The Walker Scottish Rite Clinicfor Childhood Language Disorders

“Where do your children come from?” This is a

question we often hear when we give tours of the Clinic.

They are referring to what sections of the City/County our

children live in. Most are very surprised that we actually

have three locations in St. Louis as well as three sites

outside of St. Louis — Crystal City, Elsberry and Union.

Our therapists each have different Outreach Sites where

they provide services.

As this map shows, we cover a very large geographic

area. Our service sites sit in four Missouri counties

(including St. Louis City) and

our service area reaches to eleven counties.

Here is a brief overview of each site:

Crystal City – in Jefferson County. This

Outreach Site is hosted in one of the meeting rooms of

the local masonic lodge, the Shekinah Lodge. Therapist

Jacob Gutshall is there two days a week providing

individual therapy and screenings.

Elsberry - in Lincoln County. Therapist

Brandy Harrelson is the full-time therapist at this

Outreach Site which is open four days a week for both

screenings and individual therapy. The site is housed on

Elsberry’s main street and has large spaces for therapy

and a reception area.

Union – in Franklin County. Services are

provided in the upstairs offices of a two-story building

on the main square of town. While only open one day a

week, therapist Kate Bockhold, adjusts the therapy time

and homework to meet specific needs of children she

sees.

Headstart on Magnolia Avenue - in St. Louis City. Therapist Carrie Barry spends two mornings each

week at the Grace Hill Headstart Center where all her clients are

in the Headstart program. She does individual therapy as well as

screenings.

Headstart on South Grand Avenue - in St. Louis City. Sr. Margaret Guzzardo, therapist, has a case load

of both English and Spanish speaking children that she works

with each year. She also does screenings and individual therapy.

Main Clinic in Scottish Rite Cathedral – in St. Louis City. Screenings as well as both individual and

group therapy are held here and our audiologist does testing.

Therapist Laura Rose and Beth McCarthy work primarily in this

location along with the other therapists when they are not in their

Outreach Sites. On any given day, you may find three therapist in

the office, or you may find all of them. Graduate students from

Saint Louis University and Fontbonne University also work from

this office when they help with community screenings or assist in

group therapy.

The annual statistics for each site and each program are

highlighted on page 5 in our recap of the 2010 Annual Report

to the Community.

Together, in 2010, we helped more than 700 children

throughout the eastern Missouri area. Thank You!

From the Director’s DeskAt the Walker Scottish Rite Clinic, we are laser

focused on the mission of serving 2-6 year old

children with speech and language challenges in the

greater St. Louis area and meeting that need, focusing

on best practices and impactful outcomes. As you

see from our cover article, implementation of the

mission encompasses many sites, program partners

and collaborative resources to achieve clinic service

goals. The need for early childhood communication

services is growing and the Clinic strives to be there

to serve those kids in need by providing professional

therapy at no cost to reach our most at-risk kids in

St. Louis and surrounding areas.

We are pleased to share our 2010 Clinic data with

you as you will see on page 5. Data is key to benchmark

services, establish need and define accountability.

Utilizing service resources for the best outcome for our

kids is our goal. We take the mission seriously and are

thankful to each of you, our most valued resource, to

make this happen. Our donors, volunteers and funders

are vital partners to achieve significant collective impact

for our kids who are challenged daily with significant

communication delays.

And, remaining child-focused means we need to

remember to play! Playing at the Clinic is a productive

past-time, whether we’re raising funds by gearing up

for our inaugural benefit “Pull for Kids” Trapshoot

in September, glamming it up at the Annual KidTalk

Celebration in November or enjoying the links this

past June at our Golf Outing. Playtime with a purpose

can’t be beat — we invite you to join in the fun!

Thank you for taking the time to read this

newsletter and share in the stories of the Walker

Scottish Rite Clinic and the children we serve. We

invite you to follow us on Facebook, our website or

just come by and see magic in motion with the kids

we serve at any of our service locations.

In Partnership,

Sheri Mistretta, Executive Director

Golf Outing Scores Big!“It couldn’t have been a better day to

enjoy being out on the course and raising

money for kids who need speech and

language therapy,” says Cam Janssen,

right wing for the St. Louis Blues and

Celebrity Chair of the event. Little Aidan

and his mother, Emily, helped everyone

understand the challenges faced by

children with communication difficulties

(see article on Aidan on page 3).

Janssen joined more than 95 golfers

who turned out for the Clinic’s 14th

annual golf event. Tapawinago Golf

Course was again the site and did their

usual great job of making the day an

exciting one for all the golfers. Dinner and a live

auction emceed by the energenic Janssen followed the

day on the links and overall, the event grossed more

than $74,500 for Clinic programs.

Gale Bennington and G.T. Cozad, III served as co-

chairs and did a stellar job of leading the committee,

which included Joe Dale, Jim Hall, Howard Hurwitz,

Frank Mistretta, Andy Oberman, Evan Sowers and Vince

Weber. Bennington noted, “I am so grateful to have such

a great group of committee members, staff, volunteers,

and people like Cam Janssen that helped make this

tournament a tremendous success. Everyone brought

their expertise of ideas, support and experience in all phases of the process. It makes the co-chair

positions real easy when there is so much commitment toward the Clinic and kids for this fundraising

event. G.T. and I can’t say “Thank You” enough. You’re all, sincerely, winners in our book.”

A new addition to the event was the raffle of an iPad2. More than 951 tickets were sold resulting

in over $3,200 generated. A lucky winner in California, and family friend of a Clinic parent, is now

the proud owner.

Noted G.T., “I know that everyone involved with the Walker Scottish Rite Clinic appreciates the

generosity and support of all our players and sponsors. The entire event was spectacular. Seeing the

changes that the Clinic makes in kid’s lives makes all the hard work worthwhile. We look forward to

the continued success and growth of this great charity golf tournament.”

Many thanks to Cam Janssen the Celebrity Chair and our event sponsors - Adams Place Retirement

Community, Carr Lane Manufacturing, Cockerham Family, Commerce Trust Company, Cozad

We would like to share this letter (with permission)

sent to us by Melissa Brown whose daughter, Caitlynn,

attended the Crystal City Outreach Site for three years.

Meet a Clinic Family

Caitlynn and her mother practice with picture cards

We first had Caitlynn tested when she was two. We noticed that she wasn’t using words

clearly and had a hard time saying simple words like cat or dog. We brought her to the Clinic

to be tested and met Jacob (Gutshall), therapist. He told us our daughter has what they call a

middle lisp. It is very rare and not something that they saw often or worked with. We began

speech therapy two days a week at the Crystal City site with Jacob as her therapist.

Over the last three years, we have seen her go from a shy, non-talking little girl to a

bright and very smart, talkative, little girl! She is getting ready to start Kindergarten and

our school feels she will not have speech in school because of the great progress she has

made at the Walker Scottish Rite Clinic.I’m so glad we decided to put her in the program. The excellent staff (Jacob is the

best!) and the time and effort put into what the program has done for Caitlynn, we

could never thank you enough for. I recommend the Clinic to everyone and we will

always be grateful to the Walker Scottish Rite Clinic for everything they do!

~Melissa Brown, Caitlynn’s mother

Like most children, young Aidan had a lot to say. And try he did

to say it. But no one could understand him. Aiden was originally

diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech when he was just

20 months old. Althougth he made great strides in his speech

development through his participation in the state’s First Steps

early intervention program, Aidan was still diagnosed with a

severe speech delay in October of 2009 by the Clinic.

At age three, Aidan began to attend the Clinic and see Miss

Beth in the KidTalk Individual Therapy program. The initial focus was on

teaching Aidan to make one specific sound and then later, to blend sounds

together. First this was done in single words, then in short phrases, and finally

in sentences. His family was on board all the way with helping him at home

and with his homework. Month after month, Aidan worked at improving. And

improve he did! He has made consistent progress at the Clinic over the past

year and a half and now has a diagnosis of a mild speech delay. His mother,

Emily, put it this way, “Aidan started out with trouble communicating his

wants and

needs and was

often frustrated. We are so grateful to the Clinic for helping him become the

confident, sociable and talkative child he is today.”

During therapy sessions, Aidan loves to tell stories. Stories about places he

and his family have been, stories about his little brother, Colin, and his sister,

Sophia, and stories about things he does in therapy. He has a very creative

mind and is quite a good storyteller! And now Miss Beth and his family can

understand his stories — to the delight of all. Good Job, Aidan!

Meet a Clinic Child – Aidan

52 Club Luncheon Shows Value of Weekly Pledges

The 13th annual 52 Club

Luncheon on April 5, 2011,

brought two great Clinic stories

to the more than 56 attendees

at Sunset 44 Bistro in Kirkwood

— both excellent examples

of the importance of 52 Club

memberships and their ongoing

support for the children all 52

weeks of the year.

Jania and Paul Stus,

parents of little Logan,

shared the challenges

they faced in finding

help for their son. Logan

charmed the crowd

while he and his parents

were at the podium. His

parents have both been

very instrumental in

Logan’s therapy at home,

reading stories with him

and working on specific

sounds. Jaina also assisted

the Clinic with fundraising by chairing the successful Trivia Night in March

and is serving on KidTalk Celebration Committee currently.

Another Clinic ‘child’ in attendance was Amanda Twillman, now a

college graduate. Amanda was on hand to share her story and help

people understand the great gift she was given by attending the Clinic

and receiving speech and language therapy. Now a recent graduate of

Maryville University, Amanda plans to focus her professional career on

helping children with autism spectrum disorder (ADS).

The 52 Club Luncheon is the Clinic’s annual opportunity to thank these

wonderful donors for supporting the children all 52 weeks of the year. At the

time of the luncheon, there were 196 members in the club. See the related

article on Marietta Smith to learn more on the value of 52 Club membership.

52 Club Has Special “First” MemberPeople join the 52

Club for many reasons.

For Marietta Smith, it was

the most personal reason

of all — Marietta is the

very first graduate of The

Walker Scottish Rite Clinic

for Childhood Language

Disorders!

Back in 1988, she was

one of the first children

treated at the Clinic

and the first to actually

graduate. Marietta has

been very gracious to come

back often and help us

with various events. Last

year, she was one of the

speakers at our annual 52

Club Luncheon. At that time, she received a gift membership in the club.

This year, Marietta proudly presented her own check to Sheri Mistretta,

Executive Director, for her membership! We are thrilled to have this very

special “first graduate” member.

Marietta knows all too well how important the Clinic’s services are and

how important it was to her family that they were free back in 1988 — and

still are! She is happy to be paying back the favor. “I am so honored to be

able to give to the Clinic! As an educator, I understand the importance of

early intervention and the positive impact it has on the whole family.”

If you would like to join Marietta in becoming a 52 Club member,

use the envelope enclosed with this newsletter or contact Diane Ludwig,

CFRE, Development Director, at [email protected] or 314-533-7415.

Membership levels are $5 a week or $10 a week, paid monthly, quarterly

or annually. Your gift helps the children all 52 weeks of the year. As Earl

Walker, founder of the 52 Club, always notes, “A gift to help children is an

investment in the future.” How right he is. Welcome, Marietta, to the 52 Club!

The Gift of GivingWhile all services are provided free to all families at the Clinic, some

find their own unique ways to give back. The story of Carson’s family is

just one example.

Each year the Clinic does

a variety of special event and

needs catering services. Several

years ago, we connected with

Westwood Catering and a match

was made! Suzie was delightful to

work with, gave us great service

and great rates. She knew what

we did and was happy to help

the Clinic where she could. Little

did she know that after her third

child, Carson, was born three

years ago, he would need speech

and language services.

And so, Suzie went from Clinic caterer to Clinic parent. She and her

family have really gotten behind Carson and helped him with homework,

gotten him to therapy each week, and brought him to the Group Therapy

session when he began his therapy in Fall 2010.

Suzie and her family really got behind the needs of the Clinic and

Westwood Catering has been a significant in-kind donor to our events

since Carson started therapy. She and her staff have gone above and

beyond to make the dinners at our KidTalk Celebration and Golf Outing

major successes!

We are pleased to be able to help Carson and pleased his family

is helping in return. Giving is a personal matter and each person and

family must decide if the time is right and give as, and if, they can. We

are honored that Carson’s family has this great gift to give at this time.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Scottish Rite Women’s Club Honors Krehmeyers with Gold Leaf

Members of the Scottish Rite Women’s Club added a Gold Leaf to the Clinic’s

Giving Tree in June in memory of Melba and Lewis Krehmeyer. Melba had been

a long-time member of the group and the Club wanted to recognize her work

and the Krehmeyer’s long-standing support. Here, Sheri Mistretta, Executive

Director, and members of the Club find just the right spot on the Giving Tree

for the new leaf. THANK YOU Scottish Rite Women’s Club for this meaningful

remembrance of two great people.

Moolah Shrine Circus FUN for Clinic FamiliesWhen the circus came to town in March,

Moolah Shriners made free tickets available to

many Clinic families — what a FUN time they

had! In addition, the Shriners also recognized

the Clinic in their annual circus program book.

MANY THANKS to this great group for helping our

families and showcasing the Clinic.

Clinic Awarded Grant from Spirit of St. Louis Women’s Giving Circle

The Clinic was honored to be

selected as one of 19 organizations

to receive a grant from the Spirit

of St. Louis (SOS) Women’s Giving

Circle at it’s spring allocation

meeting. The group carefully

screened these agencies from

more than 290 applications, did

site visits and then had each of

it’s more than 230 members vote. The process took more than six months to

complete. Executive Director, Sheri Mistretta (far left) attended the meeting to

receive the grant check. THANK YOU, SOS!

Troy Shrine Holds Annual Screening with ClinicFor several years now, the Troy Shrine and the Walker Scottish Rite Clinic

have partnered for a one-day screening of children to help identify needs either

the Shriner’s Hospital or the Clinic could address. On April 9, approximately

five children were screened by the Clinic. It is a service we are happy to help

provide and a great partnership for the area.

AROUND THE CLINIC

Sharing the Clinic’s StoryExecutive Director, Sheri Mistretta, has

been busy this spring sharing the stories of our

children and their needs with visits to the Cape

Girardeau Shrine Club, the Kirkwood Optimist,

the annual MSHA (MO Speech-Hearing Assn.)

Conference, and the Cape Girardeau Masonic

Lodge. Sheri shared the Clinic’s program

impacts and informed audiences of our

developing plans with Maryville University.

Italian Open Golf Event Helps ClinicThe Italian Open’s 38th Annual Children’s

Charity Golf Tournament in May 2011 once again

selected the Clinic as one of the charities to be

assisted with proceeds from their event. Mona

Monteleone, Development Coordinator, was on

hand to share the Clinic’s story and help with the

day. THANK YOU, Italian Open!

Finances and BudgetsFacing another challenging year, Clinic board and

volunteers were again committed to maintaining

high quality services to the children. Budgets were

constrained, projects delayed and some services

reduced. The focus continued to be on the children

and helping them progress. Though there were

several budget items cut in 2010 to meet reduction

in revenue, the Clinic retained almost identical direct

service therapeutic visits as the previous year by

prioritizing on services to the children in individual

and group therapy. Regrettably, external community

screening visits had to be reduced as a result.

The Clinic budget comes from a variety of sources

— foundation and corporate grants, special events

(Trivia Night, Golf Outing, and KidTalk Celebration),

tribute gifts (in Honor and in Memory gifts), the 52

Club, the Giving Trees, the Guardian Angels program,

appeal mailings, investment income, and the many,

many gifts from individuals who support our work.

THANK YOU ALL!

Volunteer SupportEach year, approximately 200 volunteers step forward to lend their support and expertise in helping meet the many demands of the Clinic. Board members, ofce volunteers, college students, Scottish Rite Masons and lodges, along with many community volunteers form a strong team to meet the needs of governance, special events, ofce work, fundraising and professional services. We also proudly continue our partnership with Fontbonne University and St. Louis University (SLU) by providing their speech and language students with practicum hours as they help us with annual screenings. A sincere THANK YOU to all of our dedicated volunteers for helping us help the children through their many dedicated eorts in 2010.

KidTalk Individual Therapy in St. Louis and three Outreach sites and KidStart Headstart Individual Therapy – each child receives one-on-one 30-minute therapy sessions with a Masters-level therapist. The twice-a-week sessions are tailored to each child’s particular needs.KidScreen Program – children receive an initial 30-45 minute screening session to determine if they have any speech or language delays or issues. Screenings are done in the clinic locations as well as at local daycares and preschools.KidTalk Prep Group Therapy – groups of four children, ages 2-3, who are speaking very little or not at all, are seen in a small group format. This allows them to learn to socialize with their peers as their speech and language skills are stimulated. Children then generally go on to Individual Therapy as well. All Ears Program – Children enrolled in Individual Therapy receive a hearing test by a licensed and certied audiologist. Hearing issues often accompany speech and language disorders. 78 children were screened in 2010.Hanen Program for Parents – Parents desiring to learn assistance techniques for their children with speech and language disorders had a new option in the “Hanen - It Takes Two to Talk” program oered for the rst time by the Clinic.

Scottish Rite Members – Dues Gifts We thank the following Scottish Rite members for including gifts to the Clinic

with their 2010 dues during October, November and December 2010

“Pull for Kids” Trapshoot – New Event for ClinicClinic kids work very hard to overcome their speech and language challenge.

Some take months and some take years. Along the way, parents, families and

staff are PULLING for the kids all the way!

Now we have a new way to pull for the kids with our first-ever “Pull for

Kids” Trapshoot on Saturday morning, September 24, 2011 at the popular

Gateway Gun Club in Bridgeton. Registration is 9:00 AM followed by practice/

instruction time with a 10:00 start. Lunch and beverages will be provided with

a prize ceremony ending the competition. Event chair Frank Mistretta and his

committee are working hard to make this a great inaugural event. “We invite

everyone to come give it a try, experienced or not. It is going to be a FUN time!”

notes Frank. Cost is $75 per person with teams of 5 shooters

for $375; must be 18 or older to participate. Great prizes and

Fun-Shoot competitions! No experience needed — all skill levels

welcome! Each shooter receives 50 clay birds, 50 shells, ear and

eye protection and use of a shotgun if needed.

Sponsorships are still available, ranging from $50 - $1,000.

Contact Mona Monteleone, Development Coordinator, for

complete details ([email protected] or 314-533-7415)

Come to shoot or come to enjoy the festivities! Together we can all “pull for

the kids” who need our help!
