Sport and Leisure.

Main Duties

1. To assist the Operations Manager in co-ordinating and managing resources as required. Assisting the Operations Manager Sport in the development, co-ordination, implementation and review of the annual Operational Plan for the service area, incorporating the Council’s risk management procedures.

2. To assist the Operations Manager in ensuring that management functions of the service including recruitment, supervision, employee development, training, performance management and personal development are implemented in line with all Council policies and procedures.

3. To oversee the management of the service areas budget/s including monitoring and reporting and the preparation of estimates as required by the Operations Manager Sport and Leisure in accordance with the Council’s policies and procedures.

4. To assist with the marketing and promotion of the service to increase revenue through successful programming of the facilities to reflect the needs of the community and to ensure that the balance of the activity programme provided reflects the needs of the councils vision whilst maximising income.

5. To assist with day-to-day management of human resources within the service area, in line with the Council's Policies.

6. Responsible for the implementation of corporate procedures and policies to ensure the safe operation of all of the council’s sports facilities, in line with the correct Council policies and procedures.

Additional Duties – Assistant Operations Manager Sport and Service Development

1. Support the Operations Manager in reviewing, developing and implementing a revised Sports Development function to align with corporate activity, including events, health and well-being and strategy development. Act as the lead officer for Sports Development activity and initiatives.

2. Review and develop a retail and income generation offer for the service aligned to income growth.

3. Identify opportunities for customer development, working with other services and Communications and Marketing to develop a strong customer offer.

4. Develop opportunities for appropriate external funding, such as from national governing bodies and Sport England, which supports service and corporate goals. Preparing funding bids and monitoring of capital and revenue programme spend and the preparation of estimates associated with the projects.

5. Develop and implement an ethos of customer service excellence within the service, linked to management competencies.

6. Provide management support to service projects, for example the construction and development of Ransomes Sports Ground.

7. Manage service staff as appropriate in line with the Council’s policies.

8. Provide management cover for the Operations Manager and Assistant Operations Manager Operations and Facilities as required.

Sport & Leisure

Ipswich Borough Council owns and manages a range of sports and leisure facilities located around Ipswich, offering residents and visitors many opportunities to take part in sport and activities. At each site you will find friendly teams who will be able to assist you. We operate the following facilities:

Swimming Pools

Crown Pools features 3 separate pools: Competition Pool, Leisure Pool and Teaching Pool. The Competition Pool is an eight lane 25 metre pool which accommodates swimming lessons and aqua fitness classes. The pool also holds regional and national swimming events with spectator seating. The Leisure Pool is ideal for families and children, offering a range of activities for the children such as a mushroom fountain shower and Freddie the frog slide and wave machine. We hold regular swimming sessions for all ages in the teaching pool, ideal for babies, toddlers and adults. We offer programmed lessons as well as public swimming.

Fore Street Baths is an elegant 25 yard Victorian facility, which caters primarily for training courses and private hire, however holds swimming lessons and public swimming.

The pools have approximately 620,000 visits per year therefore there is a busy, fast moving working environment which is customer focussed.

Sports Centres

Ipswich Borough Council operates four sports and community centres around Ipswich: Northgate Sports Centre, Maidenhall Sports Centre, Gainsborough Sports Centre and Whitton Sports Centre.Each of the sports centres offers a range of activities to all, including: Badminton, Squash, Tennis, Hockey, Football, a variety of fitness classes and junior holiday activities.

Each sports centre offers a varied and changeable programme to its 500,000 visitors per year.

Gyms

We currently have four operating Profile Fitness Suites situated in four locations: Crown Pools, Gainsborough Sports Centre, Whitton Sports Centre and Maidenhall Sports Centre. All members of Profiles can use the facilities at any one of our Fitness suites. All of our gyms have a vibrant social yet relaxed atmosphere and have personal training lounges.

We currently have around 2500 active gym members who we take care of and help by offering an exceptional customer focussed experience.
