This annual gift certainly supports Catholic works beyond our parish, such as our seminary, poorer parishes (including our Cathedral!), homeless and prisoner apostolates, and basic evangelization effortsfrom the Chancery. But more than simply giving to a need, we all have a need to give: to support our Archbishop and his offices once a year. So join me in making a gift?as much as your means allow?to our 2020 goal of $84,000. We raised this amount last year pretty quickly, and I don? t think we? ll have difficulty this year either. I? ll be joining many of you in making a gift for 1% of the total goal ($840), but I know not many can make that level of gift, what with kids in college and rentswhat they are in San Francisco. This weekend we will hear a brief pep talk from a layperson at the end of Mass. Latin Mass: Gregorian Chant This is the fifth in my series on the Traditional Latin Mass. I have already explained why the priest prays the entire Eucharistic Prayer in silence, and today I will explain why the Church encouragesthe use of Gregorian Chant, which soundsso different from guitars and pianos. When I was a boy I came bounding down the stairs one day to hear the most deeply moving music coming from Dad?s phonograph, a sound that struck me to the core. He wasplaying the Christmas Chantsfrom a Trappist Monastery, and I immediately knew?even though I had never heard Gregorian Chant before, and the words were in a language I didn? t know?that these men were singing of God. ?Gregorian Chant,?Vatican II writes, ?is specially suited to the Roman Liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services.?Of course you will not hear Gregorian Chant at most parishes, but why is it simply the best music for the Mass? For two reasons: first, it is 100% scriptural. The words to Gregorian Chant are not written in an ex-Jesuit?s studio, or adapted from a pop song. They are all simply texts from the Bible. So really, when we sing Gregorian chant we are singing theBible. Second, chant is the best music for Mass because it is humble, simple, and entirely vocal. It is the simplest form of sung prayer, and its simple beauty draws people to sing it. Do you find yourself humming the Kyrie or the Sanctus even outside of Mass? I do, because the melodies are so simple but so profound. Gregorian Chant is not the only music for Mass, but no parish should be without it. Saying Good-Bye Catalina Rausa led our Holy Rosary Sodality for many years. She lived just a few blocks from the church and would attend Mass almost every day. Many of us loved to see her at social functions, and she spent hours before the Blessed Sacrament. But a few months ago she just went missing. The Sunday Scriptures by Fr. Joseph Illo Loving Enemies (Lev 19: 1-2, 17-18; 1 Cor 3: 16-23; Mt 5: 38-48). This Sunday, the last before Ash Wednesday, Jesus commands us to love our enemies. But if we love our enemies, we won?t have any? . precisely. It takes two to tango, and two to fight. If I love everyone who hates me, even though he continues to hate me, he is not essentially my enemy any longer. I have the power to neutralize hatred, or, really, God gives me that power, the power of love. St. Maximilian Kolbe would say to his fellow prisoners in Auschwitz, ?Don?t hate the guards. Don?t hate the guards? .?

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION24/7 (except during the hours f rom Sat. 4pm to Sunday 9pm). ?Could you not watch one hour with me?? - Matthew 26:40 On Ash Wednesday, we will be receiving ash crosses on our foreheads to remind ourselves of the fleetingness of this life and our need for repentance. To repent means to re-think. The church hopes that in re-thinking, we also re-orient the direction of our lives and renew our our way of living. Let us make Jesus the center of our lives once more this Lent! What better way than to present ourselves before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in adoration so that He can renew us! Dedicate a weekly holy hour this Lent to pray before the Lord and put yourself and your loved ones before Him. Adorers are always needed. Please sign up today!
