Dear friends,

As an organisation, while there is still a lot more work for us to do and a many more milestones to be crossed, yet the year 2016 has been yet another year that made us stronger and more resilient in facing the challenges that lie ahead. We have been able to serve our customers and end-users better through our consistent customer-centric actions and initiatives.

Now, it’s good to look ahead and think about what 2017 may bring to us. I have been inculcated the habit of planning from my very early days by my beloved father and our revered Founder of Ramco group. He taught me the importance of planning day-to-day affairs for effective follow-up. It is now the time for you all to think of the year ahead to focus on your goals and chalk out your action plans. I’m sure by working together, keeping focussed on our priorities and putting customers first, we can realise our growth aspirations. I urge you to give your full commitment to fulfilling the task of building the organisation by reinvigorating our core competencies and displaying superior competitiveness.

While at the organisational level we need to have our strategies drawn for facing the challenges that lie ahead and ensuring growth, at your level as an employee, I would like every one of you to work in unison towards building a strong organisation and will urge you to remember the following three things:

First, maintain a strong sense of professional ethics and integrity without fail.

Second, make time for creative work. Don’t feel that you always must follow traditional procedures. Think of the ways by which you can improve the processes for increasing productivity, reducing waste, making them safer and simpler, and more customer-friendly.

Finally, I also advise each of you to find greater meaning in your work and take greater pride in our company’s culture and values, our technology and our products. This would help the younger generation of employees to integrate better with the organisation.

The year 2016 has drawn to a close. Looking back, despite the sluggish growth of industry and uncertain business landscape, we have achieved a moderate growth until last quarter and I attribute this primarily to our stringent financial discipline and operational efficiency. Through your constant efforts and commitment, we have been able to keep ourselves on the growth trajectory even during the difficult times. I would like to express my gratitude to you all for contributing to the Company’s growth.

As we commence the Year 2017, we are yet see any visible signs of immediate boost in the business environment. Although the economy is anticipated to bounce back in the coming year due to various macro-level initiatives, even such trend is unlikely to have any significant impact for us in the immediate term due to stagnant domestic demand. So it is bounden on our part to continue to demonstrate our operational versatility to build our core competencies, adapt to the constantly the dynamic industry environment, and collectively confront the challenges that lay ahead with a firm resolve and determination.

To sustain ourselves on the growth trajectory despite all challenges, we need continue to think like our customers to find what they really require and then deliver by leveraging on our superior quality, world-class technology and our value-added customer support services. That is how we can achieve our midterm goals and establish the foundation for the long-term sustainability and prosperity. We must also internally minimize waste by reducing our inventory and eliminate non-value adding activities while still managing our operations efficiently and effectively.

Mines Safety WeekMines Safety Week Celebrations 2016

(Tirunelveli Zone)Tamilnadu Mines Safety Association under the aegis of

Directorate of Mines Safety, Chennai Region celebrated the Mines Safety Week 2016 (Tirunelveli Zone) Final Day function at TAMCEM, Alangulam on 06th September 2016.

Around 100 mines from Tirunelveli Zone participated in the Zonal Level Competitions in A-Class, B-Class & C-Class mines category. Our Pandalgudi Limestone Mine won the FIRST PRIZE in the Overall Performance in A – Class Mines category and Maravarperungudi Kankar Mine won the SECOND PRIZE in the Overall Performance in B – Class Mines category.

Mines Safety Week Safety Week was celebrated from 06.09.2016 to 11.09.2016. The final day function was celebrated on 11.09.2015 at ICL Dalavoi

Various competitions such as Safety Speech, Safety Song, Safety Slogan, Safety Poster, First aid competition, and other trade tests were held.

Several companies including Dalmia Cement (B) Ltd, Chettinad Cements Limited, India Cements Limited, Ultratech, participated in the event.

Our Alathiyur Mines won the over- all Second Prize Tamilnadu Mines Safety Association presided over the function and distributed the prizes.

Way back in 1946-47, a small time agriculturist in Kuruviagaram village located 5 kms from Gummidipoondi, a distant north suburb of Chennai, started a Fair Price Shop for rationing of essential commodities. That gentleman was none other than Mr.K.R.Kannappa Chettiar, who later became a name to reckon with in cement trade in Chennai.

Through proper administration of the Fair Price Shop, he developed good relationship with the Revenue Department. He started a fertiliser shop in 1958-59 at Gummidipoondi, a time when our young and independent nation was putting in all efforts to create a boom in agriculture, which was the back-bone of the economy.

His business grew fast and took him to the next milestone in his journey in the year 1967, when he entered the cement trade. Those were difficult times when price and distribution of cement was controlled by the Government.

KRK as he was fondly called, used to receive cement by metre gauge wagons through Arakonam to Gummidipoondi railway siding, after several follow-ups with the authorities concerned. Sometimes, Tahsildar had to authorise the quantity to be given to him, followed by license issued by the District Collector, based on authorisation by the cement company. It was only in the year 1974 that road movement of cement started.

1982 saw the decontrol of price and distribution of cement. KRK’s son Mr.K.Jayaprakash, who runs the family business today along with his brother Mr.K.Murali, is a Post Graduate in Mathematics. Though he was associated with the said business even from the age of 15, he left the govt job of Asst. Prof of Mathematics in 1975, and fully involved himself in the business to help his father. He recalls those days with awe in his eyes even today. Lorry hire for a of tonne of cement from Kallakudi was Rs.27 and unloading was done at one rupee per tonne, something unimaginable today. At that time, KRK used to operate 16 sub-depots to ensure

wide and proper distribution of cement.

It was in 1971 that KRK got the dealership of RAMCO AC sheets. Eleven years rolled by, during which time AC sheets helped him to develop his business very well and he reached the enviable second position first at State Level and then at Regional Level, for both of which he was honoured by our Chairman. He never sold any other brand AC sheet till date. In 1979 they started a branch at Redhills, a suburb of North Chennai from where they operated surroundings of North Chennai.

In 1982, he got the allotment from Madras Cements for cement from Thulukkapatti factory. In 1985, Mr. KRK passed away. When Jayanthipuram factory commenced in 1986, Mr. Jayaprakash started to get loads from there. He fondly recalls the annual award functions which happened in presence of our Chairman. He recalls the speeches delivered by the Chairman during Award functions about ethics of business as well as his concerns about dealers well being.

Each function used to be arranged meticulously. Each and every detail starting with Bindu and flowers for the dealers’ wives and daughters was arranged with precision.

He recalls with pride the launch of RAMCO SUPERGRADE Pozzolana Portland Cement in 1998, a path-breaking initiative by the company, when the entire cement industry was focussed on selling Ordinary Portland Cement.

Mr.Jayaprakash fondly remembers that the entire marketing team of the company took charge of his family marriage functions and ensured that everything went on very well. Though Chairman couldn’t attend his first daughter’s marriage because of Sashti vratham on that day, he along with his family gave an

unforgettable reception at his Chennai Santhome Road residence on the very next day.

For his second daughter’s marriage in 2000, Chairman made it a point to reach the wedding venue well before Muhurtham time, sat through the ceremonies for close to two hours and left after blessing the newly-wed couple.

That he is affectionately called “Gummidipoondi Chettiar” by the Chairman is a matter of pride for Mr.Jayaprakash. He is full of appreciation for Ramco Cements for the culture of openness, spirit of discussion, interest to take care of dealer wellness and face to face talk.

The seed sown by Mr.K.R.Kannappa Chettiar has grown like a Banyan tree. Decades have rolled by and times are continuously changing, but what remains unchanged is the Bhandham of Mr. K. Jayaprakash and Mr. K. Murali with the RAMCO family.

On the occasion of our beloved CMD Birthday, JPM provided food, clothes, etc for orphans and needy people at Jaggayyapet

JPM unit has arranged free Medical camp and donated medicines at Tirumalagiri.

Jayanthipuram unit provided assistance to the Pushkaralu pilgrims during festive celebration from 12th to 23rd August 2016. As a part of “Vanamahotsava” project by Govt of AP, JPM Unit has distributed 5000 Tree saplings and it has been planted at nearby villages

LEPRA society – Sreyassu, conducted an education support programme at their Chillakallu centre. The society donated books and stationery to the school going children of the diseased. On this occasion, our Sr.President-Mfg. P.B.Gopala Krishna has donated Rs.10,000/- to LEPRA society.

Our Ariyalur Unit has been certified for 5S Implementation. Dr. Srivathsava, Executive Director of QCFI (India) is seen presenting the Certificate to Ariyalur Team.

Ramco Vidhyalaya, RRNagar has been Certified for 5S practices through JUSE, Japan. The Certificate was issued during NCQC 2016 held at Raipur.
