In this magazine, we have talked of therecycling in the Berguedà, and the recyclingin Vastërvik. We have had the choice tocompare how we recycle here and howSwedish people recycles in Vastervik. Wehave improved a lot our learnings about thistopic, before this work, we didn’t know almostanything about the recycling and these workhas given us the opportunity to learn thesethings. We have had to do interviews to somepersonalities knowledge in the recycling, wealso have done survey to the students in ourhigh school, opinion articles and informationarticles. We have used different languagesand Swedish students have helped us inmany things. After this work we know that theBerguedà’s recycling have suffered a veryimportant improvement in the last ten yearsand now we can find containers of al l the

types in almost al l the region, and the peopleis recycling even more than in the past, but

we must recycle more than now. Wecompare the recycling in Berga and inVästervik and we have observed that inVästervik started to recycle some yearsbefore than in Berga. To do this work we havehad to organize the work very well and it hasbeen a difficult job because we had to searcha lot of things, but final ly we have finished themagazine and we are proud of the work thatwe have done. This magazine have made usto know how to use new computerapplications, new languages, and someinformation about the actual ity topic of therecycling, a thing which all the people shoulddo and know how we have to recycle if wewant to find a clean planet some years ago.

I 'm writing this letter because I want tocomplain about an event that I l ived last week. The history is the next: Last weekend when Iwent to throw the rubbish I got very angry. I hadto throw the paper and bottles because theprevious day I did a dinner with my friends athome. When I arrived at the containers I founda lot of rubbish on the ground out of thecontainer. This munt was of bottles andplastics. I supposed the guilty of this event wasthe owner of the bar situated in front of myhome. I could throw the paper but not thebottles. Then I decided to go to the bar to speakto the owner about this problem. I told to themhe must throw the rubbish in the containers andnot put these next to them. His answer was: Ican’t waste my time putting the rubbish into thecontainers. I ’ve coustumers to

attend. I f my rubbish disturbs you, you can put itinto the containers.Logical ly I left the bar really angry but I went tothrow the bar’s rubbish into the containersbecause another person didn't have the sameproblem as me when he wanted to throw therubbish.I think that the council should have an employerwho looks after that people throw the rubbish intothe containers. I f he catches someone leaving therubbish in the street this person would have to paya fine. Perhaps it would be a solution becausepeople to throw the rubbish into the containersand not leaving it near them. I t’s real ly disgustingto find rubbish in the street and it makes stinkshorrible.

Hello, I am writing this letter to express mythoughts about the recycling in the Berguedà.I think that in these years, the recycling in theBerguedà has evolved a lot. I t's true that itcould be better but it's organized well .In the small vi l lages of the Berguedà, we canfind containers of the principal types and inthe principal towns: Berga, Puig-reig andBagà we can find al l the different types ofcontainers. In al l the towns we can find thecontainers of these fractions: paper, glass, packaging and rejection and now the organic-matter container it is almost everywhere. I amvery happy with the manage of the recyclingthese last years because some years agothere were only containers of al l the principalfractions in the principal towns of the

Berguedà and now we can find them in al l theregion.

I think that the recycling in our region is improving alot and in a near future the recycling in this regionwil l be excellent and the people wil l recycle morethan now.

Page 9: OUR RECYCLE MAGAZINE

There are many reasons for the reason thatmany people don’t recycle yet. Somereasons are for example the laziness thatmakes people don’t recycle because for thepeople it is more convenient to put al l therubbish in the same container because theydon’t have to do the effort of looking whatgoes to each container, another reason isthat there are small towns where there aren’tcontainers of al l fractions and the peoplewhich l ive in these places can’t recycleeverything, and another reason is that thatpeople do not know exactly how to recycle. This problem has long lasting, people havean awareness about the issue of recycling, but much of the population does not knowhow to recycle and knows that eachcontainer and this entai ls morecomplications the time to select theSelective why it is important to know whatgoes to each container:

QQuuèè hheemm ddee ffeerr ppeerr rreedduu ii rr eell ccoonnssuumm eenn ll eessnnoossttrreess ll ll aarrss??

In the historic scale, we are recycling in a massive form since little years ago, but the increase hasbeen so fast that we have to start to think that we have reached a limit. We have to reduce ourenergetic consume o try to use a lot more than now the energetic sources, because in the actual ity, almost of the 85 % of the energy that we consume comes from the energetic sources non-renewable.

On another hand, the polluting emissions that produce these combustibles are affecting hardly theatmosphere and the climate of the planet.

There are a lot of things that we can do toreduce the energetic consume in our homes, but the majority of the people don’t giveimportance to them. Many of the things thatwe can do in our homes to reduce theenergetic consume are:

• Think about the arrangement of the house.

• Think about the use that we do of thedifferent places.

• We never have to leave a light on, anopened appliance that we are not using andno leave the charger of the mobile, forexample, connected although we aren’tcharging it.

• We don’t have to leave the red or greenlight of an appliance (TV) if we can turn off itand can’t see the l ight (if it’s not turned offwell it wastes as the 25 % of the consume ifit’s turned on).

• We don’t have to leave an opened tap if wearen’t using in the same moment that wehave opened.

• Not to buy only fol lowing the publicity. Wedon’t have to buy an appliance that onlysaves a little effort. One example is theelectric toothbrush.

• Think about we can do to isolate the houseto avoid heat lost in the winter and avoid thesun entrance in the summer to don’t have touse a lot of energy.

Last Apri l , we went out in the streets of Bergaand we talked about the recycling with thepopulation of our region. We ask them somequestions l ike, if they recycle, if the recyclingis difficult or it’s a problem for them and if theyhave got some containers close to theirhouses. Everybody who were asked, answered the questions in a kind way, and weenjoyed a lot to interview the people of ourcity.

Although, in the region of the Berguedà, weonly recycle since 1 990, the population ofour region is very aware of the recycling. They are in favour of respecting andmaking sure everything about theenvironment. In general, the people of ourcity always recycle paper, plastic, glassand batteries. A lot of people recycle theclothes or they give them to an ONG Thereare some people who bring the oils to thetips. And the others rubbish waste theypour them in the container of the generalrubbish.

But we have paid our attention in one thing, thepeople of Berga do not recycle the organicwaste. A reason for the fact, is that the organicwaste is a very new recyclable waste and ourneighbours are not used to recycle it. I t is such anew recyclable wastethat in some towns of the region of the Berguedàthey sti l l can not recycle it get. I t is a bit difficultand hard to recycle, many people complainabout it, because you have to collect muchgarbage that you are used to pour it in thegeneral waste.

About the question of if the recycling is difficult oris a problem for them, a lot of people haveanswered that if you have some space at yourhome it is not difficult. They say that withoutspace, you can not recycle each waste indifferent boxes or small containers. To bring it tothe container, people said that for them it is not aproblem, they are already use to do it.

About the third question and the last one, if theyhave different container close to their houses, most people say that the container of generalwaste is near their houses. In fact, in Berga inmost of the streets there are containers of thegeneral waste. The other four type of waste, organic, glass, plastic and paper, are different. The container of the organic waste is sometimesnext to the general container and, there are morethan the other three. There are lots of the otherthree, and these three are usually together. Thepeople that we have askes, have them between50 and 1 00 meters far from their houses. Butnobody complains about the distance.

To sum up, the people of our region recycleeveryday more, and they are prouder about theimprovement that our town hall has imposed. One of them said that a lot of the people of theregion of Berguedà are working together to do ofour region, a cleaner and more beautiful region.

Nowadays, recycling is the priority of most ofthe cities around the world. Years ago, itwasn’t such an important thing for thegovernment, but now people want to preservetheir surrounding and want to keep the planetclean. For this reason, we have done twointerviews asking questions about therecycling. Our proposal is comparing howsimilar is the recycling method in Berguedàand in Västervik. We have asked to the townhall of Västervik and then we asked the samequestions in the local council of Berga.

The city of Västervik has been reclicl ing since1 976, sixteen years before Berga’s city, whichstarted recycling in 1 990. Both of them beganto recycle the same waste: paper, glass enplastic. However, Västervik was recyclingmetal too. Berga wil l start recycling thesekinds of products later.

In the two cities, the industries and factorieshave to fol low a protocol for the recycling. Most of recycled products are selected and

turned into new products that they do notcontaminate and they do not harm theenvironment. So we can say that there is acycle that helps to reduce and reuse.

Now, Berga and Västervik are cities cleanerthan in the past and that’s real ly important topreserve the environment. Like the Swedishcity, the Catalan has got many future plans thatwil l be applied in a few years.

The proposal of this projects is preserving theworld and reduce as much as we can, therubbish. Furthermore, government wantspeople to use products that can be recycledeasily. We want these projects to get successfulresults and we have to work all together toachieve a cleaner and beautiful world.

During these two weeks of March, journalists of our magazine, have done areport. The aim of this report is to know whorecycles and what. The report has been done in the high schoolof Berga, IES Guil lem de Berguedà, topupils of the same school. In the end, 238people have been interviewed. Thesepeople were born between 1 994 and 1 997.They have decided to do the questions tothese people because they are the fathersand mothers of the future and they wil l havea really important paper to save the planet.

The results of the report have been good.Nearly 70%, of people who we have asked to,recycle. I t is interesting to say that the peoplewho recycle more are the youngest of thesefour different ages. The negative side of thereport is formed by the pupils one year older, the people who were born in 1 998. Only 53%of them recycle. The other two levels, 3rd and4th of ESO, recycle a 62% and 75%respectively.

The troubles appear when we ask them whatthey recycle. Almost al l the people, of this70%, recycle paper, plastic, bottles, organica

to sum up, the things they can throw in thecontainers that we can find in the street.Against these good results, the percentagesgo down when we can’t throw the things inthe containers of the street if they are not inspecific locals or shops or we must go to thewaste tip. For instance clothes, batteries, medicinesa

The most negative result of the report hasbeen the recycling of medicines: only 30% ofpeople recycle medicines. Some people ofthe other 70% didn’t know where they couldrecycle their medicines! From the magazine we want to say to all ourreaders they must recycle their oldmedicines. You must take the medicines youdon’t use and bring them to the chemist’s.There, you find a special container to throwthem into it. Recycling a medicine is maybethe most important because there are a lotof people who need medicines and they can’thave them. Perhaps one day you wil l need aspecial medicine and if you don’t find itbecause someone has it at home you’l l getreal ly angry but if you find it becausesomeone has recycled it you wil l be verygrateful to him/her.

Another negative result is that not manypeople go to the waste tip. Only 43% of thepeople we have interviewed have gone to thewaste tip at least once to recycle something. We remember that the waste tip of Berga isin the industrial polygon in La Valldan. Thereare another two waste tips, one in Guardiolade Berguedà and the other one in Puig-Reig.To finish we want to remember all of you thatthe clothes’ containers are orange and biggerthan the normal. They are in some placesnear the other containers. They are propertyof “Grup Horitzó”. I f you don’t have acontainer near your home you can bring theclothes to the office of this group. I t issituated next to the local l ibrary.

We also want to remind that we must recycle batteries in the small containers that we find in manyshops. They have a triangular shape.

We hope that after reading this report everyone who recycles continues doing it and those who don’tdo it, start to do it.I f you want to know more things or activities related to recycling and the protection of theenvironment we recommend you the fol lowing websites.www.reciclem.es/cawww.jovenesverdes.orgwww.containersbergueda.comwww.greenpeace.org/espana
