JESUS FEEDS THE CROWD WITH FIVE LOAVES AND TWO FISH.

Today we jump ahead in our reading of Matthew's Gospel to Chapter 14. Last week we heard Jesus conclude his discourse with the crowds about the Kingdom of Heaven. In Matthew's narrative, Jesus then leaves the crowds and returns to Nazareth, where he is rejected. Matthew then recounts the story of John the Baptist's arrest and exe-cution at the hands of Herod. Today's Gospel reading begins at this point.

Upon hearing the news of the death of John the Baptist, Jesus seeks to withdraw, but the crowds follow him. Jesus reaches out to them in compassion and heals the sick. At the end of a long day, the disciples encourage Jesus to send the crowds away so that they might find provisions for themselves. Jesus again responds with compassion for the

crowd. Jesus tells his disciples to provide food for the crowd. The disciples reply with a report of the meager-ness of their own provisions—five loaves and two fish. The result is the very familiar miracle of the multipli-cation of the loaves and fish. Matthew's Gospel tells us that 5,000 men were fed, and this number does not even include the women and children.

Jesus' blessing brought abundance from the meager provisions of the disciples. In this action, Jesus offers us a sign of the Kingdom of Heaven that he has been teaching about in the parables. A feast results from the smallest of portions—remember the mustard seed and the yeast. In this miracle we witness an example for Christian life and ministry. Even the smallest of offerings can produce abundant results when placed in the service of the Kingdom of Heaven.

We find the story of Jesus' multiplication of the loaves and the fish in each of the four Gospels. In the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, Jesus performs this same miracle on two separate occasions. The story of this miracle is an anticipation of the Eucharist in which we are fed by the abundant grace of God. The importance of the Eucharist has been a defining element of Christian life from the very beginning.

Rough Start to a New Year

Dear Friends,

I'm sure that all of us were very disturbed and disappointed by the invasion of the US Capitol by demonstrators on Wednesday, January 6th. We just put behind us 2020, a tough year, and as we enter into a new year, we have many things to be concerned about. This third surge of COVID-19 is worse than the previous two, and some of the experts say that January will be very challenging.

Thank God and the scientists that we at least have the vaccines to look forward to. Let’s be hopeful! Let's continue to be vigilant!

And let us redouble our efforts to pray for our nation: that we get through this time of transition, and that the suffering caused by the virus not be as bad as many predict. At times it might be difficult to realize that God is with us, but indeed He is!

As pastor, it is crucial for me to stay connected to as many parishioners as possible, even though usual ways of contact are limited. From time to time, I reach out to contact parishioners by telephone, but it would be impossible for me to call even most of our homes in a timely manner. So, I have enlisted a group of volunteers to assist me in this Care Calls outreach. You may have heard from or will be hearing from one of them sometime in the next few weeks. They won't be asking for money or anything, don't worry. Just reaching out to say hello and to connect with as many of our parishioners as we can.

However, that thought reminds me to say "thank you" to all of you who continue to mail in your envelopes or use electronic giving to support OMGC parish. Thank you for your generosity! We have even begun to receive checks in the mail from some people who live at a distance and watch our liturgies through their computers!

Roger and Carol Pisani, through their Sacred Doorways ministry, are sponsoring a one-evening or one-afternoon retreat titled Nourishing Hope. Please page 4 for that information.

Six months in, construction on the Pennswood Road Bridge has moved to our side of the railroad tracks. Next step is to dig a 40-foot-deep pit for the foundation for the new bridge.

The pedestrian walkway has switched back to our side of the bridge, between us and St. Luke’s. There’s a temporary wooden ramp that takes pedestrians from the bridge down into our plaza, where they’ll walk on their way to the path they installed through our lawn a few months ago. It’s fascinating to watch them work.

We continue to keep the church open for prayer and adoration during the day Monday to Saturday. Although we usually close the church after the last Mass on Sunday, all the other days we are open until about 6:00 PM for anyone who would like to spend quiet time in front of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

As pastor, I take very seriously my responsibility to pray for and intercede for you, my parishioners. I ask you also to pray for me and your fellow parishioners. As you know, many people are finding this pandemic and how it has changed our lives, very difficult.

Let us continue to pray for each other.

Christ's Peace, Friar Liam

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY OF SERVICE IN A COVID WORLD

Due to current restrictions, we are unable to hold our “normal” Martin Luther King Day of Service where we would gather in the gym with a variety of populations and create things for those less fortunate while mingling with new friends and Harcum Basketball Teams.

However, that should not stop us from making MLK Day a “Day ON” instead of a day off. This year, we will provide you with some ideas to complete as a family or as individuals. We will ask you to complete the activities at home, and drop them off, as a drive by, at the gym on Monday, January 18 between 2 pm and 3 pm. We will have people there to accept your donations and creations!

If you would like to participate in any of the following activities, please contact Karen Carey at [email protected] or 610-525-0147. Karen will provide you with any information you may need to complete the projects.

Create Valentine cards for shut ins. Complete a blanket for IHN Create a casserole for St John’s Hospice Do a local canned food drive in your

neighborhood for the Patrician Society Write a letter to a prisoner Create “Breakfast Bags” for a local soup kitchen Write a letter to Senators asking for funding for

the hungry in the world. Create a door decoration for residents at a local

Nourishing Hope

Wednesday Jan. 20, 2021 - 7pm-8:30pm -OR-

Thursday Jan. 21, 2021 - 1:30pm-3pm

Faith, hope and love - the three primary virtues. Each needs to be nourished by grace and our efforts. What are the great signs of grace God has given us

to nourish our hope, especially in this time of COVID?

Our time will include shared reflection on Scriptural and ecclesial themes.

Our retreat will be offered online via the Zoom platform and is free of charge.

Dr. Zeni Fox spent many years as Professor of Pastoral Theology at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Seton Hall University and served as chairwoman of the department of Pastoral Theology at the Seminary. She is the author of New Ecclesial Ministry: Lay Professionals Serving the Church (2002), co-editor of Called and Chosen: Toward a Spirituality for Lay Leaders (2005) and Lay Ecclesial Ministry: Pathways Toward the Future (2010). For more than ten years she served as an advisor to the committee of the US Bishops' Conference which developed Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord: A Resource for Guiding the Development of Lay Ecclesial Ministry. She frequently speaks on topics relative to the laity, lay ministry and the spirituality of the laity.

To register, send your name, phone number (in case of emergency),

and preferred date/time to Roger Pisani, Director of Music/Pastoral Assoc.

[email protected].

This program is made possible by Sacred Doorways.
