Welcome to Your HealthHello, I’m Sarah. I’m pleased to introduce to you our new mental health service, First Response. This team supports people of all ages experiencing a mental health crisis. (You can find out more about what we mean by a crisis on page 4).

First Response is one phone number available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It can be used by a friend or family member if they are concerned about someone too. It’s for anyone living in Bradford, Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven and you do not need to have used mental health services before.

Alongside other health and social care providers, First Response provides quick access to the right care if you are in crisis. Chris’ story on page 8 is a real-life example of where we hope to make a difference.

Mental ill health is common, with 1 in 4 people in the UK experiencing a problem each year. Most conditions are managed well through medication and/or therapy, but if your first experience of mental ill health is a crisis, or if you have an existing problem, we want you to feel reassured that trained professionals are just a phone call away.

The latest news from across our Trust

‘Good’ NewsThe Care Quality Commission (CQC) which regulates health and care services throughout the country rated the overall quality of care we provide as ‘good.’

The ‘Good’ rating follows an in-depth inspection of our services during June 2014. Inspectors visited wards, clinics and community teams and spoke with patients, carers and staff.

The CQC singled out our end-of-life services for particular praise, describing them as ‘outstanding’ in the area of ‘responsive’ and a national exemplar of a local service.

Simon Large, Trust Chief Executive, said: “The Board is delighted with the findings of the Care Quality Commission Inspection. We are one of the first mental health and community health trusts to undergo this new intensive and in-depth inspection process using clinical and patient experts alongside national inspectors. Overall the CQC rated our services as good, well led, with caring and professional staff.

The Friends & Family TestPatients using our services are being asked if they’d like to give feedback on the care they receive as part of the NHS Friends and Family Test (FFT).

The FFT is one question: “how likely are you to recommend the ward, clinic or service you have used to your friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?”

Community services, such as Health Visiting, District Nursing or Speech and Language Therapy, will offer patients the opportunity to leave feedback after every episode of care or contact. Patients receiving in-patient care on a hospital ward will be offered the same opportunity within 48 hours of being discharged.

Tracey Corner, Friends and Family Test Lead at the Care Trust, said: “We will use the feedback we receive to celebrate and build on what’s working well and identify areas where improvements can be made. All responses will be treated anonymously and care will not be affected in anyway.”

If you’d like to leave feedback on the care you have received visit: http://bdct.iwgc.net

Supporting people to get employmentWe have joined forces with the Centre for Mental Health* to offer people help with getting employment.

Making Work Work, a Department of Health funded project, will see 60 people who use our mental health services get paid work by 2016.

Nicola Lees, Deputy Chief Executive at Bradford District Care Trust, said: “We’re really excited to be part of this pilot project which will support people with long-term mental health conditions to get work.

“Professionals will support people to make an informed choice about work and will provide practical and emotional support to access and sustain paid employment.”

Q. I attend a service user support group. Members are concerned that if we call First Response the police would come and arrest us. Anonymous, 32, Queensbury

A. The First Response team works closely with ALL services, including emergency services, such as the police and ambulance service as these are often the first point of contact for people experiencing crisis.

The First Response team will be alerted to a crisis by either the person experiencing this, a carer or another service which may have concerns about someone. We will respond to this, wherever you are at whatever time and are committed to doing this in the quickest and safest way. We do this so that you can get support quickly to help you with your treatment and recovery.

First Responders are Mental Health Nurses and Social Workers. We provide guidance and support to help you manage how you are feeling and put you in contact with other services that will continue to work with you on your treatment and recovery. The main aim of the Response team is to keep you at home with support, where you are most comfortable; however, we can explore other options with you, if this is not manageable.

Your Story // Your Health

YourStory Sharing your

experiences.

A crisis can be very frightening. Not only for the person but for their carer too, especially when you see they might put themselves in a dangerous situation.

I’ve been caring for my wife and two daughters for 30 years. They all have long-term mental health conditions. A crisis doesn’t happen Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm. It can happen any day, any time. I’ve been known to make four or five phone calls in the middle of the night to everyone from our out of hours GP, to the emergency services, until I’ve got through to someone who can help us. Every time I have had to explain my situation. It’s an awful time.

If a member of my family is going through a crisis, they need help, and they need it straight away. Finding the right care at the right time is really important.

I have seen lots of changes to mental health services over the years and it’s now a lot better than it ever has been. I honestly think that if a service like First Response had been around 30 years ago, my family would not be in the position it is today.

What’s reassuring about First Response* is that if I ring I will speak directly to a trained telecoach who can quickly assess my family member’s needs. If urgent support is required a ‘First Responder’ will go to wherever they are, at any time of day or night. First Responders are mental health nurses and social workers and some can prescribe medication. They aim to keep people at home with support, but may recommend a hospital admission when people are extremely unwell.

It’s good to know the people answering the phone or visiting a member of my family when they are extremely unwell knows how to cope and respond to the situation. I know that they do because, as a carer, I’ve been involved in the recruitment of staff for the new service!

Even though my wife and daughters all have crisis plans, a dad is never off duty, they all ring me first! As a father and husband I never want to call the Police, but sometimes that’s all you’re left with. It’s so good to know that we can now call First Response instead at a time like this and get the right support.

Would you know what to do if you, or someone you cared for, experienced a mental health crisis?
